Like pain? Well, do I have just the thing for you! :hellyes: Smoke, and poor circulation, among the many other negative side effects from smoking, could very well get you the results you seek! :excited: I, myself, am a living testament to just some of the awesome pain that smoking can cause. :ovation:
Due to poor circulation caused by smoking a pack and a half of full flavor ciggs for about 20 years, I've had problems with the nails on my big toes dying off and on over the past few years. Well, after the last death, my nail is growing back nice and healthy, however, as has happened in the past when they grow back, it doesn't want to play nice and grow where it's supposed to grow. Oh, noooooo... we can't have that. :nuhuh: It wants to explore new territory. :pirate:
Well, if you've never had the pleasure, let me tell you, ingrown toe nails and toe nails attempting to become ingrown SUCK :donkey::tennisball::tennisball:!!!. The nail is almost all the way in now but decided at the last bit it had to try to become ingrown. :shakefist:
While that hurts in and of itself, digging the nail out of my flesh multiple times a day so that it doesn't become truly ingrown and infected (which will land me at the dreaded :evilsmirk: foot doctor again.. and I vowed after the first and last time, never, ever again :suckthumbscared:) hurts so fucking bad that I break out into full sweat, whimper, almost cry, and, but of course, :shakecurses:, and this is even after soaking the offended foot to soften it up! :O_o:
So... like pain? Smoke! It's guaranteed to get your rocks off! :larrythrust:
Now, off I go to inflict more pain on myself. :eager:
:stupidme:

Bah! I got that joy and pain before I started smoking!
They have a nifty surgery where they can scrape away the cells that grow nails at the edge of the nail bed so the nails dont actually grow into the skin anymore...but be warned the anesetic dosn't work if there is infection present...and if your tow is bad enough they will keep doing the surgery even if you can feel it...but they will get a few very nice orderlies to come and hold down your foot/leg while the doctor "Works as fast as he can"
(And then for extra special added fun...your Mom will have picked up rental crutches at the grocery store, which will promply collapse as soon as you get out of the car at school. But for added bonus the grocery store will offer you $1000 to settle this matter without involving "insurance or anything like that". $1000 would be exactly enough to spend one entire month at horse camp. Damn that was a good year.)

Yeah, fuck all that. I'll cause myself pain rather than let someone else. :nojustno:
Just think, if I ever come down with lung cancer, I'll be the first person in history to have performed lung cancer surgery on herself. :brainsurgery:

:thankee: & :giggle:
There was no white puss this morning and instead of the whole top of the toe red, puffy and tender, it only hurts where I performed surgery last night. I doused it with peroxide during and after surgery, dried it, and then put polysporin on it. So, it looks like it's doing better but it hurts like hell where I dug that last bit of nail out that I've been afraid to touch for a week now. :tremble:
The Imitrex is working now too, so the resulting migraine be damned. :shakefist:

Then the pain registered :rarrow: :bigtear:

That was about 30 years ago, it's been fine ever since. The other great toe does ingrow, but never gets infected, not even the time I stubbed it and separated most of the nail off the nail bed. Before that I had the right toenail removed three separate times, each time it grew back the same way. Oh, and I don't smoke, never did.

.. Oh, and I don't smoke, never did.:chuckle:
For the record, I never said, nor insinuated, that ingrown toenails result from smoking.
The problem I'm presently undergoing is trying to keep a toenail from growing into the skin while it grows back after having died and fallen off due to poor circulation which, in my case, was partly due to smoking.

I've had ingrown toe-nails removed on both of my big toes. They applied some sort of chemical that keeps it from growing back on that side, so I don't get ingrown toenails there any more. Is that not option for you, Shelli?

Sorry if I confused you Dingfod, but I thought I was pretty clear, and to be honest with you, I'm not feeling all that well today, so I'm in even less of a mood to spar with you than usual so, I'll just say this..
Your nail didn't fall off due to poor circulation caused by smoking. Mine did. Your nail didn't become ingrown due to falling off and growing in incorrectly. Mine did. Your nail fix by the doctor barely hurt at all. Mine did.
I started this thread because I'm in pain, Dingfod, not in order to spar with you.

Is that not option for you, Shelli? It's not quite as simple as that with what's gone on with me. The whole toenail dies and falls off and when it grows back, you never know if or where it will go screwy. :dunno:
This, hopefully, is the end of it though. :crossed: I've been off the smokes for over a year now and off the boatload of caffeine which was also helping contribute to the poor circulation. Here's hoping anyway. :=)

I've been off the smokes for over a year now...
If you don't mind me asking, how did you finally quit?
I smoked socially in college and upon graduation decided it was time to grow up. I haven't smoked since.
My brother, on the other hand, smokes over a pack a day and has yet to quit the habit. He's tried the patch and was somewhat successful until he went on vacation.. :/
For heavy smokers, does it just simply come down to quality of life? As far as I know, he doesn't have any specific ailments from smoking, but he's only 26. Unfortunately, I have a feeling he won't quit until something seriously detrimental to his health shows up.

Does the side change as to which part of the toenail becomes ingrown, then? I was just wondering if the same chemical could be applied after the toenail has fallen off on its own so that when it does grow back, only the non-ingrowing side and center of the toenail grow back, making future ingrown toenails that much less likely. Hopefully it's a moot point, though, and your toenail stops dying on you.

There's many reasons why I quit.. health, :dollah: & smell related.. all of which added up until I finally said, "ENOUGH!".
I'm allergic to the patch, the gum is disgusting, and I had a severe reaction (several reactions really :shudder:) to the Wellbutrin that my doctor prescribed for me to help me quit smoking. So, when I quit this last time, I used nicotine lozenges for a month and then went solo from there. I gained 30 pounds, but luckily, I needed it, as one of the reasons I quit smoking was to gain weight.

It was happening to my big toenail on my other foot but that one has been fine for awhile now. :crossed: It's definitely a thought though, should this happen again to this nail. :yup2:

Out of curiosity, what's a bad tow? Is that what happens when you fail to hook the trailer up properly?
There was no white puss this morning ...
You have cats coming out of your feet? That would be pretty traumatic!

Smoking must be a heck of a thing to beat. My mother has smoked most of her adult life, as did my stepfather. He had been a bear of a man who weighed well over 200 pounds before the lung cancer struck. He weighed less than 100 pounds when he died.
While he was literally on his deathbed, he made my mother promise that she'd give up smoking, because he didn't want her to go through the hell that he'd gone through. Just before he died, she promised faithfully to never touch another cigarette. And she didn't -- for about 2 weeks. After that, the urge to smoke became so overwhelming that she couldn't resist, and she's been smoking regularly ever since. I can't even begin to imagine what it's like for something to have that kind of hold over a person.
Best wishes!
Michael

Well, at least the pain has paid off. :cheer: The infection is gone and my toe is not all red, inflammed and ouchie. :flex:
Now, it's just ouchie in the spot that I had to dig the nail out, but it doesn't hurt to wear socks and/or shoes. Before, it even hurt to have my bed sheets touch it. Made for a suck ass night's sleep for a couple of nights, lemme tell you.
It's better now, though, and going to get even betterer. :larrybounce:

btw.. the infection's gone, but it's far from over. Every night now until it grows past this point, I have to soak it and then pry it away from the skin in wants to grow into, and considering that the skin that it wants to grow into has recently had nail taken out of it, it's just a tad tender.[/understatement] :shudder:
