Ok I am being annoyed by the fact that I can't tell from the list of forums if there is any new posts in the sub forum.

Is there anyway an icon can be added that indicates new posts in a subforum?

Is there a good reason for not making the reading group into a full-fledged forum?

Hmmm... You ask a good question. The only reason I made it a subforum is that it's a topical subset of A&L and I'm kind of anal like that.

Meanwhile, the little vB icon in front of "The Reading Group" turns orange (http://www.freethought-forum.com/forum/images/freethought/statusicon/subforum_new.gif) when there's a new post in the subforum. The main forum icon only darkens (http://www.freethought-forum.com/forum/images/freethought/statusicon/forum_new.gif) when there's a new post in A&L, not when there's a new post in the subforum.

Does that help at all?

Honestly I'm not crazy about subforums in general. I just think they're handled poorly in many ways, not least of which what Crumb points out about it not being as obvious when there are new posts in it as it is for regular forums. Besides, I kinda think the Reading Group is more akin to the Lifestyle forum (hobbies, etc.) than the A & L forum. I will defer to livius if she strongly disagrees, but I would be amenable to having it be a whole forum in the Baths group. :yup:

Oh...well... :hide: now I feel foolish.

I find the placement of it rather confusing as well. Perhaps it is time for it to leave the nest and find a place of its own?

Man, I can't believe y'all think it's out of place under A&L. Do you agree with vm that it's more of a Baths forum, Ymir's blood?

I understand completely why you put it under A&L. It would also fit in the Baths too, just make sure we keep the books dry. ;)

See I think of "Arts & Literature" as a sort of rarified PBS exploration of aesthetics type of forum -- which makes it a good fit in the Marketplace with science and philosophy -- whereas the Reading Group (ideally, and in my opinion) is a more casual, accessible kind of Oprah bookclub hobbiest thing more suited to the Baths.

have you read some of the highbrow arts and literature threads we have?

startrek voyager, invader zim, batman,

shit, I am not knocking pop culture but it is a subset of the a&l that you refer to

What are you trying to say? My shit isn't highbrow enough for you? asshole. :P

Oh yeah, I hit reply for a reason. I'm with Crumb. Don't hide under the chair, I didn't get it either, and still didn't get it after I asked the first time. It's starting to make sense now, but it's way more work and thought than I like to put into things.

Okay I was finally able to convince livius to let me make The Reading Group a forum of its own, so the deed has been done. You can find it under Sexuality now. :yup:

:woohoo:

But shouldn't it be above Sexuality? (R before S) The word the is ignored when alphabetizing.

Nah, none of the other forums are alphabetized. Besides, liv would only go along with the plan if it went to the bottom of the pile.

Of course! We need to alphabetize the entire forum! Vm, from now on, you'll have to post after livius on a thread, and I'll have to post after you.

So I guess that means I won't be doing much posting anymore. I'll just have to start a bunch of new threads...

ETA: Or I could change my name to zCrumb
