View Full Version : Photobook Idea

I thought of a thing I could do some years in the future after I get my Graphic Arts degree for being a photographer. I can have a art photobook of full page photos of all 850+ species of geckos. It would take at least several years of hard work to put together because of 850+ species. If I did one a day(which couldn't happen for all of them, some must be quite rare) it would take over two years of just taking pictures at this pace. In reality perhaps it could take eight or more years with all the flying, hiking and waiting/looking in jungles and deserts that I'd have to do. It is something I'd like to do though. What do you think and would you buy a 2,000 page book of super high quality photos of a lizard family? I think the book might have to sell for 150+ dollars because of the cost of ink and high quality printing.
Perhaps the best thing would be a disk with all the digital photos instead. Cheaper.

$150 is pretty steep, I must say, but I love the idea and definitely think there would be a market for it, particularly if you parlayed the pictures into cheaper outlets like gecko calendars and posters. You could put them all on mirrors and call it "Gecko Porn". :D

You don't happen to know what this species is called do you? I've never seen them before.

I might just have to buckle down and get one of those Giant NC geckos. They're a huge SOB aren't they?! :damn:

That African fat-tailed gecko you photographed looks exactly like our male gecko. His name is Caesar and his dorsal stripe is stunning.

Crumb, definitely consider African fat-tailed geckos. They are calm and beautiful. They also adore being petted. Easy to care for and they are quite hardy as their natural environment is the desert.

No, no wait. I didn't take those photos. I just Google Image Searched them.
I did take that crummy photo of my golden gecko on that dusty mirror though. Should have cleaned it before hand.

Another good species of gecko is the Crested Gecko. I'd recommend a golden gecko if you don't mind something that can and does not move from a spot for half a day. And those flying geckos are uber cool. Just don't let any of the wall climbing capable geckos get away from you. They are a bitch to catch again. But it's really cool to have them climb on you.

It's the kind we get here. (They are normally about twice this size.) I haven't found out what species. All you herpetologists, you have a picture, a habitat: suburban gardens, and a distribution including Johannesburg. What is it?

That's just too adorable, Joe. I'd be afraid to pick him up he's so tiny.

I'm gonna guess it's an Ittybitty Rufous-tailed Gecko.

Set your heart at rest, liv: I didn't pick him up, I held my hands around him until he ran onto me. No geckos were picked, pinched or squished during the making of this photograph.

We don't have geckos in the UK :( The nearest thing we have is sand lizards but you hardly ever see one; I don't think I've ever seen one in the UK, except in a zoo. I have seen in the wild a UK creature that is technically a lizard, though it has no legs and looks like a snake; it's called a slow worm.

I suppose those geckos hatch out from eggs? Do their parents take any interest in them, or do the baby geckos just have to fend for themselves?
