I watched the Grammys last night, Green Day won a Grammy I'm not sure for the album "American Idiot" or for the song "American Idiot" and sang it. Just wondering what you Americans think of it, not everybody stood to applaud them, imagine that, but does it offend you or?
"American Idiot"
Don't wanna be an American idiot.
Don't want a nation under the new mania.
And can you hear the sound of hysteria?
The subliminal mind fuck America.
Welcome to a new kind of tension.
All across the alienation.
Everything isn't meant to be okay.
Television dreams of tomorrow.
We're not the ones who're meant to follow.
For that's enough to argue.
Well maybe I'm the faggot America.
I'm not a part of a redneck agenda.
Now everybody do the propaganda.
And sing along in the age of paranoia.
Welcome to a new kind of tension.
All across the alienation.
Everything isn't meant to be okay.
Television dreams of tomorrow.
We're not the ones who're meant to follow.
For that's enough to argue.
Don't wanna be an American idiot.
One nation controlled by the media.
Information age of hysteria.
It's calling out to idiot America.
Welcome to a new kind of tension.
All across the alienation.
Everything isn't meant to be okay.
Television dreams of tomorrow.
We're not the ones who're meant to follow.
For that's enough to argue.

I'm probably just too old or something, but I can hardly glean a coherent message from that song other than Americans watch too much TV (of course), you can't believe everything you read/hear (of course), and the anti-gay agenda sucks (good point).
Nevertheless, I might like it if I heard it.

I really like the song, and keep meaning to transpose (is that the right music term?) the hook and program it into my phone as a ring tone (if I can figure out how to do that).
I'm not offended by the song, because I don't think I'm so much the target (I sure hope not, anyway). I don't think they mean all Americans, but those who don't think, or question.

I'm a fan of that song, and most other Greenday songs (even though a few of them sound the same). The message is not much different than Bad Religion's "21st Century Digital Boy" or Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit" both of which are also awesome! :) Then again, I'm also a big fan of Triumph, the insult comic dog.

I like it too, though I'm not really a Greenday fan (before this, what had they done since Dookie?) Though like Ymir's Blood, I like "I walk alone" too, and I think they have a 3rd single off the album out as well that I've heard once.

The tune is good too (IMO, of course). I guess several songs on their new album are political.

Speaking of good music... I think the soundtrack for Garden State rocked. Plus it's just a damn fine movie which I think you'd really appreciate. If you haven't already seen it. :)
I like the song alot and agree with a lot of the lyrics. It had offended my husband until I explained it in an Orwellian context, then he was in agreement and no longer offended. He also has been offended by Boulevard Of Broken Dreams because he considers it an atheistic song. Yes, we are both a couple of those music geeks that argue and debate lyrics, trying to interpret them.
But I did not see the Grammys. I have trouble stomaching the show. I Suppose it would have been interesting to see the audience reaction to them winning. All I can say is that American Idiot came out during an election time, in this lovely politically heated and polarized nation of ours, people were offended by it but thankfully the radio stations blared it anyway. People saw it as an attack on Bush and the right wing in the same lines of Moore's F-911. So some people may have issues with the band and the song.

I like the song, and am not offended by it.
I don't think that the Grammys and "good music" necessarily go together, though. They often manage -- by accident, I'm sure -- to have at least one or two decent acts there, but I can't be bothered with most of the "talent" that's showcased on that show.
