View Full Version : My favorite surcharge

So everybody knows about the proliferation of ticket surcharges to try to slow the hemorrhaging of cash at the airlines. Baggage fees, fuel surcharges, elimination of free snacks, all that stuff. I grumble about it but I don't really mind because I think it's amazing that something as absurdly great as flying is so cheap, even with the surcharges. Fuel costs have beat the shit out of the airlines, so ticket costs have to go up. And the airlines get creative.
Anyway, I've been doing some very tentative travel planning tonight and I just found what has to be the greatest surcharge ever:

How much is it with the frills?

The (coach) ticket is $1480 WITH FRILLS, but there's no nofrills surcharge.
This particular surcharge may be from the travel agency, but I'm not sure.

Maybe they realize you're a frilled gecko? (http://www.flickr.com/photos/bsmith4815/140700914/)
Probably from the agent who is being stiffed their commission on the lower fare. Great name for it though :giggles:
Sounds like if you were to go through a drive-thru and hear:
"You want fries with that? No? Ok, that'll be an extra $1.20 for no fries. Pull to the second window."

They have that at Jack in the Box. The combo costs ten cents less than the sammich+drink without fries.
