I just noticed something strange with the forum search feature.

Go look at my post:
39697

and notice that it contains the word "forum".

Now do a search for the word "forum" posted by "xouper".

Does that post show up? Not for me.

If instead I search for the word "enormous" posted by "xouper", then that post does show up in the result.

Any ideas?

Any ideas?

Well, one, but it wouldn't be very professional of me to post it. :giggle:

Seriously, I haven't the foggiest, xoup. Perhaps vm will know. Meanwhile, I'll lurk around the ACP to see if I can find any reason for it.

xouper is once again attempting to further his anti-search feature agenda by whining about obscure little bugs that noone cares about. It's people like xouper who are giving the search feature a bad name.

xouper,

PLONK!

:roflmao: Good one, Skep.

I have no idea what the deal is with the search, xoup. I'm looking into it, but odds are one of you programmers is going to come up with the answer before I do. Speaking of whom... where's ceptimus been lately?

Edited to add: Color me observant. I just noticed he's posted several times over the last few days. I guess I'm the one who hasn't been around. :kookoo:

Aha! I figured it out.

It seems that according to search, the word 'forum' is not in your post.

However, the word 'forum.' is.

Seems to be a bug in the parsing of search terms, in that it includes the puncutation on words at the end of sentences. :yup:

I suspected as much, since a search of 'forum*' finds it. Thanks for confirming.

For the time being, unitl the bug gets fixed, I guess I should append an asterisk to all my search terms, even though that will sometimes return more results than I want. At least then I won't get as many false negatives. :)

Cripes, I've been using vbulletin searches for like three years now and I never noticed this bug until now. Makes me wonder just how many times I missed finding something that was really there?

Oh, and to Skeptoid - noone likes a smartass. Yer a nut, that was brilliant.

He didn't mention it, but it looks like Brian fixed this problem for us (as we requested) when he did the upgrade. I just thought to test it and it worked, and after I rebuilt the search index it even worked to find 'forum' where it previously found only 'forum.' :)
