World Champion Italy crashed and burned in their opener against the Netherlands in the Euro 2008 soccer championships. They lost 3-0; their defense looked slow (World Cup hero Fabio Cannavaro is injured) and vulnerable.

They could still recover. However, they are in the "Group of Death", with France and Romania as well as Holland. France and Romania drew 0-0 in the other game.

Tournament favorites Germany won their first game (2-0 over Poland), as did highly touted Portugal (2-0 over Turkey). The other favorites are Spain, Italy and France (and now, perhaps, Holland).

I was in Amsterdam in 1996 when England beat Holland, 4-1, to win Group A. There were a lot of people drinking copiously from green bottles. Those were the days, when both England and Scotland were in it.
