View Full Version : Gigantic Fucking TV

Seriously. It's a 42" HD television. It was a combination birthday / housewarming gift from my mom. I try not to overly consume, but when it comes to gadgets, sometimes I can't help myself. If it makes me feel any better (and it does) my previous TV was 20 inches, and I had it for nearly a decade. Also it was very heavy and deep and I hated that about it.

I have the HD from the cable company, but it turns out I don't have the right HDMI cables for it. I guess I need to go buy them? Also, I'm going to hire a man to mount it on my wall for me, because he's a friend of mine and he does it for a living, and I'd rather leave this shit up to the professionals, but not so much that I'd be willing to pay Best Buy to do it.

Yes, I live in a 400 sqft. studio apartment. What the fuck is your point?

Awesome. But is there anyplace in your apartment from where you can see the whole screen?

BTW, just a warning: HDMI is full of crazy, and will act up sometimes due to copy protection crap. If you have things like a PS3 or whatever, be sure to also hook up component cables as a fallback. :)

The cable guy did leave me with approximately 1.9 MILES of component cable, so yeah I guess I'll hold on to that for emergency. I intend to purchase either a blu-ray player or a PS3 in the forseeable feature, if for no other reason than to upscale my current DVDs. Because I have to tell you, I took Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone for a test drive over the S-video, and it looked like ASS!

I bet what the cable guy left was coax cable...
component cables look like this
http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/41ZMJT82DJL._SL500_AA280_.jpg and there are 3-5 of them on a bundle (the ps3 ones have 5)

HDMI cables are OMG expencive to buy in store but can be had for super cheap on the net

HDMI Cable, Home Theater Accessories, HDMI Products, Cables, Adapters, Video/Audio Switch, Networking, USB, Firewire, Printer Toner, and more! (www.monoprice.com) seems to be good.

Oh and I have to add we just picked up the PS3 (80 gig cause it's backwards compatable with most of my PS2 games) and I can not tell you how much I LOVE LOVE LOVE the blueray player. I'm Loving the PS3 games too.

Composite: Single yellow RCA plug.
S-video: 4-pin DIN.
Component: Three RCA plugs, r/g/b coded (but not actually sending R/G/B signals, mind).

BTW, if you're getting something to watch blu-ray movies, get a PS3; the blu-ray people released a totally unfinished product to try to kill HD-DVD, and I don't think they've yet released ANY other players which are planned for compatibility with the blu-ray 2.0 version, which adds substantial functionality. Best time might be sometime during or possibly after the holiday rush, because there's supposed to be newer, lower-power, PS3 models coming out soon.

Last time I was in an electronics store, I noticed that a 'Playstation 3' with a 40-gig hard drive cost the same as the cheapest Blu-Ray players that were available.

Since a PS3 will apparently do everything a Blu-Ray player does plus allow you to play games, I'm not certain why anyone would buy a dedicated Blu-Ray player.

Cheers,

Michael

I'll chime in on the side of PS3. I have a Sony BDP-S300, and sometimes it will play a Blu-Ray disc, and sometimes it won't. Curse of the Black Pearl just stops at 01:02:57, for example. While I'm loathe to get another Sony product at this point, the PS3 does at least have the advantage of more accessible firmware updates, and while everyone's saying that you don't have to have 2.0, $1 says the older players won't read the discs that are produced post-release.

If you want a player, my best friend has a Panasonic, which gets more regular firmware upgrades, and has (knock on wood) had no problems with any disc.

You'd lose that bet. It's five-cable component cable (two audio and three video, I think). I have no idea why he left it.

I only have PS1 games (don't laugh! I still play them!). Do you think there is a machine in the world that will play those as well as blu-ray disks?

Also, I hate Sony, and I was really rooting for HD-DVD, but what can you do. They've cornered the market.

In my case, I intend to wait for downloadable HD content. I have no intention of helping Sony further cement the HD market.

We have a 32" Sony Bravia and I lurve it :pclove:

I haven't seen anything in HD on it yet, but it's still a beautiful picture. Sou and I mounted it ourselves... which is why there are extra holes in the wall and we need a bolt shoved in the mounting unit to have the TV sit level

There are no free HD channels here yet and I don't have a PS3, so it will likely be a while until I see something in HD on it.

Awesome ES. We just got a 42 inch for Christmas and I am in love. Of course all I really do with it is have marathon sessions of episodes of the Office so I'm probably not really using it at its full potential.

vm, I don't think that thing would fit in my place. I'd probably have to get rid of the stove to make it work. It's not like I really use the thing, anyway.

biochemgirl, isn't The Office broadcast in HD? So there's your full potential right there! Unless you're watching it on TBS or DVD or something.

Oh! I found out today that the signal over the component cables is an analog HD signal, so I'll hook those up tonight and see how they look. I might not bother with HDMI right way, if it looks awesome enough.

It's on DVD but we have the HD dvd player and HDMI cables and all that jazz. I just was thinking if I have this awesome t.v. I should be watching something with special effects or explosions or something. The picture is awesome..it's just Jim and Pam though :giggle:

They can all play PS1 games with "good" compatibility -- not sure it's perfect.

For PS2 games, there's three types:

Original US/JP 20/60GB: Actually has all the PS2 hardware. About 95% compatible. Some games act up.
US 80GB/EU 60GB: Has PS2 graphics chip, no PS2 CPU. About 60% compatible, maybe more, maybe less. Some games cannot be completed. Many games will get as far as a splash screen, not as many will play through and do everything.
40GB and everything else, including new US 80GB (we think): No PS2 games. Period.

Julie

Is the 40GB one backwards compatible?

20 and 60 gigs are fully backwards compatible with both PS2 and PS1 games. They are hard to find and you need to get a used one, they are first gen PS3.

80 gig are ~75% backwards compatible with PS2 games and all PS1 games. you can go to http://www.us.playstation.com/Support/CompatibleStatus to find out.

40 gig are fully backwards compatible with PS1 games.

Damn beat by seebs :D And ya the new 80 gigs are apparently NOT going to be compatible...which is why I pushed for us to get one NOW before I lost that. (And yet all Ive been playing are a few demos that are a fricken hoot. Pain is the funniest game ever!)

Everything seebs said.

Avoid HDMI if possible. The HDMI spec was designed with the primary goal of developing a cable with built in support for DRM, with signal quality as a secondary goal.

The PS3 is the most fully featured Blu Ray player currently on the market, and it's also, ya know, a Playstation.

Also, 52" 1080p LCD, self-mounted. :tmtongue:

Is the 40GB one backwards compatible?
No. One thing you should note about the backward compatibility is that the 80 GB model's compatibility is software driven so it is inferior to the 60 GB model. If you want full compatibility you would be better served trying to get a 60 GB Playstation 3 on Ebay.

Sony is phasing out backward compatibility as well.

Ensign Steve
08-05-2008, 04:06 AM
Does that apply to PS1 games as well? Why would there be some models/configurations/whatevers that support PS1 and not PS2? Is it cuz PS1 is so simple, any machine can work it? If that's the case, I should be able to play it on future machines as well, you think?

Julie
08-05-2008, 05:16 AM
PS1's are rendered thru an emulator are are software driven.

THe 40Gigs have the hardware to run the PS2 games thats why they are the most compatible. The 80 Gig are a software backwards compatibility. Thats why they don't work as well.

IF it's just PS1 games your thinking of playing then any of the consoles will do.

MonCapitan2002
08-05-2008, 08:22 AM
It is the 60 GB model that is most compatible. The 40 GB model cannot play Playstation 2 games. If you are wondering why Sony has cut it out the answer is simple. They wanted to cut costs.

They've been cutting out the parts. Two theories apply:
1. Cost reduction. Weakness of this theory: The parts might cost $20 total.
2. Try to force PS3 owners to buy PS3 games; sales for PS3 games have been really low, while dev costs have been huge, and developers are jumping ship left and right.

PS1 games are less of a competitor -- no one's still making new ones. And it's very easy to make them work.

Part of Sony's problem is that the Playstation 2 is still a viable platform. There is nothing that can fix that except for time.
