Awesome sweep of the saber event in fencing! U-S-A, indeed. While it would have been nice to see the actual competition, or even just a bit more than the winning touches. Seems to me that win like that would be a good opportunity to expose the public to fencing.

Still, this is all very typical of network coverage of the Games.

Hmm, I watched the entire matches on one of the secondary olympics networks (MSNBC, USA, or something). I was surprised how much of it involved simultaneous lunging capped off by simultaneous celebrations, with the poor judge being left to figure out who stabbed who first.

Anyway, hey France, neener neener! (http://www.nbcolympics.com/swimming/news/newsid=194272.html#instant+classic)

I dunno if 8/100 of a second counts as getting owned.

Still, a remarkable accomplishment in US swimming by someone not named Phelps. Unfortunately, I missed this, as I fell asleep pretty early last night.

I did manage to catch the women's team gymnastics. Man, the NBC commentators were harsh towards the Romanian team. But, then again, they did look pretty bad.

A lot of talk about the Chinese women being under 16 years of age. The cynic in me says that there's probably something to that, as some of the gymnasts did look awfully young. However, despite being Chinese, I'm not used to seeing Chinese faces, so I'm probably a horrible judge of age. They are small in stature, but so are many gymnasts and many many more Asian people, so I can't really judge by that.

If I'm not mistaken the women's gold and bronze medalists in the sabre comptetition both train at the Northwest Fencing Center in Beaverton, which is at the west end of the street I live on. Less than 1/2 a mile from my apartment.

Northwest Fencing Center (http://nwfencing.com/)

I drive by it all the time and have on occasion thought about stopping in but never have.

I didn't miss it, and didn't Phelps swim the first split? His goofy mug is in the photo, too.

Anyway, those English birds beat us by 0.07, so, owned I guess.

Edit: Oh, I get it. Your thing could be read to mean "three someones not named Phelps, plus Phelps".

I should clarify, it's not that I didn't know Phelps was part of the team. But, from the accounts I read, it was the last swimmer, Jason Lezak, who clinched it for USA. He had to come from a full body length behind to beat the French.

I was watching women's team volleyball last night. The Americans got their ass handed to them on a platter by Cuba in the first game. They were dishing it back the next one and were on the way to kicking butts when I went to bed. Unfortunately, I did not dream of lanky v-ball dames.

Edit: USA lost.

Hey.....I just saw the male beach volleyball competitors....

Is that some kind of sex discrimination, or not. After my watching the US women (I'm a Kerri Walsh fan!), Swimmer was exceedingly disappointed that the men didn't have comensurate uniforms....

The women's team competition is Tuesday. What was on yesterday was qualifying.

The Romanian system collapsed after Octavian Belu left. The Russians aren't that hot, either (since Archayev left)*--though Semenova is a new light, and I loved Pavlova in '04.

*In the 2007 worlds team final, the Russians had the bronze locked up [US gold, CHN silver] when one of their girls had a brain fart and balked on her vault (The new system doesn't allow you to drop the lowest score, the old one did). Russia dropped to dead last, and basically handed the Romanians the bronze.

There is no way in hell He Kexin is 16. Deng LinLin looks about 9--and she's not even part of the controversy.

And can I just say that ALL gymnastics followers absolutely HATE the NBC commentators? :stab:

Anybody who truly appreciates athletic competition HATES the NBC approach to the Olympics. It's distinct parochialism, pumping the "wez gotz moar golduz den youse" aspect. The "color" pieces are just pablum for infantile audiences. Much of the real drama is being just papered over in pandering to "superior Americanism" bullshit.

Is anybody else tired of hearing about fucking Phelps?

I'm tired of hearing about Tibet, too. What about fucking East Turkestan?

Christ, you'd at least think NBC would teach SOMEONE how to pronounce things. The Parade of Nations made me stabby, to say nothing of how they pronounce the names of some athletes.

By the way, for those wondering why the swimming world records are being destroyed, blame Speedo:

http://www.dailytech.com/Speedos%20TechnoSwimsuit%20Ignites%20Olympic%20Controversy/article12636.htm

The LZR Racer breathes high tech. Speedo designed the suit with input from NASA, ran tests on more than 100 different fabrics, and conducted body scans of world-class swimmers. The ultra-thin suit material repels water, reduces muscle oscillations, and lowers hydrodynamic drag by up to 10%. The individual panels are ultrasonically welded together, rather than stitched. Speedo even claims it increases a swimmer's oxygen efficiency. It can take 30 minutes for a swimmer to struggle into it and, once on, shoehorns the body into a more aerodynamic shape.

The first time the suit was put on in an official meet, three world records were broken.

Congratulations to Nastia Liukin and Shawn Johnson!!! Who finished 1 & 2 despite heavily biased scores in the first two rotations!

I love them both, and I am SO happy Nas finally has an AA gold!! In 2005 at the Worlds, Chellsie Memmel beat her for the gold by .001. In 2007, Shawn got gold and Nastia was fifth (tie for bronze).
