View Full Version : What's the point of 24/7 cover

when you get an email that says:
"Lees, can I do this at 10:30pm as I want to go get something to eat later before everyting closes at 11pm"
I asked them to reboot a server at 11pm. The request was made at 4:30 this afternoon and put in the 24/7 call group.
Now, I know it's only half an hour's difference but it's my neck on the line if people are working when the server is rebooted. So, now I'll stay up and reboot the fucking server.:glare:

Oh my god, it's half an hour. Let the fucking person eat!

OMG! There are places still open after 11pm and he works the fucking night shift so he knows the hours and knows that he will be asked to do things at certain times because it's a stupid firm where you have to beg, steal and borrow to get any downtime at all.
I work all fucking day without having lunch sometimes because I'm asked to so some WORK!
He's just replied to say that he will do it but it means he'll have to get his lunch from Tesco. Boo fucking hoo!
Oh, and he started working 2 hours ago, so it's not like he's starving.

And rightly so.
Meh! I'm more pissed off that I should be. We're going through a phase of management infighting as to which part of IT is the most important at the moment. And us plebs are getting caught in the middle.

Boo fucking hoo indeed! You can get some good shit at Tesco, it's a fucking grocery store for christ's sake.
Ask him if he can get me some Pepsi Max would ya? I'm thirsty.
Leesifer

Exactly slim.
Oh, and there are those new fangled microwave ovens at work that he can use to heat up stuff.
I've asked him not to heat up your pepsi max though.
Who am I kidding. I'm rebooting the server myself at 11pm. The situation at work is not worth me relying on somebody else at the moment.

Oh and I just got a generic email from our call logging software to say that the call I logged has been completed and closed.
So, he's closed the call before I even confirmed that everything is back up and running.
I know I sound so pedantic but that's the way things are at the moment, and he knows it.

Hey, why couldn't he have just stolen someone else's brought his own damn lunch, anyway?

Did you do the simple thing and let him know that it needed to be 11pm since 10:30 has too much risk involved?
Also, I assume you were going to publicize the outage in some way to ensure 11 was fine.
I make off hour requests all the time, and I don't mind if people counter. And if it's flexible than I wouldn't have an issue with a slight counter. And if it isn't flexible, then the simple response to that email would have been:
"Due to existing circumstances this reboot actually needs to occur at 11 pm. If you're not able to reboot the server at 11pm let me know and I will make arrangements to have someone else reboot the server at the requested time.
Thanks,
Lees"
You want to do something like that so that you have it in writing from them that they're not able to perform their job. But I wouldn't have an issue with a simple request for a different time. We all do stuff at odd hours and I do try to accommodate people where it doesn't compromise the mission.
On Monday I have three servers that are being replaced. I run the application, web and database teams at my company, not the server/network team. But I was more then happy to have them do the update at 10pm instead of the 6:30pm I requested because there's no extra risk involved, and if it fits better for the people doing the work so be it. But if it needed to be done at 6:30 I assure you I'd make them do it at 6:30.
Tesco lunches are teh yumm  I like their chichen tikka wraps and their roasted peppers/feta sammiches :hungry:
What is the problem with eating Tesco?

Look here you bite size bint, maybe he's tired of eating fucking Tesco. It's the middle of the goddamn night and he wants to pretend he has some choice in his sad, pathetic, lonely sun-free life. So why don't you ease up you fapping cunt before you're faced with unexplainable db errors. :glare:

I don't think so, Smilin. There's enough thrusting round here without adding skunkiness to the mix.

So, just on the general theme of 24/7 cover and being on call.
I signed out of chat at 11pm tonight to feed and then go to bed. I wish!
I've been on the phone and logged into work ever since because a server in Paris decided to be a complete bastard and ONE person in London needed to access a document on that server. The actual frenchy types are sensibly at home or out clubbing.

Can't you set up cron (or similar) to automate the reboot?

I used the Windows remote boot command but it took ages - there's obviously a problem with the servers but that can wait until Monday now they are back up and running.
Oh and I just got a generic email from our call logging software to say that the call I logged has been completed and closed.

Happens everywhere, Lees. :sigh: "Call closure" is a pointless concept.
