Who needs expensive CGI when a pair of rolled-up socks costs like a buck and a half? Oh, wait...they probably would have been special Dept of Defense socks produced by Lockheed Martin for maximal bulge enhancement, at a cost large enough to provide free medical care to the entire population of California. You're right, CGI is the way to go.

Apparently, today is also a National Day of Prayer in the US. So, is the US just intentionally shitting on Mayday, or what? Discuss. The folks in the Tulsa Atheist Meetup are going to a park for a protest, displaying signs like "Nothing fails like prayer." Since I disagree with their effrontery and think it does nothing to further whatever atheist cause there is, I'm not going to grace them with an appearance. I have a convenient excuse anyway, they're pulling this chicanery at 5:00 PM, right when I have to pick up my daughter and grandson from school. If I went I would be at least a half hour late and miss out on the horn-honking, single-fingered salutes, and shouted insults and threats Christians seem to be so free with here.

I'd rather dance around the Maypole.

The best thing about May 1 is that it is exactly on the other side of the calendar from October 31. May 1 is the 121st day of the year. October 31 is the 304th. Now 121+(365/2)=304.5, that is to say noon on Halloween. That means that after six months of getting further away from Halloween, we are now approaching it.

:catjack::witcharc::boo::brew::haunted:

So to recap, the awfulness of not-Halloween is now half over.

It seems to me that I heard about some uprising in Eastern Europe where the rioters actually fuelled up a Soviet tank that'd been parked on some public square as a "monument" (aka reminder) of their "liberation". What surprised me is that it worked. The Soviets hadn't thought to render it inoperable...they just ran it out of fuel and let it sit.

Yeahbut...

Wouldn't you think that if they're going to set it up as a "liberation memorial", they'd somehow disable it so that local rabble-rousers don't use it?

Probably because the Soviets thought the provincials were either stupid or intimidated, or both.

It was orange-ish, but otherwise I have no idea what sort.

I have to say I am a bit pissed off about the dock closure not being announced within the ILWU rank and file- I am a member and would have gone out in support. There was a sort of back and forth with it a month or so ago, but when the arbitrator said "You may not", that seemed the end of it. I can understand not telling the bosses, but it could have been communicated to the workers.

Qingdai
05-02-2008, 07:36 PM
Well if they were told by arbitrators they couldn't stop work, how could they officially communicate with the workers except by word of mouth? Seemed that worked fairly well on the longshore side. Better communication between locals may be the key.

Caligulette
05-02-2008, 07:37 PM

They went out because at the hiring hall (I am speculating here) they probably agreed to, the hiring hall is the place where gossip gets passed on, it's safe from the prying eyes of the bosses. Heck, they don't even understand how the union organizes hiring, much less day to day bru ha ha. Word gets passed around, the same as when they "unofficially" decided to dump all the logs going to S.A.

Never underestimate the ability of men to gossip.

I'm sorry, Caligulette, that you didn't get to show your solidarity. I can't explain you're being out of the loop. A friend of mine organized your place of employment. Could it be that local longshore types are Stalinists? Or, Maoists?

Caligulette
05-02-2008, 10:01 PM
There is a contingent of ISO members, I do know that. They're more than revisionist, they're opportunists (endorsing Green Party and Dem party candidates, for example). I have been told that there is a Stalinist strain in the ILWU. I am inclined to believe it, based purely on the history of the CP in the USA.

We didn't blow up any cars, but my great labor subversion yesterday was that I did take the day out of work and we celebrated Beltane by having an egg hunt with the kids and then went for a hike and a picnic at a nearby Nicholas Farm management area (http://www.rihunts.com/wma/nicholasfarm.htm) which we hadn't been to yet :yup:

http://www.rihunts.com/images/wma/nicholas.ref.jpg

Good times, good times. Nice bright sunshiny day, not too hot or too breezy. We took the path that passed near Roaring Brook (not that loud really) and almost ends at the Moosup River, but we didn't bushwack the path the rest of the way to the river because of the large nests of red ants at the end of the trail... Spring is in full force here for the various bugs--the gnats just arrived in RI this week and of course the ticks, which were out in full force in both the standard and deer tick varieties, and made for an interesting picnic as we discovered them coming up on us commando style. But the final score was humans 9, ticks 0, so altogether it was great May Day picnic, for us anyway. Then we drove over to Carbuncle Pond and the people rolled their pants legs up and got their feet wet. Summer's just around the corner!

It's from the original Fiend Folio, 1st edition AD&D. A lot of the creatures in it were 'obligatory new monsters' from modules or else reader submissions from White Dwarf and never again saw print.
