I've been contemplating starting a new Deadwood Mafia, only this time I'd fix the hoople beating problem which turned out to be a bit of a game-breaker in the first game (http://www.freethought-forum.com/forum/showthread.php?t=9687). If enough people are interested, I'm thinking we could up the complexity with new roles, maybe even two competing mafia families: Swearengen v. Tolliver, say.

Some hoople heads got to beat people up at night which helped the town figure out who the bad guys were.

Okay, you know how in vanilla mafia games the cop has a chance to view one person a night to find out what their role is? For the Deadwood theme, we made the cop Sheriff Bullock, and instead of just asking to view, he beat a confession out of a suspect.

In order to mask said Sheriff beatings, I gave some hooples the option to beat up one person a night just for shits and giggles. The problem there was that once a beating hoople was strung up, we started running out of beaters.

So I gave other folks the chance to beat up hooples, but that gave the players a chance to prove themselves hooples by arranging during the day who they were going to beat. The next day they came back and confirmed who was beaten, thereby confirming each other's credentials as innocents and gloriously defeating the Pinkertons.

The game was going solidly in the town's direction anyway on account of some stellar sheriffing by Bullock and, once he was killed, Utter, so I think they would have won anyway either that day or the next, but still.

For people who haven't watched the series yet (Lees, you ho), I've decided the game plot will follow the general dynamics of the first season. That way y'all can easily hit Wikipedia or maybe watch a couple of episodes to get into the theme.

If we get th1nk3rs idea off the ground and have more people to play with, I'll do the more complicated Deadwood I mentioned in the OP.

Townies are not completely deprived of power. They hold two pretty potent weapons – their vote and their brain. Obviously, the “best” Townie is the one who manages to trick the Mafia through his posts, tearing through their lies with spears of pure logic and ultimately emerging triumphant with their bodies hanging limply from their respective nooses. How many people do you know who can accomplish that? Seriously, as Townies, you are usually completely deprived of information. Everything you know, you know from other people’s posts. Those people might be lying, wrong themselves, or misinterpreting information they’ve been given. However, every Townie should be capable of doing something much more simple – not getting in the way.
