Now, how do I get it? :P
I do not go to the gym, I used to have a membership, but never used it and it was a pain to drive there. I walk about a mile to six miles three to four times a week-power walking, I cannot jog although I can sprint run in a short distance. The last time I jogged, I started weezing and almost had an asthma attack; the other times, I nearly passed out from not getting enough oxygen and was left panting for about a half hour or so. I do yoga, but I don't think that is doing a whole lot besides shrinking my waist. Bathing suit season is coming up in a month or so and I'd like to have some tone so I can actually wear a suit this year. Any exercise tips?

Plastic surgery?
Hehe. No. Exercise. I just want to know what are the best ideas for a specific area.

Aqua fitness classes.
Been doing them 3-5 times a week for the last 6 months. (ok was slack over xmas, and had a eye thing last week or so, but next week straight back in)
Started because i broke my leg last year, good low to no impact exercise, great cardio and toning.
I got a great arse now, trust me it works.

Got any proof of that statement, like, say a color photo.

I do a combination of things, one hour on the treadmill going from 2.4 to 3.8 km/h. Walking is supposed to be one of the best exercises and from what I can tell, it works.
I'm a smoker so my exercising fell off on it's own in the past, but I find strength training and walking to work really well, walking is the closest thing to cardio I do.
I wear ankle weights now, do squats, side leg lifts which really work the side of the butt and thigh, do three other exercises specifically to target the glut.
One:
Stand on one leg, comfortably lean forward with both arms on the back of a chair, standing leg pretty much straight and ever so slightly bent and then making sure your shoulders and hips are in alignment with each other , lift your leg up to horizontal and then back down, kinda like when a figure skater does this, skate with her one leg perfectly perpendicular although in this case, you're holding your upper body higher be having your shoulders and arms facing forward resting on the back of the chair. Twelve singles, eight repetitions holding your leg up in the air for three counts, eight bringing your leg forward bent and then continuing up and back, and then another series of twelve. You might find out which side of your body is dominant on this exercise, for me, right leg, no problem, left leg, have trouble staying in alignment.
Another one specificially for the butt, to lift it up:
Lean in a kinda 45 degree angle against the arm of a couch, hips right against the arm level. Cross arms over your chest if you can, and then lower your upper body down and then pull it up again. However many reps you can handle but be sure you're not straining your back.
This exercise is a bit difficult because to really, really be effective with it, you need the right equipment. Some people lie face down on a workout bench, somehow hook their feet with their upper body hanging over the side and then do this and I've also seen cases where the gym had equipment where the bench that you lean on was at a 45 degree angle already.
I've tried to do this exercise on a coffee table and other places, I could do it, but it was precarious at best, settled for one of my three couches, the other two wouldn't work well for that exercise either.
Pelvic thrusts:
Lay on your back, knees bent and slightly apart and lift your pelvis up. While doing so, tighten your butt, as tight as you can, do several repetitions of it.
I've been doing this one for quite awhile, but even yesterday, I did fifteen just up and down, and then another fifteen while holding the position for a count of five, ohhhh, I feel it, it really works.
There's another simpler exercise:
Stand up, squeeze your cheeks together to a count of five. That's it, just do this for however many repetitions, do it while you're dong the dishes, it's so simple.
Anyways, some ideas. If you wish to try them and need a better explanation of how they work if you're not familiar with them already, or because my descriptions weren't clear enough feel free to ask for clarification so you don't hurt yourself. For instance, my pelvic thrusts I was doing slightly wrong, I think I just had my feet twisted outwards a bit though my knees were where they were supposed to be, but I ended up straining my inner knee and that bothered me for a few days.
FYI - I enjoy this video, "Kathy Smith - The Rules of Fat Burning," which has my upper body twenty minute strenght training exercises and my lower body twenty minute strength training exercises though I've extended the workout to include abs.
FYI - For every one pound of lean muscle tissue you build, it ends up burning fifty more calories a day, just by existing.
FYI - I always used to think that if I just got up and just pushed myself as hard as I could for as long as I could, that would be the most effective, and I'm meaning cardio exercises in this instance. My understanding is that that is false. You need to have your heartrate slightly elevated for over thirty-five minutes in order to start seriously burning so in the end you don't really need intense cardio, though I'm sure it has it's purposes and yes you probably will drop pounds like nothing if you got into an intense program of jogging for instance, but like I said, because I'm a smoker, these slower, lower, more particular exercises and the walking really have been effective for me and because they aren't quite so intense, I find myself more willing to do them and keep it up.

I love elliptical cyclers. They're great at toning your legs and butt, plus they're low intensity (I hate to jog just because I hate all the bouncing). Downside is that they're expensive to own, so you'd probably have to get yourself to a gym again. I hear ya that it's a pain to get to them; I haven't made it there yet since I moved and it's starting to show. :( My taxes are a mess this year and we withheld too much, so I've been looking into buying a cycler with my tax refund so I can work out at home.
Besides that, are there any stairs in your house? As a poor grad student that was usually what I did for a workout; just run the stairs at the local courthouse. Again, great for your legs and butt.

I highly recommend "donkey kicks".
Get on the floor on all fours. Pretend that there is something to your upper-rear to kick. Kick all the way up, contract the gluteal muscles for 5 seconds, and bring it back down.
Repeat 30 times on each side.

Beth,
I just wanted to share some thoughts with you. The only reason I got around to working out was because I put my spine/neck out of alignment back in October I think, September maybe, saw a chiropractor how many times, at least twelve visits to correct that problem. It got so bad I could hardly hold my head up, it wasn't in it's right place and I was using totally different muscles to hold it up which weren't used to it, so they were really weak and shaky for that purpose.
I think my posture started going downhill with breastfeeding, I never used a pillow and I never had particularily big breasts even breastfeeding so I had to stoop over a bit.
Anyways, weight loss is just a side-effect of rebuilding my posture so that I keep my spine straight, it bothers me on and off and building up my posture muscles is something I had to do which is why I started lifting weights which I never really ever considered doing before. Figured might as well do my lower body too since I'm doing the upper body work out.
The treadmill is directly related to that purpose too, strengthen the muscles that keep me upright, stomach muscles mostly so, now I just keep it up but I wasn't ashamed of the extra pounds I had on before though I'm proud of what I've accomplished, sounds paradoxical doesn't it?
In fact, I sat down beside my husband and said to him, well, you love me the way I am no matter what and I know it, you still want me, you still move me so I'm trying to figure out what is going to be my motivation if I don't need the exercise for the sake of my neck.
My motivation now is so that it will force me eventually to quit smoking. I like being in shape as opposed to not, I like being strong as opposed to being weak so that's my motivation, exercising reminds me how bad smoking is for me.
So hopefully soon, I'll bite the bullet and throw the damn things away.
My best friend is a heavy girl and there is no other friend I have with whom I feel completely free to be myself around, messy house, occasionally bratty kids, the clothes I wear around the house and all. She wants to be thinner and that's always good for the sake of health, she has troubles with her knees and so I'm glad for her but she goes to the beach in her bathing suit, I take her anywhere with me though she moved away and I miss having her around alot. I totally love to have her out on the beach with me, laughing, swimming, enjoying herself and her fearlessness is really beautiful to behold.
I hope you succeed in your goals but I hope you go to the beach in whatever you want to wear either way.
Anyways, so, I hope I can manage to disappear for awhile. I've been feeling like I've been fucking something up everyday, "it's been awhile since I've gone and fucked things up just like I always do,"* and I want to quit smoking, "it's been awhile since I could say, that I wasn't addicted and," and I want to be where I'm wanted, with my friends and family, "but all that shit seems to disappear when I'm with you." Quitting smoking makes me a bit spacy.
But, I'm glad to have met you Beth. I wish you luck and wish me luck on quitting smoking, only been battling the damned habit for eleven years, man time flies.

For your ass specifically, add some stair climbing and/or uphill stuff to your daily walk. And if yoga isn't toning up more than just your waist, you're not doing it right. Good luck, hon!

Well, it is elongating me, add it has whittled away alot of my hips, I used to have a very small waist and wide hips, but pudge in my hips are melting away, which I am happy about. My stomach is also getting flatter. There are some yoga exercises that would do well to target my behind, but I can no longer do them because of back injuries caused from car accidents and falling down iced stairs. Postures like the bow pose and fish posture are too straining on my lower back.
And thank you. The nearby park has a set of stairs leading up to the office. It is closed during the non-football season, so I may start running up and down them during baseball practice.

Or running, if your knees can take it.
Skating too, might be good. Be it on ice or inline ... it'll also benefit your legs!
