I was all excited this week because I ordered a new video card for my aging PC. I ordered it from NewEgg Wednesday night and it got here today! Well, I had just assumed my 1998-era IBM Aptiva had an AGP slot. It doesn't. I don't know what the huge slot below the PCI slots is but it isn't AGP (nor would a card plugged into it line up with the opening in the back).

So I could return it; exchange it for a PCI video card; or hang onto it to plug into the new motherboard I was thinking of buying anyway. I'll probably do the latter, although I'm now doubting my PC-savvy enough to second-guess whether upgrading by replacing motherboard and processor is within my caveman capabilities.

This is what I get for not smoking pot for five days, my brain stops working.

My guess is the slot you mistook for an agp slot is for ISA cards.

It is highly probable that a new motherboard will not fit into your current case. So you would need a new case and possibly a new power supply as well. You'd also need new memory, and of course a new CPU. If you go that route, you'd be able to salvage your drives (hard, cd-rom and floppy), keyboard, mouse and monitor. But you'd need to replace everything else.

Yeah, I was afraid I might need a new case (under $50 so no biggie) and was planning on a new power supply. You think I would need new RAM? Both sticks that are in there now were purchased within the last year.

I'm afraid I have nothing constructive to add for Dave, but welcome to FF, John Carter. :welcome2:

it's called state dependent learning and it is a beautiful thing.

I would exchange the card for a pci one, instant gratification and all that.

I am sory that you have been dry my friend.

Both sticks that are in there now were purchased within the last year. That really depends on what the RAM is and what the new board needs. And if I may, I would reccomend not getting the cheapest case/PS possible. Cheap power supplies slowly and inexplicably kill hard drives, and cheap cases lack airflow and bend inconveniently.
