I'm going with the poll suggestion, with the time limit suggested by godfry. If you already voted for category champion, I think a few have, please re-cast your vote now.

HAHA, yes. My smiley is champion.
Close the poll now, for its fate has been sealed.

Okay... Like on that, now...
I wanted three votes. I'd've voted for the last two, the "wavegoodbye" and the "I got a letter from my sweetheart".
Then, you could have compiled a favored/not-favored continuum.
Eventually, after all polling, you should be able to determine most favored from least and all those falling betwixt and between.
Funzies.

Fine, fine, I voted, damnit! It had to be the mailbox guy. The three weird teeth, the humping of the mailbox, the exiting in the distance. It's all good.
C'mon people, :goodbye: is the champ by any measure (unless you have one of those butterfly fetishes): definite usefulness, clear meaning, cuteness plus attitude, vanishing into the distance, and is an actual smilie. That mail one is fine in its own way (yes, I voted for it before), but the teeth must count against it, and it's clearly less widely applicable. It's not as valuable. It'll be an excellent runner up, but it's just not champion quality.
Vote! Remember November! Don't stay at home!

I posted in the other thread why I think that usefulness is not a valid criteria to use when assessing smilies. Invoking usefulness leads inevitably to discrimination against certain classes of smiley, that by their very nature are less useful than others.
So the mail guy gets my vote. Good luck little fella!
Oh! and if you like smilies disappearing into the distance, then the mail guy not only does that, but also appears from the distance; something that none of the other contenders in this election do.

You're just bandwagonning now so you can continue to pimp your alleged predictive powers. Possibly for pecuniary gain. Don't even try to deny it, ceptimus. If that's your real name. :cough: Sylvia Browne :cough:

But he humps the mailbox. None of the other smilies in this poll hump anything.

Noooooo! Don't you see you are all being hoodwinked? He only pretends to hump the mailbox. He's just trying to sucker you into his world of buck teeth and sham affections. Once declared president of the smilie collection, he'll reveal the mailbox to be a weapon of mind control and will outlook humping and postal fetishes of any kind. I can't believe you guys are so blind to the danger.

/me follows the link cep usefully included in his response :glare:
You mean here?
I wondered about the utility of a smiley - should I take that into account? After all, the classic 'hello' smiley will be more useful to me than a handshake or a mail smiley. After due consideration, I decided that this would be discrimination against minorities: some of the smilies like joust, are clearly going to be used much less often than something vital to the normal running of the board, such as the dancing vegetable family. Therefore I must judge each smiley on its own merits, and usefulness mustn't enter into it.
Right. All bleeding-heart p-c worrying about the minorities. I agree with judging each smilie on it merits, but I don't see your case for utility not being a merit.
Good call on the dancing vegetables though. I think there'll be some competition there.

this is a great way to learn about all the smilies
I voted for the hello butterfly cuz its the prettiest, and since there wasnt any demented evil smilie to pick cuteness was the only criteria.
plus the one true king of smiles so war was taken out in some sort of coup detat.

Yes Joe, that's the one.
And from another thread :giggle: I must remind people that there is a hidden under-class of smiley on this board - the HTML character entity smilies - that also should be allowed to take part in this competition.
I give you:

:goodbye: There's no way this smilie should win. Notice that black glove on the hand it waves. It makes me wonder what that creepy thing has been up to.

Well, I voted utilitarian on this and it looks like it's going down in a landslide to one of my secondary favorites.
Given that :wavebye: waves, smiles, turns and goes away and then BLINK... he reappears, as if from some sci-fi transport beam.
As pointed out, the mailbox guy does come up to the box from a distance and recede from view into the distance...nice touch. Classy.
As for the teeth, as one of those who turned down orthodontia, I can sympathize with the mailbox guy. :beaugest: How many out there had to wear braces?
Then...as for this "humping" :glare: ...let's just say that's a liberal interpretation. You must be a dog owner. Y'see, I thought he was kissing his mailbox in gratitude for containing a letter from his sweetheart afar.....
I guess I'm the ol' romantic in the crowd, huh?

The category is "greetings." In my book, :welcome: is the champion greeting smilie. It's definitely greeting someone, it's happy, warm, friendly and cheerful. No weirdness. No ambiguity. No superfluous stuff. Simple and direct. I like it.
Yeah, the mailbox guy is cute and has extra features and (as godfry says) is romantic, but it's not much of a "greetings" smilie, unless you have a strange definition of "greetings."

Y'know. You're right.
Also, the guy waving and then walking away, is waving goodbye, not greeting.
Maybe we should have this whole thing set aside and come back to some as yet unchallenged smilies within some of the categories, then we can smile-off if necessary.
I still think multiple votes for each voter in each heat would be cool. Is it possible? Like, Vote for three(3) of these ten?
Cut it down like in the footraces in track n' field. Run 10, keep 3, run 10 keep 3, run 10 keep 3, run 9, award 1st, 2nd & 3rd. One in ten gets an award. Increase the number of heats or the size of the heats and reduce the time to get through the whole thing.
Thing is, from what I've seen already, I'd love to see this go ahead even if I only get one vote per group of smilies....:deepsigh:
Watching the brazen electioneering and all has been....uplifting?...well, no. But distinctly amusing, that's for sure.

Yup. It's just an option you can pick when you're setting up the poll.

Oh man, I'm glad the hat-tipper got at least one vote. He's my second choice, and I was so sad after I voted to see that he hadn't gotten any justice.
It's true, the mailboxer isn't much of a greeter ... but she's in the category, that's all. It's not for the best greeting smilie, it's for the best smilie in the greeting category; not everything quite fits, thassall.
