Least Competent Criminals

Oblivious: In August in Billings, Mont., federal officers recognized Wyoming fugitive Sterling Wolfname, 26, on the street, but the man tried to give a different name, seemingly oblivious that "Wolfname" was tattooed on the side of his head. [The Missoulian (Missoula)-AP, 8-14-08]

Fugitive Willie Vickers, 46, was arrested in Cleveland Heights, Ohio, in July on old burglary warrants after he volunteered to help a woman and a police officer get into her locked car. Vickers said he had lots of experience with locked cars, seemingly oblivious of tipping the officer to run his name through the computer. [WEWS-TV (Cleveland), 7-9-08]

The economic slowdown and rising prices for scrap metals have provoked desperation and creativity among down-market criminals. A 42-year-old man was arrested in his car heading for a metals-recycling center in Miami in July with a 40-foot-long municipal street lamp strapped to the roof. And police in Williamsburg, Ky., easily tracked the stolen railroad rail in August, which was so heavy that it left gouge marks in the pavement as the thieves dragged it away. And the badly burned man found in July by police on a utility pole in northwest Dallas died days later (one of several who so far this year have tried, unsuccessfully, to safely remove copper wire from power poles). Police respond to pet bird’s screams of ‘help me’
TRENTON, N.J. — Police who were called to a house in Trenton after people heard screams inside were surprised to find that the noise was a pet bird.

The people who heard the “screams” said it sounded like a woman screaming “Help me!”

It took police a while to get in the house, because there was also a big German shepherd inside. But once they got in, they found Luna — a cockatoo with a limited but loud vocabulary.

Luna’s owner had no idea why the bird was screaming. Police did not charge the family.

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - It wasn't just the caffeine that gave an Iowa woman an extra jolt after she had her morning coffee. It was also the bat she found in the filter.

The Iowa Department of Public Health says the woman reported a bat in her house but wasn't too worried about it. She turned on her automatic coffee maker before bedtime and drank her coffee the next morning.

She discovered the bat in the filter when she went to clean it that night. The woman has undergone treatment for possible rabies.

Health officials say that the bat was sent to a lab but that its brain was too cooked by the hot water to determine whether it had rabies.

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. - A man who caused damage at a waste water treatment plant in Eau Claire has decided to pick public humiliation over jail time to pay for his crime.

Eau Claire County Judge Paul Lenz gave Shane McQuillan an option after he was found guilty of criminal damage to property for ramming his car into a closed gate at the plant.

McQuillan could spent time in jail, or spend a day outside the plant holding a sign that says "I was stupid." McQuillan chose the sign sentence Wednesday.

The 22-year-old told an officer after the incident last March that he had been drinking and was "just being stupid."

PUTNAM COUNTY, Fla. -- A North Carolina woman was arrested on Friday night after complaining to Putnam County deputy about the quality of the crack cocaine she had purchased.

Eloise D. Reaves, 50, walked up to Deputy Jeffery Pedrick at about 11:30 p.m. while he was working a call at a convenience store located at the corner of state Road 20 and state Road 21 in the Hawthorne area of Putnam County.

According to police, Reaves told the deputy that a man in the parking lot had sold her bad crack. They said Reaves then took the crack from out of her mouth and placed it on the trunk of the deputy's patrol car.

Pedrick informed Reaves that if the substance tested positive for cocaine, she would be arrested. When the test came back positive, Reaves complained that it was wax and cocaine mixed, and that she wanted the deputy to make the man give her her money back.

Reaves was arrested and booked into the Putnam County Jail and held on $1,504 bond, on which she was later released.

Police said the man whom Reaves accused of selling the cocaine was contacted by Pedrick. He denied knowing Reaves and allowed the deputy to search him. The search revealed that he did not have any cocaine or money on him.
