I just cut open a 10 lb bag of chicken leg quarters and my nose immediately scrunched up with a very strong, distinct sulphur smell. I bought it thawed a couple/few days ago and it's been in the fridge ever since. There's no date on the package that I can see. Maybe it's not bad, but I'm not eating it. :yuck:

Mmmm, mmm, is it slimy and grey as well? :hungry:

You might try taking it back to the market, even if you don't have a receipt showing when you purchased it. My sister does that with meat and vegetables that die much more quickly than expected and the markets usually replace or reimburse. You might call the store and see what their policy is.

10 lbs is a lot to lose. :sadcheer:

Chicken that won't be used within a day (or two, at most) of purchase should be frozen. A package like you bought should be repackaged into packages with no more chicken pieces than you would use at any one time. Avoid excess handling like cutting up the chicken and don't rinse before freezing; do that at cooking time.

Good advice pesci, but it's already out by the curb and anyway I'm not sure $9 is worth taking it all the way back to Albertson's. The smell was already filling the kitchen. :yuck:

I usually am really careful like that, Skeptoid. But I just checked the receipt and I bought this chicken the day before yesterday, so it should've been safe. :(

Are you a known regular at this store? Most stores around here will usually replace the product upon complaint and proof of purchase. They might also want any codes/dates from the package but they don't demand, in fact discourage, return of spoiled product.

Ewww. Alberton's? I hate Albertson's. Around here they aren't known as the best place to buy meat either. Or anything else that spoils quickly. Let's just put it this way, if you can smell the fish from the front of the store, it's probably not a good thing.

Nope. I've only been there a few times since I moved here. If I remember I'll ask next time I go there. I always forget things like this, though. That's why coupons are useless for me.

Hehe. It's weird. The Albertsons in Dana Point, California was really nice. But the one here is very slummy. I alternate between it and the really nice Kroger across the street. I think I'll start hitting the Kroger more regularly. :yup:

Funny, around here, Albertson's is the place to buy meat.

Funny, around here, Albertson's is the place to buy meat. The Albertson's nearest me is only about four years old and a really nice store, but I can smell the meat department, particularly the seafood, when you walk in the front door. I can't believe I'm the only one to smell what is obviously a rancid meat smell. I bought a package of chicken there when they first opened up, before they had the stench, and had exactly the same experience as vm.

The place to buy meat in the Tulsa area is Reasor's (http://www.reasors.com/), a local chain. Homeland, Food4Less, Warehouse Market, and Albertson's all suck by comparison. SuperWalmart and Walmart Neighborhood Markets are pretty good. Oh yeah, I forgot Sam's Club.

Before they closed it down last year, we had a Winn Dixie where you could always go to find questionable meats. Hamburger was brown on the sell by date and other meats weren't much better. There was one of those stores in Raleigh that actually got caught repackaging meat. bleh :firstaid:

In Utah, it was Smith's that had the stinky meat department. Albertson's was dirty, cluttered and checkouts as slow as K-Mart used to be. That's why we shopped at Harmon's.

I'm mortified by the nine dollar cost for a ten pound bag-oh the horror! I just bought a bag yesterday for three-fifty. Anyway, I have had meat like that. What I do is wash it really good first to see if the smell goes away, well, as long as the meat looks very pink and fresh. If it is yellowy or greyish, I don't even bother. I toss it out. If it smells decent after water bath, I usually just soak it in a white vinegar and water mixture for about ten minutes to kill bacteria.

As far as Albertson's goes, I like the store, but it is very pricey unless you shop only for the deals. We have some new or remodeled stores around here that are rather upscale. When my kids were little and a handful, I would be stressing out trying to unload the cart and trying to keep my daughter sitting inside the cart and my son next to me all at once. The manager or worker always came to help me unload my cart and I always got the utmost of service and care. Right now I mainly shop at Publix, though, they have a Japanese sushi chef who makes outstanding sushi at extremely low prices.

edit: I just wanna add, I would never feed my family or eat something suspect. All meat usually smells pretty rank to me. It's just that sometimes chicken blood, well, any blood, even when the meat is extremely fresh, has this really wierd smell to it and I usually find the smell offensive. But bagged chicken quarters usually has a noticable amount of blood in it so I wash the meat really well before I decide to toss it out.

No, it's about pampered foul fowl eaters.

Oh.

In that case regular beatings should keep them fresh. Spare the rod and spoil the foul fowl eater, I say.
