View Full Version : The Skull Thread

:news:
For too long, interesting skulls have been relegated to toil in obscurity in post-slutting and counting threads, in weirdliness and oddities threads, and, in the worst miscarriage of decency, miscellany and lolcats threads. I am fed up with it. I believe skulls need to be elevated in status so as to have their very own thread. Therefore, I give you:
:shakeskull: :skell: :keep: :skullove: :skulfire: THE SKULL THREAD:skulfire: :skullove: :keep: :skell: :shakeskull:
Post all your skull pictures and breaking skull news in this thread. :thankee:

This work entitled Third Eye, a study of "the beauty of decay," uses precious metals like titanium and silver to expose the memory of time onto film, sheering the 150 year old skull of a 13 year old girl.

Sublime and spooky at the same time, these wondrously detailed confections are handcrafted from premium Guittard chocolate. Valerie Confections, an artisanal chocolatier in Los Angeles, created the assortment of miniature skulls for us, and they arrive in a coffin-shaped box. Included are milk, bittersweet and white chocolate. 3 oz. Set of six, two of each flavor. A Williams-Sonoma exclusive.
I just ordered these goodies for our October visit with SharonDee, so you will be seeing these in person soon!

http://www.cbu.edu/~aross/companat/shark-chondrocranium-ventral(dried)-CBU.jpg
It's the "skull" of a shark. Sharks have no bones so, technically, don't have skulls. (A shark's skeleton is made of cartilage, not bone.) Therefore, the "skull" of a shark is properly known as its chondrocranium.
Oh, and sharks do get cancer, just like all other vertebrate animals. While it's true that cartilage is a lot less prone to become cancerous than are many other body tissues, even bone, that's because cartilage has no direct blood supply and therefore grows very slowly as a rule. Slow-growing tissues with no direct blood supply rarely become cancerous. So taking "shark cartilage" pills will not reduce your chances of getting cancer. All it will do is make you a little poorer, some quack a little richer, and some poor sharks dead.

Not much on this computer...only two measley skull pictures.
Still, quality skulls, my friends. Parasauropholus and human skulls.
Sometimes I think we should have a large sinus cavity sticking out the top of our heads--and I could sell my old snorkeling gear on eBay.
Of course, if we ALL had a huge nasal crest on the top of our heads, no one would NEED my old snorkeling gear now would they...

:psst: It's actually Parasaurolophus, not Parasauropholus.
The nostrils of Parasaurolophus were at the front, just like any other dinosaur's. So even though the nasal cavities extended into the impressive head crest, the crest couldn't have been used as a snorkel. It was probably used as a resonating chamber to amplify the animal's calls.
Most of the lambeosaurs had some pretty impressive headgear, but for a dinosaur with a truly bizaare skull, you can't beat Oviraptor, in my opinion.

I knew him, Horatio: a fellow of infinite jest, of most excellent fancy: he hath borne me on his back a thousand times; and now, how abhorred in my imagination it is! my gorge rises at it. Here hung those lips that I have kissed I know not how oft. Where be your gibes now? your gambols? your songs? your flashes of merriment, that were wont to set the table on a roar? Not one now, to mock your own grinning? quite chap-fallen? Now get you to my lady's chamber, and tell her, let her paint an inch thick, to this favour she must come; make her laugh at that.

The Ambassadors - Hans Holbein the younger (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Ambassadors_(Holbein))
The most notable and famous of Holbein's symbols in the work, however, is the skewed skull which is placed in the bottom centre of the composition. The skull, rendered in anamorphic perspective, another invention of the Early Renaissance, is meant to be nearly subliminal as the viewer must approach the painting nearly from the side to see the form morph into a completely accurate rendering of a human skull.

The Skeleton Church (http://www.getwonder.com/2008/06/awesome-the-skeleton-church/)
The Sedlec Ossuary ( Kostnice Sedlec) is a Roman Catholic Church in Sedlec, The Czech Republic, famous for its unusual, organic decorations.
Unlike other churches that like to use religious paintings and religious jewelery as decorations, this one uses between 40,000 and 70,000 human bone.

Ah, the sphenoid; that's definitely my favorite bone! So delicate yet so strong. So symmetrical and so beautiful; it looks like a butterfly.
In my Human A&P classes, I always wax lyrical when showing and describing the sphenoid. Once, during a review session, while trying to get students to name bones, processes, foramina, etc., I simply said, "This is my favorite bone." The whole class immediately replied, "the sphenoid!".

Today I got to walk into a giant skull! :flowerdance:
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3496/3824335501_da8c0b6998.jpg
It was at the Kimball Art Museum. There is a fantastic exhibition going on right now callled Butchers, Dragons, Gods, and Skeletons. Filmaker Phillip Haas did media art installations for five of the works in the Kimball's collection. The skull film was shown on four screens inside the skull, each screen running a different perspective of the same narrative. It's tough to explain. The narrative was both the story of what the painting presents, as well as its creation, overlaid intertextually. It was magical.
This is the James Ensor painting that the skull installation was centered on:
http://www.artmuseumtouring.com/images/Museums/Kimbell/ensor_350.jpg
Skeletons Warming Themselves, 1889
Which is one of my faves!
Here is a shot of one section of the film:
http://envymags.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/08/dallas_art_august2.jpg
(Which really doesn't do it justice)
Here is a picture of the room that did an interpritation of Apollo and the Contients by Giovanni Tiepolo that liv would go ga-ga over:
http://blog.livedesignonline.com/briefingroom/wp-content/uploads/2009/08/tiepolo1.jpg
Three walls and the ceiling were all projections, with the fourth wall covered by a mirror. The ceiling did a slow detail of all of the figures in the original, before finally uniting them in a glorious whole, the full fresco. The walls had the artist on one side painting, across from him was a woman reclining and gazing into a mirror, which the artist on the opposite wall was reflected in. Really amazing.
liv would also love the The Death of Pentheus.
Here is a local link (http://www.kera.org/artandseek/content/2009/07/27/review-butchers-dragons-gods-skeletons-at-the-kimbell/) that does a far better job of describing the different things, and has clips of the different installations. My particular favorite was Annibale Caracci's The Butcher Shop.
Two screens facing each other, with the artist and easel set up on one side, and the butchers seting up the tableau and goofing around. The beautiful detail shots of marbled beef on one screen, while the texture of cadmium red oils and white and yellow on the other was really cool. Then the interplay between subject and artist was grand.

I discovered a new artist yesterday. Well, not new -- he was working in the mid-19th century -- but new to me. His name is Antoine Wiertz. He was Belgian and what was once his studio is now a museum dedicated to his awesomely pulpy oeuvre, featuring many skulls/corpses/nekkid people.
So this is what you find looking for new kinds of pr0n?

One of my favorite things about OS X is the ease and flexibility one has in using icons for apps, files and folders. Every once and again I browse a few different sites looking to see what's new. I came across these and wanted to share.

I couldn't get enough of her dress. :aww: :skullove:That's hotter than this attractive woman I saw at the county health department today who looked like she just stepped off the set of Mad Men, floral print dress, black-rimmed glasses, bobbed 60s hairstyle and all. Even her purse fit the style.

Here I am, getting Google Maps directions from La Pine, Oregon to Bend and what do I see right in the middle of the satellite view screen? A skull! Enlarge it and you'll see it too.

From an ossuary in the Skete Prodromos on Mount Athos. The inscription says in Romanian "What I am, you will be, too. What you are, I've been myself." Them monks sure know how to trick out some bones.

A rather popular inscription on mausoleums, tombs and various representations of mortality.
Other common phrases include
Memento Mori, "Remember you must die."
Omnes Vulnerant - Ultima Necat, "Each one wounds - The last one kills" (on time pieces)
