In Windows, you hold down the Alt and Prnt Screen keys, then open a photo editing program or even just Word or Powerpoint or some such thing and press Ctrl-V to paste in the capture. Usually they need cropping or resizing, so I prefer using a photo editor which then allows me to do an easy save as jpg.
Was that at all understandable? :)
Using Windows? You can just hit the "Print Screen" key on your keyboard which saves the screenshot as a bitmap to the clipboard. Then open a graphics viewer/editor like Irfanview or MS Paint, paste the image onto the canvas, select the portion you want to save, crop the image, and save as a .jpg or .gif file. :)
Oops, I see liv beat me to it. Although I have never used the Alt key along with "Print Screen" to capture the screen.

Adding the Alt ensures you only capture the top window instead of your whole desktop.

The methods provided above work really well, but in case this is something you do on a regular basis, I have been using a tool called Grabit Pro (http://www.sebd.com/grabit_pro.html) for years.
Just another FYI.

Get Meazure from http://www.cthing.com/
It's free. It grabs any selected portion of the screen, and has other cool features, like telling you what colour any pixel on the screen is, or magnifying areas of the screen, or just measuring them (hence its name).
It's easy to use, and the software website has a cat avatar, so it must be good. One of the best pieces of 'free' software for windoze that I've ever used.

Good point.
I also like their concept of "bathrobe development". :yup:
Another great screenshot utility is Capture from AnalogX (http://www.analogx.com/welcome.htm). I especially like its ability to save the captures to a folder you specify.
This is a Windows 95/98/NT screen capture utility... Just run capture, and a
small camera will appear in the system Tray (the lower right corner of the
screen, by the clock), if you left click on the camera, a screencap will be
taken (by default it will be stored in the same directory you ran Capture from),
if you right click on it, you bring up the menu of options. It should work at
all screen resolutions and color depths, and outputs a Windows Bitmap (BMP)
file. When you do a screencap, the icon on the system tray will simulate a
little flash, so you know it's grabbed it!
From the right click menu, you can configure exactly what the program will do
when you left click on the icon; there are a variety of options, so you get
exactly what you're after. You can have it save the screen capture to either
a file or the clipboard, or both; you can also have it capture the entire
desktop, or just the active application window. You can have Capture name each
screencap automatically, or you can have it prompt for a filename after each
capture, as well as specifying the output directory for the files.

These are way cool, guys, thanks. Not that I intend to do much of this sort of thing, but having the references is really neat!

New and different question, but sorta the same:
I have downloaded a couple of pix from my digital camera onto the digital camera "album" page. How do I put the pictures on here? e.g., in gallery, or in a thread or something?
Thanks!

One thing you need to be aware of is that image files from digital cameras tend to be huge and not very web friendly, so they should be edited before uploading. IrfanView (http://www.irfanview.com/) is a nice little freeware program that you can use for cropping, resizing, and compressing the images.
Once your pic is ready to post, it's easiest to post it as an attachment. You can do that by clicking the Manage Attachments button down below the reply box. Then you browse to the folder where the image is stored and you upload it.
I've only posted to the galley once so I'm not sure of the details there.
Good luck, md. :)

You don't have to download any new program to resize them. You can upload them into the member's gallery, and it resizes them automatically. Also, your "album" software probably has a "save for web" feature somewhere on it already.
To put your pictures up here, go to Gallery (which I guess is under "Site Navigation" these days) and choose "Upload." Click the "Choose File" button, and browse for the photo you want to upload. If you're not sure where your album software saves the photos, you can search on the file name. Or else just select the photo again and do a "Save as" and save a copy into your My Pictures folder. Anyway, once you have chosen your picture, click "ok" (or "open" - not sure what the command is in windows). Then scroll to the bottom and click "Submit."
Have fun! Let's see those Kitties!! :cat:

Yeah, what (and how) Ensign Steve says! Put 'em in the gallery, please!
