It certainly can be, Julie, but I don't see it as a given. I suppose the difference is that I am universally joking when I call someone a retard or gay in that fashion. I would never use those labels in a serious way, actually saying and believing that they make the target less of a person. For myself, the very idea of calling someone gay or nigger or retard and actually meaning that it makes them subhuman or beneath me is patently absurd. I find it amusing to use the labels when joking precisely because of the absurdity, as do most of those I joke with. We use racial epithets occasionally, though most of us are of irish or scotish decent, so the epithets have much less of an impact with a modern crowd than saying nigger might. That doesn't make them any less insulting, really, when they are used seriously.

Pretty much what bey said. Although its a unnecessarily confrontational to use the term again just to make a point. A lot of us don't see it as a hate-word, just an insult, between-friends, ironic, or other, when applied to people who are clearly don't have any impairment. i.e. Its (usually faux-) pejorative nature is not premised on hatred of any actual group of people. There is no obvious historical subtext of institutionalised mistreatment based on bigotry. There's a fairly wide space between "fatty", "retard" and "nigger".

I've been called "anorexic" from time to time (because I'm tall and really skinny) and strangely enough have a bulemic friend who just assumed I was a rare male example of an anorexia or bullemia sufferer when we first were introduced. I stopped having a complex about it in my early twenties. Now I just laugh and try to come up with witty repostes on the rare occasion when someone does say it (usually just to stir the pot when there's a lull in conversation). I know no-one hates me for being skinny.

But if I was gay and someone venomously called me a "sick fag", or black and someone angrily called me a "nigger", I'd be pissed. Because there's clearly a difference in connotation. Neither would it concern me that my friend who has battled with bulemia might flinch at the term, if she is not present. If they're not saying "I hate you" by calling me "anorexic", they're not saying "I hate your anorexic/bulemic friend"
