Tonight I was at a big box discount store which shall not be named because I'm still furnishing a new apartment. And saw this bookcase on clearance. It's pretty ugly and I know it's a piece of laminated crap but I need the storage and figured I would stick it in a corner where I'll never have to look at it. And it was really, really cheap. So anyway I bought it and brought it home and unboxed it and got ready to put it together.

No hardware in the box. WTF.

The obvious thing is to take it back and get my money back, but that would involve boxing the whole thing back up again and making another trip back to this god awful store and trying to get some customer service. All of this seemed like a lot of trouble for such a POS piece of furniture and then I had this great idea: I'll just go to the hardware store and get some stuff to do it. Then I had an even BETTER idea: I'll just use things I already have to put it together!

So I got out my big jar of screws and nuts and bolts and started looking for pieces that were more or less the right size, and I found enough that were approximately in the right range. I had to drill a few holes a little larger, and a few that were too big a little deeper, but y'know, I thought this would be fine.

Now I'm like 2/3 done with it and I have busted this thing all to hell. I don't know why I ascribed the properties of wood to particle board, but this shit has no tolerance at all. One or four screws just, I dunno, 1/4" too big and it cracks in two. So now the structural shelves are busted to hell, but whatever, I'll just switch to nails and fill the gaping holes with Liquid Nails or Gorilla Glue.

This seemed like the proper thread.

Anyway, almost done. I'm not going to lie to you - this thing won't win any prizes - but I think it will hold some books. Might want to secure it to the wall though.
