I'm going to ask vm/livius/somebody to make a sticky :hearye: out of this thread.

:infant::oneyear: It's already Jan 2 :time: :twiddle: and I can't wait any longer. :eager:

I'm establishing my benchmark :drawline: for the start of the year, and it's considerably lower than last year's start. :cheer: It's also considerably higher than my eventual end mark. :hmmm:

So, to work! :workcomp:   :showoff: :tread:

and play! :catch: :tennis: :swings: :bike:

I have no idea what I said last year, but I quit the gym when I moved in June and now have to find a routine that works.

My goal, to fit in my old pants again.

I'm hoping to find a belly dancing class and start running when the weather is amenable.

Yays! :excited: Thank you, maddog, and :gooduse:

I'll be getting back on the :tread: next week, unless, of course, I have :snowflake: to shovel which is more than enough exercise.

I've been shoveling what seems like every day for over a week now and today I vacuumed the entire upstairs, every nook and cranny which must have been a good workout because I worked up a sweat doing it. Tomorrow, I'll be tackling the bathroom and cleaning out the adjacent :laundry: room so that we can change the dryer out, so I'll be getting my exercise in that way tomorrow. :chain:

I am working on my 1000 mile journey, like I did a couple of years ago. This time, I am not splitting it up into bike v. foot miles. Maybe that means I will stay in this thread for more than a month. Argg.

But I kind of have to do something, since I can't afford new clothes and . . .um my old clothes don't really fit anymore. So, yeah.

I invite any one who notices my absence from this thread to please pm me and nag/encourage me to come back.

I just want to continue on the same track I have been. I have about 6 more lbs to lose until I hit my goal weight, which would be about 82 lbs lost total. I hope to hit that before we go to Jamaica which shouldn't be difficult at all.

I also want to continue to improve my running - speed and distance. In October there will be a 5K in honor of the son of a family friend that was murdered a few months ago. I'd really like to run it and honor his memory.

Swimmer and I have taken on working out at the YMCA....yeah, godfry wandering around the Y...we each got on the program (her two months before me...typical). We started before France and have been going at least twice a week. I dropped 15 pounds in France, thanks to the virus, but since I've been home and well, I've dropped another 15 pounds doing walkies (started at 1 mile a visit, now up to 2 miles a visit) and weights (every other time). I'm eating better, too.

My current weight: 215#.

Short-term Objective: Under 200#.

Longer-term Objective: 180#.

Also...I just became insulin-dependent. I'm injecting insulin every evening. I'll need to be more careful. Taking the diabetic education program will take all my deductible this coming year, as it's beyond that threshold.

So...Interested in any company on your thousand mile journey?

Does your doctor have you on an ADA-compliant (i.e., low-fat, high-carb diet)? If so, you might want to save your money on the education program and buy a couple of books that will prove much more useful in the long term: Dr. Bernstein's Diabetes Solution: The Complete Guide to Achieving Normal Blood Sugars, by Richard K. Bernstein (http://www.amazon.com/Dr-Bernsteins-Diabetes-Solution-Achieving/dp/0316167169/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1231020651&sr=8-1), and Think Like a Pancreas: A Practical Guide to Managing Diabetes with Insulin, by Gary Scheiner and Barry Goldstein (http://www.amazon.com/Think-Like-Pancreas-Practical-Managing/dp/1569244367/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1231020784&sr=1-1).

I am merely prediabetic (diagnosed with fasting blood glucose levels of 127 and 123 on two successive visits to the lab), but have had good success in keeping my blood glucose levels down by low-carbing it. I've lost 65 pounds since my diagnosis, as well--from 220 to 155, and have maintained at 155 for a couple of months now, eating what sometimes seems to be an inordinate amount of food.

Another useful book, if you're looking for basic information, is Gretchen Becker's The First Year: Type 2 Diabetes: An Essential Guide for the Newly Diagnosed (http://www.amazon.com/First-Year-Diabetes-Essential-Diagnosed/dp/1569242658/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1231021078&sr=1-1).

I did the first 30 minutes of a Firm tape yesterday until I got completely bored with it. Those things are an hour long! Jeez, they could at least have better music.

This morning I ran 30 minutes on the elliptical, because the treadmill was occupied. I liked it! I might try it again. The machine said I burned 400 calories, which I really sort of doubt.

Tonight after work I plan on doing my own little 30 minute strength-training thing I do, which is just doing like squats and bicep curls and stuff in front of the tv.

I almost didn't do it, because I was already wicked sore, but I did it anyway. Also I did some really good stretches (which I hadn't been doing, gee I wonder why I was sore) and damn I am out of shape. Tomorrow I'll take a day off of strength training and just do 30 minutes of cardio, probably on the elliptical again. And I'll remember to stretch this time.*

I haven't done any of the Biggest Loser ones (although I think I might have one on my computer). Who does it? Jillian and Bob?

I did 30 minutes on the elliptical again. I felt like I didn't have as much energy as yesterday, but I still definitely worked up a sweat.

I don't know what I'm going to do tomorrow. I have a birthday party after work. The food part will be easy, because it's sushi (just need to stay away from the tempura), but I won't have much time to work out. I think I'll just commit to 20 minutes of upper body strength training.

997 Miles Remaining.

I went to the Y and walked/jogged on the treadmill. Four miles was my goal, but I used up my 30 minutes as the rush hour approached and there was a line, so I only got in 2 miles on the interval program. 2 is better than 0, though, so I am ok with that. And I feel really good and refreshed, which I forget about when I'm not exercising.

Also, all the non-free weight machines have disappeared. You know, the ones I know how to use. I guess I will ask after them next time I go, which I hope will be tomorrow morning.

Ensign Steve
01-07-2009, 10:41 PM
I did 30 minutes on the treadmill, alternating between walking and running, more running than walking, because there was someone else in the gym ;). I didn't have time to do any strength training, so I think I'll do arms and abs tonight, which I didn't do last night. I did notice while I was running toward the mirror for half an hour that my shoulders have a little bit of definition already, or it's just been so long since I've been in a tank top that I forgot how they looked.

I did a half hour of free step on Wii Fit. You can set the pace but I set it the fastest it would go and it was still too slow. I ended up doing over 1,000 steps over the goal. I thought about doing Boot Camp too but I'm kinda of tired from running around work so I think that will wait.

Crumb
01-07-2009, 11:50 PM
I don't like the step or the rhythm boxing because it goes too slow, and it tells me to slow down to do better. But I don't want to slow down I want to get a better workout by going faster! :dopey:

biochemgirl

biochemgirl
01-08-2009, 12:07 AM
Do you mean the stepping to the side or the turned step with the purple feet? The side stepping took me awhile but I finally got the hang of it. I just have to make sure I get in the rythm and stick with it. Although I hate the pausing thing when you miss steps because I do trip all over myself then.

Crumb
01-08-2009, 12:40 AM
The purple feet.

biochemgirl
01-08-2009, 12:46 AM
Those tricky purple feet!

I discovered that I was getting thrown off because I wasn't stepping fully with the last foot onto the board. Therefore it wasn't counting that as a step and it kept pausing. Once I started making sure I stepped down completely it helped. It is a little tricky being the balance board isn't that wide the way you're stepping on it when you turn sideways. Those Miis make it look so easy. :shakefist:

SharonDee
01-08-2009, 01:03 AM
Oh good, I'm not the only one frustrated with the Wii step routines. The beginner's is way too slow and the advanced (is it?) is much better but ends too soon. And I can't see what I'm doing differently when it registers "OK" rather than "Perfect". And I agree that the free step just ain't fast enough. Bah!

It's only a game ... it's only a game ... it's only a game ...

In other news, Exercise TV on On Demand is pretty neat. I don't know if it's always been available to me but I'm happy to see it there now. Most of that stuff is geared toward younger folks, though, because they expect this old ass to jump up and down. Ain't happenin'; it's low impact or nothing my find young fiends friends.

I got in 35 minutes on the bike this evening, watching "Easy Rider." Yesterday I was in LA, so had to make do with a short walk at lunch and a 15 min. walk from the office to my meeting last night. Some of it was uphill, though, so that helped.

I did 20 minutes on the treadmill. I wanted to do 30, but the entire time I was on there I was bored and cranky and had no energy. At 20 minutes I'd had enough. I think I know what my problem is, but I'll spare the men.

Yesterday I was intending to get up at 4:30 am to get a workout in before work since I was headed to my parents for the weekend. That didn't happen. However, one of my coworkers was checking the weather and saw it would be a little icy so he told me to go home early (:aww: he's such a nice guy) and I was able to get a treadclimber session in at their house. I need to get back on track. I went a few days between Wii Fit workouts and accepted its scolding about it on Saturday. But when I started Sunday's workout it said something like, "It's Sunday. Wouldn't you like to take a day off?" Hey, don't look at what day of the week it is. Look at how many consecutive workout days I've had in the last seven.

Balancing is so good for your core. Especially certain muscles that you can't get to any other way, like those ones that attach to your bottom rib. Please stop me if I'm getting too technical. But seriously, you are going to feel that one I promise.

I know, right! Why can't it be winter break all year round?

I just finished doing 30 minutes on the elliptical, because now both treadmills are broken. :brooding: I traveled 2.65 miles and burned 397 calories, if the machine is to be believed. Then I did 20 minutes of upper body and abs, followed by a good stretch. Time to take the rest of the day off. :qwoot:

The YMCA across the street from work was having a promotion today--join, and they waive the $100 joining fee. I signed up. I figure that I will be able to get in some exercise at lunch sometimes, or before going home in the evening, and will have access to weight training.

I have belonged to a gym before (24-Hour Fitness-paid for three years, but didn't use it at all enough to make it worth the cost--although my kids used it more often); we'll see this time if I can get into the habit. I popped for $6 extra per month to have a dedicated locker, and expect that to help--I won't have to schlep my workout stuff back and forth. Also, this is a monthly membership; I can quit on 15 days' notice if it turns out I'm not making use of the facilities.

This evening I checked my gym supplies--shoes, socks, T-shirts, exercise shorts, etc.--and I have everything I need to get started.

I've been doing the Wii Fit for at least 30 minutes most days--missed three days over the holiday weekend while I was at my parents' house--but I haven't felt like counting it here. It really does feel more like play than work.

But what keeps me on the balance board so regularly is not that I'm so concerned about getting fit. It's all about getting warm. When I get a chill I can't shake--stupid French doors!--all I have to do is fire up the Wii and exercise. Voila! Instant heat.

Hope you're not suffering much by way of a hangover, biochemgirl!

There was one vegetarian spring roll left after dinner last night, so I decided to risk it (16 grams of carbs--of which only one is fiber--most of it in the form of the white flour used to make the wrapping. In less than an hour, my blood glucose had gone up to a level I don't like to see, so I jumped on my stationary bike and rode that sucker hard for 45 minutes--until the sweat was literally pouring off me (and stinging my eyes) and soaking the handlebars.

It worked. Took my BG down 30 points, and I woke up this morning with a "normal" fasting BG. ("Normal", in quotes, because it's the average fasting blood sugar of nondiabetic folks who don't have to watch what they eat--I have to work at it.)

If you only need to lose 5.6 pounds, you really don't need to.

As one (slender, fit) older fellow with whom I play hockey told me, when explaining why he's never been fazed by the teasing of his kids about his daily use of a weigh scale:

"It's easier to lose 2 pounds than to lose 20."

Sometimes you need to lose 5 pounds (but not 10 or 15, say). If 5 pounds didn't really matter, then no number of 5-pound increments would, either.

That's a really good point though. Since I'm actively losing right now I don't weigh myself every day so as to not drive myself crazy. Once I get to the maintenance stage I will though. It's easier to keep yourself in check that way.

Eventually, you'll want to ditch the treadmill and do some "real" running, where the 'ground' doesn't help move your feet for you.

Actually, I just started on the treadmill this past weekend. I still hate the damned thing, but I just don't quite have the motivation to go run outside in sub-freezing temperatures. When I was younger and in good shape, snow and cold temps wouldn't have stopped me. Come the spring and warmer temps, I'll be back outside to run, even if it's just up to the local high school to use their track.

Wednesday night, we had dinner with some friends from out of town. I was able to sneak in a half hour on the treadmill at the Y before meeting them.

Thursday, I got up at 5:15 to catch the train to LA, and didn't get back home until 2:30 Friday morning--our train had to "rescue" another train that had been in an accident. I took only a short walk at lunch on Thursday, but did walk up four flights of stairs carrying about 40 pounds of assorted books and papers.

Today, I was functioning on only 4 hours of sleep--went to bed right after dinner tonight, at 7:30, so no bike ride. (I woke up at little after 11, and am doing a little light Web surfing before going back to bed.) I'll get back into my routine on the morrow.

(1). It didn't start raining until I'd gotten there.

(2). I learned that I need to wear socks if I'm going to wear these shoes to walk any distance-I rubbed the skin off the knuckle of each big toe. BUT--since I did it walking to the 99-cent store, I was able to buy socks--and some bandaids--for cheap, right there.

I had some time between lunch and a mid-afternoon partnership meeting today, so I went over to the gym and put in half an hour on a "Cardio" program on the treadmill--and I fooled it: I told it I was 30 years old, so it would maintain my heartrate at 150+, instead of the wimpy 131 it wants to max me out at when I tell it how hold I really am.

Well...I've been pretty out of the loop, with my exerbuddy being swamped with school things and then I threw my back out.

I finally got to the chiroquackster and got that all unkinked, gave it a day of rest, and then plunged into three days of heavy gardening. At least twelve hours on Saturday and then, awakening sore and stiff, I was expecting a massage. But since other school work had overwhelmed her, I never got the massage and the sun came out about noon each day. I worked out muscles I haven't been working in my regular weights workouts....

I've managed to get my blood sugars down to where they are supposed to be. The trick? Exercise. The garden work did it for me. Now I'll see what happens when I don't get exercise during the week.

So...No more miles, but down three pounds from the last time at the gym.

I did 18.5 minutes at 3.4 mph on the treadmill at home, or a little over a mile. Our treadmill has a heart rate monitor. About 2 minutes into the session, my heart rate was about 150 but it settled down to 120-130. Is that good for a 300 pound man who hasn't exercised in years?

Dingfod
03-01-2009, 10:32 PM

I ended up doing 1.15 miles in 25 mins 30 secs, a 2.7 mph pace on average. I'm a little sore now, and my left (broken) ankle is talking to me a bit (nothing a little Ibuprofen can't take care of), but otherwise, I feel good.

Today we ran 8 200-meter timed intervals.

My times were: 59 sec, 60 sec, 61 sec, 60 sec, 61 sec, 60 sec, 57 sec and 53 sec. 53 sec is my fastest time ever, iirc, for this exercise, and I did it on the last one.

I was very surprised at the 59 first interval, as it seemed fairly comfortable and relaxed for me, and is among my faster times. Yesterday I felt weak and icky and totally out of breath on the wilderness park trail. I wasn't at all sure I'd do as well as this. I was even more surprised by the final 2 intervals, but evidently my trainer knows what he is talking about -- he told me to use my arms more at the start and THEN relax while running. I guess it made a difference. :dogrun:

That 2 1/2 hour hike with my brother-in-law turned into 5 hours (10.5 miles). The first (and last) 2 miles were fine--mostly through a nature reserve and up to Lake Poway. The middle 6.4 were The Mt. Woodson Trail (http://www.localhikes.com/Hikes/MtWoodsen_7320.asp). Description: Highlights:
form Lake Poway through canyon to Mt Woodson and breathtaking vistas
Near: Poway, CA
Scenery: [four stars]
Distance: 6.4 miles round trip
Elevation Gain: 2000 ft
Hike Time: 5 hours
Difficulty: Strenuous
Trail Condition: OK, but a few difficult spots
HikeType: Out and Back

So I've been doing my 30-45 minutes a day on a stationary bike or a treadmill--not quite training for this--but I did it! Next weekend, I think I'll stick with the less strenuous portion. Don't want to kill any of my friends.

Do you have a water bottle that you can carry with you? I've started bringing mine to work and filling it from our water cooler. It makes it much easier not to walk out to the vending machine.

Also, I think it's highly unlikely one would get sick from ones own germs as long as the bottle is rinsed well and not shared by others.

Sorry, did.nt mean too butt into your bizz,The plasic does braek down and mold spores can attach is all I meant.you know what your doing.

Didn't exercise last Friday. Got done with stuff too late in the evening. Took a group on a 5.7-mile hike around Lake Poway on Saturday. Rode my exercise bike for half an hour after my birthday party yesterday.

I got my aerobics and workout in last night which was good in two ways, I got my workout done like I wanted to and it helped dispel a lot of the anger I had inside of me after an argument. :airbox:

The argument gave me one helluva cardio workout though, lemme tell you. :rawr:

My brisk paced, 15 minute walk at break today paid off in more than one way. :yup2:

I found :dollah:5 on the sidewalk. :rich:

I didn't really gain much weight over vacation, we were so active. Now with the :baby: news it obviously changes things a bit. I still plan on exercising and staying as active as I can for as long as I can. We'll see how that works out.

I have to second Ding on the Propel and similar fitness waters. Nothing but additives that you don't need. The best drink is still water.

Baby news! What did I miss?! :dotell:

I did my 15 min brisk walk yesterday at break and a 20 min, partially uphill mile during my lunch break. :sprint:

Didn't exercise last night--got in too late. Did 30 minutes on the bike tonight, watching an educational video about the Divine Comedy.

Last night I worked on breaking up and dispersing the snow mountain behind my house where the :sun: doesn't shine. A good cardio and weight bearing workout for me and fun for the :dog:s. :snowflake:

Just got back from my 15 min fast walk at break and I think I might be a little more awake now. It's still a little chilly out but it's :sun: and no where near as cold as it's been. :=)
