Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas
Have yourself a merry little Christmas,
Let your heart be light.
Next year,
All our troubles will be out of sight.
Have yourself a merry little Christmas,
Make the Yuletide gay.
Next year,
All our troubles will be miles away.
Once again as in olden days,
Happy golden days of yore.
Faithful friends who were near to us,
Will be dear to us once more.
Someday soon we all will be together,
If the Fates allow.
Until then, we'll have to muddle through somehow.
So, have yourself A merry little Christmas now.

Yes, the melody always was, and the lyrics in the Garland version were changed.

I love this musical and I love this song. Hmm... I might have to put the Meet Me in St. Louis DVD on next year's Christmas list. :chin:

Ya, and the lyrics they changed were pretty scary. If they'd kept the original lyrics, even though they made sense in the context of the story, this song would never have become a Christmas standard.
Have yourself a merry little Christmas
Let your heart be light.
Next year,
All our troubles will be out of sight."
Have yourself a merry little Christmas
It may be your last
Next year we may all be living in the past"

Here we are as in olden days,
Happy golden days of yore.
Faithful friends who are dear to us
Gather near to us once more.
Here we are as in olden days,
Happy golden days of yore
Faithful friends who are dear to us
Slit their throats and they'll be no more.

Well, Golly. That's odd. I was taught completely different lyrics to this verse, I suppose because Mother was so fond of animals?
Gone are Santa's golden days,
Happy golden days of yore,
And reindeer once who were dear to him
Are lying near to him in the snow.
She's the one who encouraged me to take up taxiderm--Yes, Mother! I'm coming, Mother!
MOTHER! WHAT HAVE YOU DONE?!
