I've been thinking of getting a PSP for a couple of RPGs. However, I'm confused. I want the "best" model for playing video games. (I don't care about "media", just games.) The 3000 screen is way better. Also, the 3000 screen is way worse.

Anyone here used either the 2000 or 3000 and able to comment?

(The secondary issue is that the 3000 apparently doesn't exist as a standalone yet, because Sony's making it a bundle-only deal.)

I dunno.

I have a PSP, and I regret buying it, for the most part. I bought it in 2005, and it was working a couple months ago, but now it won't even turn on. I think maybe it's the battery? It doesn't have that many games tho, and it's not going to be gaining that much 3rd party support in the future. But they can port great PS2 games to it on the cheap, so that's nice. You can also play (downloaded) games off your PS3 on it through some internet service.

The PSP does have good graphics and a very nice looking screen, and the little nub that acts as a joystick was a good idea.

But nevertheless, if you want a portable gaming system, you should get a DS, imho. Sure, the graphics aren't as good. But it has many more games in general, it has a lot of good games, including quality RPGs, it's cheaper and it has much better battery life, you can play many games multiplayer with only one cartridge, and it's probably considerably more durable (Nintendo generally makes good products in that regard, but DS is also cartridge based which increases the durability quite a bit too), and it also can play any of the dozens of quality Game Boy Advance games out there.

It also has some quality applications out there that aren't exactly video games - educational stuff, cooking guide, sudoku and crossword puzzle games, etc.

But that's just my opinion, if there's an RPG that you really really want, I can understand that. But I'd say the DS is a much better buy for your money.

To clarify: I have a DS. I have no plans to use the PSP as a portable. It's ridiculous.

I did go get a PSP, though. After researching it more, I decided to go with the 3000, and overall I'm pretty happy with that; I don't notice the interlacing effect.

I'm not getting it because I think it's viable competition for the DS; it's simply not. But it has a few specific games that I really want to play.

Having messed with the PSP for a while:
1. I now understand why PSP owners are so pissed that the DS is winning. The PSP's graphics are beautiful, the sound's quite nice, and the system is sleek, beautiful, and sexy.
2. I also now understand why the DS is winning. You close the lid, throw it in a bag, and you're done. Hard objects in the bag? No problem. Load times? No, no load times. Entering your WEP password? Cake on the DS, tedious pain on the PSP.

The PSP is a mediocre effort at best when it comes to portable gaming -- at least compared to the DS. (Even the Advance SP appeals to me more, honestly.) But... It has games that I don't have available on the DS, even if not that many, and I like the idea.

So, yeah, I totally agree -- the DS is a much better deal. But there will come a day when I'm sick as a dog and all I want to do is lie in bed playing Final Fantasy II (I got the collection of 20ish Genesis games for the PSP) or Final Fantasy Tactics. And for that, the PSP has a place.

Yeah, it does have a really nice screen and good graphics...

I just, in retrospect, don't think it has enough games that I like for me to feel that I should really have bought it. I need to find out about fixing it tho...

And hell no am I buying any movies for it. Waste. of. money.

I suppose the ability to copy media files to it for playback is sorta neat. There's some commercial packages to let you rip DVDs to files which you can then copy to the memory stick. Okay, I guess that's sorta neat. But it seems like a pretty expensive toy for that, and honestly I'd rather have a 10" DVD player with a decent screen for $10 more.

Yeah the bittorrents are full of movies you can play on it.

I keep thinking about the PSP, but I think I made the right choice with my DS. The PSP is prettier, more powerful, can play movies etc. But the DS is fun and nice.

Kinda ironic about that being a selling point, Ensign Steve, considering Sony's wails about people downloading PSP games from the bit-torrents.

Unless you were speaking of those many high quality movies licenced under Creative Commons or similar? :innocent:

That's not irony. That's piracy! :pirate:

Those things aren't mutually exclusive...
