Just in case anyone didn't follow the reading group threads, the chosen book of the month for February is I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings, by Maya Angelou. So we have a month to read the book, then we'll discuss it in March.

Maddog has volunteered to start the Caged Bird discussion thread in March.

In the meantime, vote here (http://www.freethought-forum.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1590) for the new book to read in March.

I got a library card yesterday and picked up Caged Bird. The paperback is about 290 pages long and very easy to read. If you pick it up today you just have to read about 10 pages a day to finish it in February. Even a slow reader with no attention span (like myself) can handle this.

And 30 pages into it (I'm ahead!) it's very good. :)

Oops. So I guess I should probably get a copy then. :blush2:

I just finished listening on Democracy Now! to tributes to Ossie Davis delivered at his funeral at Riverside Church in Harlem last Saturday. The first tribute is by Maya Angelou, followed by a eulogy by Harry Belafonte. :sadbye: Thought those who are reading I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings might be especially interested. There is also a rush transcript of the remarks made at the service:

Sigh, I'm getting impatient on waiting. Ah am afeared I will forget the book by then.

Maybe we should have a discussion thread going while we are reading the books? I understand the possibility for spoilers, but those who are worried about them can avoid the thread, or we can use spoiler tags obsessively. Whatcha think?

Talk already! My copy's going to have to make the return trip to the library before March gets here!

Well according to the "rules" it's on maddog to start the discussion thread, so perhaps someone should be harassing her to do so if y'all aren't satisfied to wait.

I'm only halfway through the book m'self, and will personally avoid any discussion of it until I'm done. Hopefully there will still be people who want to talk about it then. Hmph.
