Livius innocently inquired as to why i haven't been around much. so now i confess. two items. one, i am a bit down, miss my lover in England. not much to say lately, preoccupied. two, i have been at a boring :yawn: little forum for a while, and took a group of really neat people there with me. the admin. has seen fit to make me a moderator in about 87% of their forums. so i am trapped like a rat :mouse: i kind of like it, absolute power corrupts after all, mods are not a known quantity here at FF, but are big flaming deals elsewhere. so i have donned my jackboots :gestapo: and waded in. thing is, it's "nice" over there, innocuous.... i like the REAL people here.also... this is deep shit, i always knew i was intelligent and i have a "smart" rep among my fellows, but this place contains people way over my head, and i have never encountered that. it worries me. in my entire life i have known 4 people smarter than me, and now there's a plethora. it makes me squirm. i will not leave here, i like a lot of people and the brilliance exhibited. and what the fuck, some topic may enter my addled mind and another death penalty thread ensue.

As for the smart thing, I prefer to think of it as people having a vast range of talents, some of which I share and others that are entirely alien to me. Why flatten that range, call it smartness and then compare yourself unfavorably to it? It's much more fun to just pool the skills and splash around in them, imo.

So what kinds of things to do have to moderate for at this secret place? Your basic flaming, or are we talking mucho rules, insane trolls, out of control spammers?

I tried to be a moderator at IIDB once, but the administration didn't think I'd play well with others :innocent:. And I have a bad habit of tying my own hands at forums I administrate, so I've never had a chance to taste that corrupting power.

I know what you mean about feeling intellectually inadequate, though. For most of my life I was revered as some kind of prodigy because I was "self-taught" (meaning I read a few books and hung out with a lot of college students after having quit Jr. High and spent a couple years in the Army).

Now I don't know from smarts, but I am without a doubt one of the least educated people here and it's alternately intimidating and embarrassing. Fortunately I have no pride at all, so I'm not afraid to ask people what the hell they're talking about despite my gut feeling that whatever it is, everyone else learned it in High School.

Besides, what I lack in education I make up for with insanity. :yup:

a good friend of mine from the forum in question, someone i like a lot, has taken great offense at my comments here. i tried to explain that my twisted sense of humor should not be taken literally. she feels i insulted the people at that forum. although i did not cite the name of the forum. she feels i insulted her personally, which i would never do. the fact is the two forums are very different in tone and subjects and people, the people there are very decent salt-of-the-earth, nice, and intelligent, and i do like them. but in the interest of anyone else from there reading this thread, i hope you will see that it was my usual sarcasm, self-deprecating humor, and i certainly don't feel superior to anyone... except criminals. this is my way of apologizing for any hurt feelings, and hoping it doesn't mean the end of a friendship. :ladycop:
