I was thinking about maybe running an On The Waterfront themed mafia. I would have some writing prep to do so I wouldn't be starting for maybe 1-2 weeks.

Any interest?

As a longshoreman's daughter, I totally resent the charactorization of all longshoreman as mafioso.

Thanks for the invite Crumb, but game playing on the interwebs while moving house may be a bit beyond me.

Wow dude...both you and her have my utmost respect. I can only imagine the stress and anxiety you must be going through....

Well, I can in a way. I was deployed at sea when my wife was giving birth to our firstborn, (daughter), and I'll never forget the fear that overcame me when I got a call from my division officer that he needed to see me about my wife. I was literally shaking in my shoes as he read the letter from the red cross. Thankfully, she had only been hospitalized for severe post-partum depression.

You and your wife are both in my thoughts. Tell her to stay safe and come home in one piece.

That is evidence of not thinking, my dear. If you are so wlling to act without carefully considering the problem you've been presented, your fellow players may wish to think about how much value they place on your continued survival in the game.

eh, seriously: there's actually no 100% clear way to prevent others from posting. We must simply hope that they realize it's a game going and that they would not interfere.

I believe that works pretty well :)

mickthinks
05-30-2008, 11:09 AM
Good, now you are thinking, but still not very carefully. True, there may be no way to prevent non-players from posting*, but until I asked the question, there was nothing to tell me that a comment wouldn't be welcome. I had to work it out for myself. Even now, someone else would have to read a long long way back in the thread to find Crumb's request to legs. Why not make it easier by, for instance, tagging something like "players only, please" onto the game thread title?

Mick

Is it not worth thinking about, Adam? Was that your considered response to my idea? Just for a moment, consider the :ff: as a large unlimited game of mafia, and think...

Is my suggestion good for the ordinary players here? If so, what hidden interest might your summary dismissal of it and me serve?

I'd like to hear your reasoning please.

I don't like you. That's about the extent of it. I didn't think that interest was exactly hidden, though.

Seriously, dude. People play Mafia all over the tubes without special measures to communicate the rules to any random yahoo who might come along and post in th game thread. You don't even have a solution in search of a problem. You have a desire to search for a solution that you can then take out in search of a problem.

mickthinks
05-30-2008, 03:17 PM
I don't like you.

Okay, firstly, you don't even know me, which makes your emotions look out of control. That's not good for the town.

Secondly, why would it be good for the town to be purged of people you and your friends don't like? What if you and your friends don't have the town's best interests at heart?

Dude, my vote stands.

Who's trying to purge you? Of course you are right, Adam. The analogy is not perfect and there is no clear equivalent of lynching at the :ff:. Just because I can't be forced to leave doesn't mean that you don't want me to go.

I think your idea is unnecessary ... Okay, but if that matters to you, then you can make your point and listen to mine. And if it doesn't matter enough to discuss it with me, then you have no reason to respond so negatively. This (http://www.freethought-forum.com/forum/showthread.php?p=543351#post543351) was the same-old same-old, not from me but from you. Why? Because I'm not on your side and you don't want others to pay attention to any ideas I have. That kind of premprive non-logic is never good for the town and that makes you look like scum, I think.

widget,

no get rid of the person that isnt helping the town win, because regardless of how the numbers count he might as well be mafia.

sorry if you didnt get that. but i consider your play such, as it is, to be more detrimental to the game than the mafia at least hey put bad logic out there.

i dropped the hammer because your dead weight and ultimately the town will be better off without you.

Maybe, but this proves very little. How many of them would happily allow non-players to comment? How many of them are at sites where only players are members? How many of them have never considered the problem for no other reason than that it has never cropped up? It's cropped here now, and "we've never had to think about it, so Mick's talking shit" is not the most intelligent response.

Mick
You don't even have a solution in search of a problem. I can see that if it's okay for me to join in even though I'm not a player, or in other words, if Crumb's ruling is unnecessary, then there's no problem. Now it seems you are quibbling with Crumb's ruling, not my suggestion.

Why does God hate you so much?

You are so young and have your whole life ahead of you....

Why does God hate you along with all the non-white children of the world?

Personally, I enjoy the leisurely pace. FF games are renowned for their slowness. That's just one opinion, though.

No, I'm quite enjoying the slower pace as well. It slowed down over the weekend of course but that's normal, I expect it to pick up back into high activity mode.

Smilin

I though pm-watching was not allowed or at least frowned-upon?

I wasn't aware that it would be viewed as cheating. It's never been specified in any of the rules on the games that I've played. Not specifically addressed it the opening rules of the game such as NO PM'S except during night time moves. I was bored yesterday and kept clicking on the who's online function and just happened to catch that piece of information.

Crumbs call in my opinion. If he deems it was indeed cheating, I'll bow out of the game, gracefully.

I am a man of my word and value my integrity....(or what remains of it)

I simply viewed is as a creative and resourceful way to catch scum in the act.

When I caught Adam and Wei doing it the first time...they turned it around on me and I wound up lynched as a result....

But, in the end, they turned out to be the scum.

Crumb? What's your ruling on this?

JamesBannon
06-10-2008, 03:23 PM
It's just different ways of playing the game. It's up to Crumb, his call as the DM.

So, you guys intentionally stopped blocking james knowing he'd view me next? Clever.

ES, I had you pegged, but Skydin was in the middle of my suspect list and Tick was way at the bottom.

I actually had capp in my mind as the real cop for most of the game...I guess I wasn't too terribly off there. The day I died, I had my hopes riding on the Tick outing as cop, though, which is why I was so pissed about the hammer being dropped on me, and knew Skydin had to be either scum or retarded at that point.

Oddly enough, the first draft of my sheet for the upcoming BSG game has Helo working like capp's role appears to have worked in this game, but I took it out b/c I didn't think a mechanic that basically outed all the scum at once would be fun.

See, that's why I thought she went scum-turned-traitor. Traitor usually knows all the scums anyway. If that had been the mechanic, capp would have bought the town an extra day, numbers-wise, but there wouldn't have been an innocent townie with an accurate hit-list of scum. Interesting mechanic, I must say. It certainly threw me for a loop.

Crumb
06-11-2008, 12:14 AM
Sorry if it sucked. :sorry: I had to try it though.

Skydin
06-11-2008, 12:17 AM
Ah, see... how could that possibly work, exactly?

It makes the town have a SERIOUS advantage, because if that guy gets it right just once, the games over.

Adam
06-11-2008, 12:17 AM
It's a cool mechanic, in theory (which is why I was toying with it for BSG)...I just don't think it works very well in practice. As soon as capp got lucky with a view, or whatever his night move was called, the game was over.

What's everyone's opinion on the framer/roleblocker combo? It worked out pretty damn well for the mob, until capp trumped everything.

Crumb
06-11-2008, 12:22 AM
I gave the mob the framer & role-blocker to over power them because of Capp's role.

Ensign Steve
06-11-2008, 12:22 AM
I think it could be argued that having a framer and a roleblocker in the same game puts a lot of power in the hands of the mafia, however ...

... we fucked up the first night and my block ruined Tick's frame
... it was awfully suspicious that James could suddenly get a read on the third night, so we had to kind of bullshit our way around that (and obviously failed)
... we lost the game

So, I guess it's not too much power after all.

I did enjoy having the blocking power, and our successful frameup bought us an extra day.

Ensign Steve
06-11-2008, 12:23 AM

I realized that my role was quite powerful provided I got the right person but at the same time I was really confused because of the roleblocker and framer roles throwing the town into chaos. It was only when Skydin walked into the trap that I could aim the arrow accurately and right into the heart of the scums during my last day. I had to move fast because I had a strong feeling I was the next mafia victim.

I thought that Skydin would have known that she was at risk of being turned traitor but apparently she didn't even know there was somebody out there searching for her?

Crumb's condition I received in my original PM was that in order to win I had to find Terry and out rest of the mafia. Does that mean if I hadn't found Terry and somehow rest of the townies found out the real scum, we still won't have won?

Oh Crumb's reply PM after I sent in the right name was quite interesting.

Finally! I got him! Skydin's Terry Malloy! That's who I pick tonight. :D

Skydin is Terry malloy.

On your way out of the church basement this evening you notice someone following you. It is Edie Doyle sister of Joey Doyle. She tries to convince you that you should inform on the mafia.

Edie: What are you going to do?
Terry: I ain't gonna eat cheese for no cops, and that's for sure.
Edie (intuitively): It was Johnny Friendly who had Joey killed, wasn't it? (Terry doesn't respond) Or he had him killed, or he had something to do with it, didn't he? He and your big brother Charley? (Still no response from Terry) You can't tell me, can you? Because you're part of it. Cause you're just as bad as the worst of them. Tell me the truth, Terry!
Terry: You'd better go back to that school out in daisyland. You're drivin' yourself nuts. You're drivin' me nuts. Quit worryin' about the truth all the time. Worry about yourself.
Edie: I should've known you wouldn't tell me. Pop said Johnny Friendly used to own you. Well, I think he still owns you. No wonder everybody calls you a bum.
Terry (obviously hurt): Don't say that to me. Edie. Don't say that to me now.
Edie: No wonder. No wonder.
Terry: I'm only tryin' to help ya out. I'm tryin' to keep ya from gettin' hurt. What more do ya want me to do?
Edie: Much more!
Terry: Wait a minute.
Edie: Much, much, much more!
Edie runs off.

After the visit from Edie you are no longer loyal to your brother and his mafia buddy. You are actually an Informant. You win with the longshoremen when the mafia are all eliminated.

"It wasn't him, Charley! It was you. You remember that night in the Garden, you came down to my dressing room and said: 'Kid, this ain't your night. We're going for the price on Wilson.' You remember that? 'This ain't your night!' My night! I coulda taken Wilson apart! So what happens? He gets the title shot outdoors in the ball park - and whadda I get? A one-way ticket to Palookaville."

Congratualtions! You have met half of your win condition, but the town still has to win.
