View Full Version : Why are you here?

I'm just curious about some of the responses.

Why are you here at FF as opposed to any other place?
Why are you on internet forums as opposed to any other place?

Heh, sorry, I just kinda recently been getting really lonely, it's never been a big difficulty for me before because normally I prefer the quiet and the space but the problem is, I have nothing special to think or talk about, my existence is quite aimless at present other than to see that my kids survive another day which is always a worthy goal. :D

I want to get the ball rolling to go to University but I don't exactly know what to do, what to be and how to go about it so I'm here, aimless.

That's cool though, FYI, this is a cool place to hang out but that's primarily why I'm here, because I'm aimless though it hasn't always been the case and might not always be the case. Sometimes I'm on forums to learn, other times just to pass the time and keep myself amused and other times just to be a wanderer.

So, how about you?

I am often lonely and looking for a place where I fit in. I rarely feel like I fit anywhere. So far it has been pretty good here. Some of you guys have made me feel welcome. :) thanks.

I'm just curious about some of the responses.

Why are you here at FF as opposed to any other place?

I linger here mostly because of the openness of the format and because many of the people here possess traits I admire. We may not always see eye to eye on (mostly controversial) issues, however, we are equally willing to express ourselves rationally and come to peaceful accord.

Several of the members I've also known for years from other board formats and...well, they have helped me in various ways come to grips with many of my own personal issues of despair.

These friendships have been tried and tested...and have remained sincere and resolved and respectful.

On occasion I may even find an opportunity to give something back, some insight or experience or simple good humor.

Why are you on internet forums as opposed to any other place?

"Sometimes I'm on forums to learn, other times just to pass the time and keep myself amused and other times just to be a wanderer."

That sounds reasonably accurate for me as well, Sweetie.

I also like to know that there are real people "somewhere out there" who care about life and about the well-being of others.

There was a time when I really began to doubt that.

Oh, and by the way, it is absolutely normal to be aimless (in my view)...I was quite proficient at it.

At them moment, it's purely curiousity that draws me back here. I have a number of other forums I frequent and in the quiet times when I haven't got anything to contribute or gain from those forums, I pop in here to see how things are progressing.

If I could find a passion for idle chatter then I could probably contribute more, but I lack that particular passion. I read, more so than chat.

1) I'm killing time at work.

2) I don't get nearly enough intelligent conversation in real life; this forum (among others, but especially this one) fills some of that gap.

Many of the reasons mentioned above, including Godless Dave's #1 answer.

I started off in online forums at II, which had a private section which I was invited to join. This eventually was shut down and the FF (which is now called HH) was born. When the original admins decided to leave and set up shop elsewhere, taking the FF name with them, I migrated here. I'm still at II and HH because they fill different needs for me. This place is quite different from either of the other forums I'm on. Oh, I also really dig the Arcade here!

lets see, liv mentioned starting the new forum to me one day at ii, then they left and decided to make something nonprivate, something badass and truly freethought.

I love the rough and tumble and being able to say whatever the fuck I want. I love the sense of community here and lots of the crazy ass posters. think crazy kiwis and atlanteans and there is a dude who once spent quite a while at ii explaining to me in short words that I could understand how I was a selfish ass.

thanks, ronin.

I love intelligent conversation and if my thoughts didnt grow and develop because of such conversation than I would be an asshole.

but I aint, im just your garden variety slathering beast, and I love being here.

since there are no deletions of posts or edits, with the occassional exception of user requested edits, true conversation develops here. warts and fucking all.

This feels like home. Granted it's a slightly dysfunctional family, but in many ways much healthier than my dysfunctional family of origin. I'm a True Believer in free expression. I've made its defense my life's work, in a small way. There are so few places where atheists may speak freely, and fewer still where atheists and theists may have a sense of community together. I need to speak freely and to hear others' freely spoken thoughts.

Nah... I'm not much calmer than before. It's just that I have issues with arbitrary and capricious authority. You probably saw me when I was dealing with one of those issues....When I have issues, everybody knows I have issues. Those issues have not really arisen in this environment, nor do I expect them to, given the underlying philosphy, as I understand it.

Why are you here at FF as opposed to any other place?
Why are you on internet forums as opposed to any other place?

I'm at FF because vm invited me over--and I stay because most of the people here are funn! Plus, FF fits exactly what I'm looking for in a forum--the reason I'm on internet forums at all is because I positively love human interaction. Of course, even though I know a lot of people off-screen, they tend to be in the same time zone and have things like work/study/laundry/etc. to do that means they can't carry on constant conversations with me. Constant conversation--that's what I would like. Internet forums are always available--and FF is the best one for me--this is a place to talk about lots of random things with fantastic and interesting people.

I also get very lonely when, say its finals for everyone but me and RA is working on his research or it's 11:30 at night and no one is home and it's too late to go somewhere with most people. Instead of going stark raving mad, I can come here and "interact" with other people. I sound like a total attention hog, but I just like being around people.

I come here because sufficiently many of the conversations are interesting and intelligent and I often learn something (no matter how tiny) from them.

I post here because I prefer a relaxed atmosphere that doesn't require me to follow lots of rules.

Sometimes I feel I can actually add something worthwhile to a conversation. Not often, but often enough to keep me coming back.

Perhaps it's megalomania on my part but sometimes posting here makes me feel I'm being helpful somehow.

But mostly I participate here because liv promised me a new DeLorean.

I'm here for the opportunity to interact with a group of people from all over the world with vastly different life experiences, knowledge, interests and personalities. I learn a lot here and I suspect others do too, so I feel that by helping to build this place -- and thus make these exchanges possible -- I have contributed a little something to humankind.

Needless to say I consider this my "home" forum, and I post here far more than the other two places where I post somewhat regularly: SkepticalCommunity and IIDB. My reasons for this are pretty well explained in this thread (http://www.freethought-forum.com/forum/showthread.php?t=51).

Basically livius and I made a serious effort to build a forum that incorporates what we consider the best of the various forums we've been a part of while shedding as many of the defects as possible. Whether it's scalable is yet to be seen, but so far I'm very happy with it and I'm really glad others of you are too. You all really make it what it is. :yup:

That's cool though, FYI, this is a cool place to hang out but that's primarily why I'm here, because I'm aimless though it hasn't always been the case and might not always be the case. Sometimes I'm on forums to learn, other times just to pass the time and keep myself amused and other times just to be a wanderer.

So, how about you?

It seems the natural place for an epicurean to be.

I'm just curious about some of the responses.

Why are you here at FF as opposed to any other place?

I'm here because I'd met some of the posters here on IIDB and liked the idea of interacting with them on a different forum whose raison d'etre wasn't support of non-theism.

Why are you on internet forums as opposed to any other place?

They're a way of talking to a bigger pool of people than those who live near me, who I see IRL.

Heh, sorry, I just kinda recently been getting really lonely

I got more into posting on internet forums at a rather lonely time in my life.

In general I'm realizing that RL relationships are more fulfilling to me and so I'm leaning more towards working on those lately than posting on discussion boards. No offense to anyone here; please understand that I'd be happy to have RL relationships with some of the people I meet online if only they lived close to me and our schedules meshed - it's not that I 'like' people online any less. But the reality of it is that most of them live at least a state away, if not a whole country away from me.

So I seem to be turning into more of a lurker than a poster, these days.

I'm here because I was invited by Lauri to what was then Godless Heathens and subsequently followed Liv and Viscousmemories here. A lot of people I really like were here and more were arriving daily so I stuck around.
also, I stick around cuz certain people make me cool penile and bunny avatars.

Any time you want another disguise, just say the word, dude.
Bey doesn't need any disguises. But in case we ever needed to protect ourselves ... http://images5.theimagehosting.com/beyelzusafe.gif http://images5.theimagehosting.com/beyelzusafer.gif
damn, that is great expect it to be my valentines day avatar.

Why are you on internet forums as opposed to any other place? Roland98 sent me a link to this forum in a PM over at IIDB. That prompted me to check this forum out. I liked what I saw and decided to join. You also have an awesome arcade that I really enjoy playing it. I won three trophies too. I keep trying to get the highest score in Bloody Pingu, but I have been unsuccessful thus far.

MonCapitan. That game - indeed, all the Pingu games - have a long and bloody history and I'm still sore about Lunachick stealing both my Pingu titles. I tell you solemnly the bloody Bloody Pingu score is close to the maximum possible. But there's still a chance of beating Flamingo Drive.

But it's soooo lame. Like a middle aged dude getting a sportscar to match his combover. Besides, you know I can't install sheeit. You're going to have to beg the man of the house.

Why yes, I guess I still do...

Ahhh, if that's the joke, then that explains why I didn't get it. It's based on erroneous information. The DeLorean needs only 12 inches of clearance to fully open a door. Can you get in your car with only 12 inches between your car and the next car?

Only 12". Hmm?
