View Full Version : lucky me, I got to watch a friend get killed today

Some dumb fuck of a gas fitter left his 24" pipe wrench on a way beam on one my works overhead cranes today. They were working along the way beam because the gas pipe they where removing from the building followed the wall right above it.
Any ways, fast forward 2 hours and Mr dumb fuck has left the building. Somebody else I work with grabbed the crane controls and unknowingly pushes the 20lb wrench off the way beam, where it falls 40 feet on to another guys head. he never knew what hit him, I don't know for sure but I'm assuming the impact probably broke his neck
no accident, just pure stupidity and negligence, and it was not just the dumb ass pipe fitters fault. The cranes are always locked out for maintenance or other reasons, such as having people working on the way beams. A full on inspection of the crane is done before the supervisor unlocks the crane...which was not done, hell the crane was not even locked out.
The end result is that my work supervisor is probably going to be going to prison for criminal negligence, because he didn't enforce the safety policies and some one got killed. The pipe fitter will probably just get fired, and the gas company will likly get sued.
but the only thing i really give a shit about is that the guy I split 5 jugs of beer and 60 chicken wings with last Friday wont be going fishing with me next weekend, nor will he be marrying his fiancée next month, or get to see the kid shes pregnant with.
I don't just know what else to say.........

I am sorry to hear that roastelk.
Construction and cranes are scary big things. My dad drove a crane, so I have certainly heard stories about how a little negligence can do a lot of harm.

There's something especially horrifying about a death that was completely the result of carelessness on someone's part.
I betcha that pipe fitter never leaves a wrench out like that again.

ya It easily could of been me, or anyone else who got hit. the machine I was running simply happend to not be under that crane.
im really not looking forward to tomorrow, me and my girlfriend are heading over to his (her) place. the four of us had been getting together to play cards a couple times a weeks, whist/ canasta/ rummy etc.. gonna miss that.
That's so bad. I worry abut things happening to friends but luckily it hasn't happened yet.

I am sorry to hear of your loss. Perhaps the silver lining is that his death would have been quick and painless. From the sounds of it he died far too young, far too needlessly, and with far too much left to accomplish in life.
Once again, I am sorry for your loss.

I'm sorry man. I work in a shipyard so I know how easily something like that can happen. It's hard to beat into some people's heads just how dangerous poor "house-keeping" can be. If the fitter had just taking some responsibility for his work area and not left tools lying around then your friend would still be here.

I'm sorry, roastelk, what a terrible thing to see. Construction sites are so dangerous. All it takes is a moment of inattention, a chain of events, and someone is hurt or killed.

Feerrk! That is why there are laws some people hop up and down about infringing their freedom to wear a plastic helmet on all building sites. It's always the combination of overlook and not expect. What a fucking stupid avoidable way to be killed. What a fucking shock to witness it!

Damn.
I kind of relate to the tragic side of this sad event after watching my mother die when she was taken off the respirator last Sunday afternoon.
Also, I know what it's like to get hit with something accidentally knocked off something on an industrial-type site. A barrel pump was accidently kicked off a drilling platform, striking me on the hardhat and left shoulder. Had I not been wearing the hardhat, I most likely would've had my head caved in. It's almost certain that incident was the cause of my need for cervical spine surgery some 20 years later.
And, much more recently, I was struck squarely in the head by the corner of a 35 pound stereo speaker knocked off a stack of boxes of books about a year ago when helping my Uncle Bob move.

Oh, roastelk, this is very sad, I'm sorry for your loss. I'm moved to tears. It's just terrible.
Your story reminds me of a similar tale told by my husband. Mister Stopper once went canoeing with some friends when he was younger. One young man fell into the lake and was unable to swim to safety; my husband watched his friend drown. It happened many years ago and he still talks about it.
Perhaps you and your co-workers can hold a beef-and-beer benefit for the young woman and her baby-to-be to help them out.

Sorry, mate. Such a thing is going to happen to me eventually, (The losing someone bit, not the spanner on the head bit), and I'm not looking forward to it.
