Oooooo! Aaaaaaah! (http://www.mapofspringfield.com/index.html) :madlove:
Don't forget to open the big map (http://www.mapofspringfield.com/spring_map.png), even if you browse using the quadrant map (http://www.mapofspringfield.com/map/index.html). I'm taking it to Kinkos and getting it printed out, laminated, and possibly framed.

I could use a lot of time looking at that big map.
But I don't see how a 'quadrant' map can have nine sections. :chin:

I'm going to have to poke you with a stick now, cep. I hope you understand. :poke:

It can't, of course. The proper term when speaking of a rectangular piece of land (especially as represented on a map) is quadrat. However, the terms "quadrant" and "quadrat" are frequently mistaken for each other, in my experience, even by people who should know better.
Because a rectangular piece of land is a quadrat, this is why large maps that have been broken down into smaller rectangular sections are called "quad maps."

Michael

Wow! Now I can follow Homer et al around their community. Good one. Now I can follow the stories and be there before he is. :woohoo: I can take the shortest routes. This is amazing. Have you got the one for Shelbyville?

Is that legal? I mean, will Kinko's do that? I could maybe, but copyright infringement would be a problem.

Surely even Kinkos can see that my private droolery is fair use by any standard. If not, consider yourself hired, young lady.

It's kind of a tricky issue. The guys who designed the map apparently don't mind if you print it out -- they encourage you to do so right there on the website. If Kinko's balks at letting you print it out, you could just point 'em to the website.
On the other hand, Fox hasn't given permission for the map to be made in the first place, much less printed out. Still, my impression is that it's unlikely to be a problem so long as you're not planning to sell it. I've copied copyrighted material at Kinko's and other such places for my personal use on numerous occasions, and never had anyone so much as bat an eye.
If Kinko's does refuse to print it out for you, you could probable print it yourself if you have a decent printer or access to one. Kinkos can't possibly object to laminating something for you simply because it happens to be copyrighted material.
Cheers,
Michael

Good points all, Michael. I would have already printed it off my friendly neighborhood work color printer, but I'd rather go to the pros because I'd like it to be huge. Maybe the guys in the production area could help me out with at least a nice 11x17 job.

If all else fails, you could print out the individual quadrats and then carefully tape 'em together. It's an inelegant solution, to be sure, but I've printed out some whopping big things on my home printer by cutting the picture into sections and printing it one section at a time.
Another thought: any local university will almost certainly have a print shop and printers capable of printing poster-sized pictures.

Michael

It came out pretty good at 24" x (approx) 16". The text is a bit blurry/jaggy but very readable.

Looks good!
I'd bet that if anyone's concerned about a little blurriness, dropping the image into Photoshop or a similar program and then fiddling around with the "Enhance Contrast" and "Sharpen" filters would fix it right up.
Cheers,
Michael

Not really. It's got the "jaggies", which happens to text for a number of reasons, including being blown up in size. Increasing the contract might also throw the rest of it out of whack. I don't think there's much to be done for it, but its not that bad, and is most definitely readable.
Hubby spent about an hour with it this morning and had a great time. :yup:

I don't think there's much to be done for it, but its not that bad, and is most definitely readable. Main problem is that the resolution of print is just so vastly better than that of a computer monitor, pixellation can't be avoided unless you use absolutely enormous images or render the text seperately.
Sweet! Too bad I'll still never be able to get Mr. Burns to the hopspital, 'cause I'm too dumb to read a map!

Done. The play between the obvious meaning and a recluse being a type of spider was too fun to resist.

Excellent. Now how about doing the same to your custom title? Not that you aren't a member too, mind you, but it just doesn't have the same charm.

Back on topic, does anyone actually live anywhere in Springfield? I'm having a hell of a time locating any residential areas outside Pressboard Estates and the various wealthy areas.

I don't think everything in Springfield is on the map. Only the stuff relevant to the show.

A friend of mine has an offical Star Trek atlas. It has huge, poster-quality color maps of the four quadrants, plus special pages about wormholes and the neutral zone and a few other awesome things. It is to DIE for!
Edit: And here it is! Good price, too.

Fortunately, I have no credit card, or I would be in deep, deep trouble now. Even though it wouldn't help me with my RPG reference thread, I STILL want it, and I WANT IT NOW!

I had the oddest experience today, which I feel certain was entirely coincidental and had nothing to do with anyone here. :rolleye2:
I answered a knock on my door to discover my UPS man, who had a package for me from Amazon books. Since I had ordered nothing and today is neither Christmas nor my birthday, I was both surprized and intrigued.
Inside I found a beautifully gift wrapped flat, rectangular object. Anxious to discover who had sent me this gift, I opened the gift card to find...nothing. The card was blank.
Can you guess what was in the package? I'll bet you can! Can you guess who sent it to me? Do inquiring minds want to know? I'll bet they do!
