Well...it's been, by and large, a unexciting beginning to the college football season.

Until tonight.

I just checked the final and lowly, unranked Oregon State beat number one ranked USC, 27-21, at Corvallis.

(The Beavers shredded the Trojans....now is that provocative, or what?)

:woohoo:

Yeah...That's what I like! Upsets by underdogs!

I am so happy to see usc lose, I hate them, I mean how the fuck can the team that is in a conference that doesn't have any other ranked teams be ranked number one in the nation?

Heh...It looks as though we've had a comeuppance weekend of college football.

Amongst those, the Hokies beat the Huskers in Nebraska. :cheer:

It's really refreshing to see USC lower on the conference ranking than OSU. UO is next week. They come down there.

IMHO, one of the most underrated college teams this year is Oklahoma State, now at #21 in the AP and #22 in the USA Today polls. They're leading the nation in rushing offense (340 yards per game), third in the nation in offensive scoring.

I don't know what to make of a season where Vandy is at the top of the SEC (and in the top 25, for that matter). I see it on TV and I read it in the papers, but my mind just can't accept it. It's like bizarro world.

BTW, speaking of Tennessee, I loved how the Vols just gave that touchdown to Auburn, helping them win the game. The quarterback just tossed the ball right on the ground, in Auburn's end zone, right in front of a couple of defensive guys. We're so proud of him for not making it too hard on the other team.

Dammit, looks like I'm going to have to pull for the Commodores this season, which is something I never expected to seriously say.

Yeah...

I'm thinkin' that Vandy should move up the list, too (they were #21 on my AP list). There are still some biggies, but it's interesting to see BYU, Texas Tech, Alabama, Missouri, and Utah, along with Vanderbilt, still up there with Oklahoma and LSU.

I know the evil elephants stomped on us, but it is ok.

I just wanted to take this opportunity to say ROLL TIDE! Saban has one hell of a defensive line and the quick jump from being #24 to #3 in the SEC makes me really proud to be a fan.

Because the entire state of alabama is retarded, godfry.

You have the crimson elephantile tide of alabama and at auburn you have the war eagles/tigers.

They are just confused over there.

godfry n. glad

Hmmm....

I thought it might be because they would trample out a tide of blood from their opponents...but they're supposed to be the crimson tide, right? And I thought a crimson tide was a killer tide. I guess I'm just not following the allusions.

Well, around here, we don't want to appear too intimidating.

...I mean, Beavers and Ducks? C'mon, this is the source of plenty of multiple entendre, but little intimidation.

Sharon! Bite your tongue! Sure, the Vols are in a slump, but it's too soon for anarchy. And of all teams to turn to, you had to pick Alabama... the only thing lower would be to root for Florida.

No matter how bad it hurts, or how humiliating it may be, we must stand beside our (once) mighty Volunteers. For verily I say unto you, they shall rise out of the dust, like the Phoenix, and reign down orange justice upon the heathen Gators, Bulldogs, Wareagle/tigers, and even the Roll Tide.

I work at a university which has no athletic competition. Not a single team.

I've always wondered whether the university might start one....Of course, since we're the health care university, our team color would have to be pink...being 'in the pink', y'know. With insulated white lab jackets and scrubs for warmups.

Then, we'd have to have an intimidating nickname for the team. Something to instill fear in our opponents. Something which alludes to the inevitability of their team being pwnd in competition....I know!....The Proctologists. To become widely known as 'the Probing Proctologists'. (Cheerleaders would be screaming, "TURN YOUR HEAD AND COUGH!!!" and "THIS WON'T HURT!!")

But, evidently, postgraduate medical types tend to consider rough-n-tumble athletic competition as beneath their proper station in life.

Hey...Tanda?

Why 'Crimson Tide' if the mascot is an elephant?

"The name "Crimson Tide" is supposed to have first been used by Hugh Roberts, former sports editor of the Birmingham Age-Herald. He used "Crimson Tide" in describing an Alabama-Auburn game played in Birmingham in 1907, the last football contest between the two schools until 1948 when the series was resumed. The game was played in a sea of mud and Auburn was a heavy favorite to win.

But, evidently, the "Thin Red Line" played a great game in the red mud and held Auburn to a 6-6 tie, thus gaining the name "Crimson Tide." Zipp Newman, former sports editor of the Birmingham News, probably popularized the name more than any other writer. " (source) (http://bryantmuseum.ua.edu/direction.cfm?dir=traditions1)

I don't think the Alabama Packiderms would have been such a bad name. :dunno:

OU beat Mizzou 62-21, a thorough rout. Missouri couldn't stop OU at all. I went to bed just before halftime, when the score was 31-7.

Before the game, a plane flew over towing a banner that read: ENJOY THE BEATBYTEXAS.COM BOWL. This game was bitter fruit for Texas, who had beaten both Missouri and Oklahoma. To be fair, all three had identical win-loss records, and by all rights, before BCS, Texas and playoff games came into the picture, Texas would've been declared the conference champion. But OU and Mizzou scored more points against their opponents than Texas did, OU setting a new NCAA record for points scored, running up their BCS score. Texas' only loss was to Texas Tech, prompting someone to hire a plane towing another message over Austin earlier this week: HEY MACK. QUIT WHINING. U KNEW THE RULES.

I’m glad Alabama lost. They are my most hated team, due to an incident in their game against some forgotten team two weeks ago. I wasn’t watching the game, but I happened to be flicking through the channels and see an Alabama punt. ‘Bama was ahead by about 30 points at the time. Their punter shanked his punt, which went out of bounds about 20 yards from the line of scrimmage.

When the punter returned to the sidelines, Nick Saban, the #1 (at the time) ranked team’s coach, got in the kid’s face and screamed at him – for quite a while. This was all captured on national TV. What had the kid possibly done, one wonders, to induce such a tirade? Did he blow an assignment, through lack of concentration? Did he fail, somehow, to follow the (asshole) coach’s orders? Of course not. His only failure was a physical one – he failed to kick the ball as high or as far as Nick Saban would have desired.

What possible reason could Nick Saban have had for screaming at the kid, his face inches away from the punter’s face? We can hardly imagine that any stress Saban caused the kid would ensure better punting next time – in fact, it is likely that nerves would make the kid punt less effectively. Two possibilities remain: first, Nick Saban is an out-of-control asshole, who lost it. Second, Saban was putting on a show for the other players – trying to intimidate them, or show how much HE cares about Alabama’s performances. In either case, if the punter had been my son I would have been sorely tempted to transfer several of Saban's front teeth to the back of his throat, using my clenched fist.

Most football coaches (including high school) cuss at the players. Saban was just doing his job. Guess it worked. They had an incredible record this year and my guess is that Tiffin would have nothing but good to say about his coach.

I'm liking the BCS matchups I've seen so far. The Oklahoma State - Oregon game was a good match, despite the outcome. Utah showed 'Bama they can play some football last night. In fact, undefeated Utah should probably be ranked #1.

I'm not even a big fan of televised sports, but I find myself looking forward to the Tulsa - Ball State game Tuesday night and the Oklahoma vs Florida game Wednesday. These I will watch.
