For Ymir's blood and anyone else who has missed new arrivals, I've decided to make my 5000th post the OP of a new smilies alert thread. Honestly, I'm not sure which is more pathetic: my post count or the forum smiley count, but either way, it makes sense that they should dance this waltz together.

First, some fair commentary on both the obscene counts: :eyebrow3: :shiver: :not:

And now, a little something special for Ymir's blood collection: :cthulhu3:

Keep an eye on this thread for news of any future additions. Thank you.

What about a rooster smiley? When I posted Happy Year of the Rooster I had to settle for a chicken smiley instead. It was sad.

Pathetic??!! Pathetic??!! Please allow this drone to assure you that having far and away the best smiley collection of any board on the net significantly adds to our collective's perfection.

As for achieving 5,000 posts, in my case, "pathetic" may be an apt descriptive term. I believe Q explains my situation best:

Nevertheless, in your case, Captain, 5,000 posts demonstrates your dedication to our welfare.

I will comply. Please continue waltzing. http://sevenofnine.cherrytaco.com/Miscellanea/Emoticons/icon_Borg_Rosie.gif

You are an excellent drone. Perhaps someday you will rise to the level of counterpart.

Ah, the wisdom of the Q never ceases to make me :lmao:

Yeah, that's it. That's the ticket! I bring order to chaos, donchaknow.

I will comply. Please continue waltzing. http://sevenofnine.cherrytaco.com/Miscellanea/Emoticons/icon_Borg_Rosie.gif

I will indeed, and thanks to you (and the lovely Rosie who along with "seven" is a keyword for her creations), I have several new dance partners.

Unlikely, Captain, yet she is a worthy role model. It is worth the attempt.

Agreed...when I'm not terrified by it. He is like a diety of which Chakotey once spoke: Coyote...and Coyote always waits.

Nevertheless, in your case, Captain, 5,000 posts demonstrates your dedication to our welfare.

1000 posts: 2295 days (6.28 years)
2000 posts: 4795 days (13.12 years)
5000 posts: 12295 days (33.66 years)

Eldar, you are right. Pesci, zombie, crumb and vm were all cruel, heartlessly pointing out liv's momentary lapse in judgement. Whereas I was careful to praise first and then gently raise the question, in the spirit of improving. I was taking the generous and caring approach of someone who gives a few rand (dimes) to a poor soul clearly fallen on hard times. Even if she is a hopeless druggie.

Pesci, <snip> were all cruel, heartlessly pointing out liv's momentary lapse in judgement. Whereas I was careful...Excuuuuse me, but I challenge you to demonstrate how it is that I did anything but echo your kind words and offer what I feel is a very generous (and cute) alternate explanation. Benefit of the doubt, sir. My sleepy bear was not a mockery, but was a sincere favorable judgment granted in the absence of full evidence. :hmph:

JoeP
03-08-2005, 02:43 PM
P, I would surely give you the benefit of the doubt. I'm sure a case could be made (by a good lawyer) that "a bear falling face forward, asleep" is in some way a favourable judgement on a "bow" smilie.

But the doubt was cast by the injured party. My post: 06:29 PM (local time). No response from liv. 20 minutes pass. Your post: 06:49 PM. 11 minutes pass. Liv's post: 07:00 PM: "I hate myself."

The court can only conclude that my post was not offensive but yours - albeit unintentionally - was. I find you, and everyone else posting on this thread, guilty, and sentence you to 500 posts.

If you searched using the "any word" dropdown option instead of "all words", then I believe it's the n. found in the hovertext. That's one of the reasons I used "godfry" by itself for C&H. I didn't really want people turning up random n's and glads.

Ah, Crumb...

I, too, have sent some of my best, my most inspired deathless prose, into the ether. Usually inadvertantly. If I hit the "back" button on my browser, the setup dumps me out and I have to log back in and start all over. I tend to be far too cavalier in punching buttons; ergo, I edit a fair deal after I've posted.

Some days, it's just not worth chewing your way through the leather straps.

You have my sincerest condolences. Paying dues ain't fun. :sadnana:

:heh:

I had fun one summer afternoon a couple years back when I "admired" the "peeing Calvin" decal on the back window of a pickup truck parked next to my rig in a lot. The driver was proud of it, so I asked him where he got it and he gave me the name and location of the shop. I carefully wrote down all the information, thanked him kindly and informed him I'd stop by the shop to check if they still had them before I reported it to Bill Watterson's publisher for prosecution on copyright infringement.... and that I'd heard that the artist was really pissed off at this slanderous misrepresentation of his work.

He blinked...

Writing down his license number, I told him I'd tell the dealer I got the information from him.

I got in my van and drove off.

It was fun. I, of course, have done no such thing since.

I did it again when I got a chance to talk to an owner of one of the "praying Calvin" decals (actually Calvin and Susie praying at the base of a cross). Only this time I told him that it was my understanding that the artist was even more upset about the praying one than he was the pissing one.

Unless there could be a hack to not include all the different speeds in the smiley categories, but just append a number at the end to change the speed.

:meme: :meme1: :meme2: etc... (I know there already are some with number though)

but I don't think godfry is asking about different speeds, but really about different starting frames. If you could start the smilies at a different frame but at the same speed they would stay out of sync. but that is probably more difficult than changing the speed.

It's easy to change the animation frame rate, but you have to do it in a graphics program, save it and upload it. I can't imagine how it would be possible to make animation speed a user option. :hmm:I have some PHP code that assembles animated gifs on the fly. I used it for a program that converts chess matches (in the normal 1. e4 e5) format to tiny (in kb not pixels) animated gifs. I was very anal about making the gif's as tiny as possible, even though this made them more complex. I've attached an example.

If you like, I could make you some smiley adjusting code in php. This could either run once, when a user posts the special smiley, and cache the modified gif on the server, or run whenever a user displays a page containing the modified gif. The latter version would save storage space, but at the expense of extra server processing time (though I doubt that the processing time would ever become that significant).

The attached gif is for a 44 move chess match, any uses 180 frames of animation. It's pretty large in area, but only 18kb in size. It's a game I played against LuxFerum on mu.nu We decided it was a draw after 44 moves.

If we go for different starting frames for the gifs, that's easy. If we wish to scale the speed, then except for multiplying all the frame delays by integers, there will be some rounding errors. Say an animated smiley uses delays of 10, 12, 15, and 17 hundredths of seconds, and we want to make it run 25% slower - the best we could do would be to change the delays to 12, 13, 18 and 21, which is not quite right but no one would probably notice.

livius drusus
03-29-2005, 01:40 PM
I'd like, I'd like, I'd very much like. Thank you so much. :wriggle:

I'm not entirely sure I understand how it works, however. A certain smiley would have to be set up to run at the other speed, right? Would a user be able to pick the speed?

I think perhaps I'd better leave this end of the discussion to vm lest I look like even more like a blithering idiot than I already do. Gorgeous chess match though, this much I do know. :yup:

P.S. - Not that I know anything about chess, mind you. I just know about the gorgeous bit.

ceptimus
03-29-2005, 02:45 PM
I'll bung some example code on a PHP server I have access to - to show how it will work. You'll have to upload the gif to it, plus the required starting frame (or percentage I suppose) and the speed modifying multiplier. Then it will create a modified version of the gif and display it.

To incorporate the mod onto your board, we need to decide the best way for the users to specify the two parameters (where to start, and how fast to run) - that's something for vm and maybe Joe to consider. Then, as I said, the modified gif could either be saved somewhere on your server, and linked to, or we could set up the server to produce them as required.

The way you'd do this is to set up Apache and PHP to 'execute' .gif files (the same way it knows to execute a PHP file rather than just serve it out. The special module I'll write would then just load and serve the gif as normal, unless the filename is in a special format, when it would load the gif, process it, and serve out the processed version.

Sorry if this is too techy. I'm thinking that my mod might work like this...

path/smiley.gif just loads the file from the path and serves it out.

path/smiley.aa.bbb.gif (where aa and bb are numbers) loads the smiley from path/smiley.gif, alters it to start at frame aa% of the way through the sequence, and at bbb% of the original speed, and then serve that out.

Come to think of it, I could provide a couple of slider controls on the example page to allow the user to vary the start point and speed change.

It'll take me a few days to cobble together - I might have it ready by the weekend, depending on how busy I am with other stuff.

PM me any ideas you have or problems you foresee, or post them on this or another thread if you prefer.

livius drusus

Perhaps we ought to have a maximum smilies to member ratio. We can easily look after five smilies each and quite a few more than that, but we don't want our smilies to be neglected or unloved, so the ratio shouldn't get too high.

You could slow down the cycle with the freethought smiley processor (http://cgi.novaweig.force9.co.uk/FreethoughtSmileyProcessor/fsp.php), but the hands retracting back into the pockets needs a bit of artistic intervention.

Due to the way some smilies are animated, starting an animation at a frame other than the first may not work well, as can be seen in the "Shopping" smilie posted by cep.

ceptimus
04-04-2005, 11:45 PM
Hmmm. Good spot Skeptoid. I could fix it, but then the processing load would be much greater. I think the main function of the processor will be to change the speed anyway. There's no point in changing the starting point unless you're going to post more than one of the same smiley in the same post. Even then, most smilies will work fine - I think only the larger more complex ones rely on only redrawing parts of the image (which is what causes the glitch in that shopping one).

I'll see what I can do - but like I said, fixing them means a lot more processor load - rather than just rearranging the frames in a different order, it will have to render and then recompress them.

Perhaps I should remove the 'start point' parameter, and only let the speed be altered? :chin:

but how are you going to enable hover text? Not to mention the hovertext actually in the forum database at a point in time. Can your sp.php be incorporated into the vb code? (Of course, but would it make sense?)I can think of a few ways, but I need to see how the existing code works before I decide on the best way.

If we just alter the current code bit that outputs "smiley.gif" to "sp.php?f=smiley.gif" then we can still leave the ALT and TITLE fields exactly as at present, and the hovertext will still work. A bigger problem is how we pick up the speed and startpoint parameters (probably from slider bar controls when the post is made) and store that information. We could perhaps hide it in the filename, like "smiley.0.120.gif" or store it in some extra fields in the database.

When the testbed is up, and I have access (and time) I'll see if I can figure out a way that will have as little impact as possible on the existing hacks.

It might turn out to be more trouble than it's worth, but it'll be fun trying.
