Okay, everybody likes to talk about how the original series is the best Star Trek series. Well, I'm finally getting around to watching season one, and here's the thread where I listen to myself talk about it. Feel free to chime in.
I totally thought Mudd's Women (http://www.startrek.com/startrek/view/series/TOS/episode/68668.html) were andriods. What was I on?! Is that a later episode? The next episode, What Are Little Girls Made Of? (http://www.startrek.com/startrek/view/series/TOS/episode/68680.html) (a silly title if you ask me, as only one of the five androids was female), has androids, but it's still not the episode I was thinking of. I remember Kirk walking into a room with a whole bunch of half-finished female androids lying on tables, and I swear Mudd was there. Am I trippin'?

I remember androids as well.
But I hunted around that website you link above and found the I, Mudd (http://www.startrek.com/startrek/view/series/TOS/episode/68742.html) episode in Season Two that looks to be the one I had in mind.
Nice little reference to Asimov's I, Robot in the title of that episode.

Eureka! You have found it! I didn't venture past season one on the website, because that's the only DVD set I own. Duh, me! (PS: I'm pretty sure it's a reference to I, Borg on TNG, though. Temporal paradox or something... yeah.)
I'm learning a lot from this web site. Not that this is the first time I've visted it by any means, but it is the first time I've delved so deeply into TOS. My favorites are the promotions. Yeoman Janice Rand became CPO Rand in time for the first motion picture, and was a Commander in time for The Voyage Home. Go Janice! Also, Nurse Chapel was a doctor in time for the feature films. These are some motivated women! And I got confirmation on Majel Barrett's having portrayed "Number One" for The Cage. NEAT STUFF!
I'm torn between watching the show and poking around on the site. Looks like I've got the motion pictures to watch while I'm at it. Last time I watched The Wrath of Kahn, I fell asleep, and last time I watched The Undiscovered Country, I was completely hammered (damn you, beer trek!).

The biggest thing to remember about TOS is that it had to operate on a small budget. However like several other low budget sci fi (Doctor Who being a good example) it suceeds, not despite this, but in many ways because of it. The writers couldn't just fall into the more modern trap of relying on special effects to carry an episode.
My favorite thing about the show was that it managed to include a lot of good messages on racism and culture without being overly preachy. (Excepting Kirk's soliquies on the inherent nobility of mankind, of course.) I also have to admit an inherent 'cool' factor, though that may be due to having grown up watching it. The 'fight theme' is just classic. I almost died when Futurama used it as the national anthem of Dr. Zoidberg's planet.
My favorite episodes were I, Mudd; The Devil in the Dark; and Balance of Terror. Any of the appearance of the sneaky original Klingons are good as well.
Least favorite episodes would be And the Children Shall Lead; Specter of the Gun.
Mudd was a cool character, as was the similar trader who appeared in Trouble With Tribbles.

Nice little reference to Asimov's I, Robot in the title of that episode.
The writers for TOS were a literate bunch, and I wouldn't be at all surprised if "I, Mudd" was intended as a nod to I, Robot. I'm guessing that it was at least as much a nod to Robert Graves' I, Claudius though.

Oh please, for the love of humanity, no! They're simply awful!
Speaking of Star Trek-related music, there was a terrific TOS-related song called "He's Scotty" that one of the local radio stations put out when I was in college. It was sung to the tune of Victoria Beckham's "Venus," and included voice clips. I called the local radio station and tried to get a copy of it, but they wouldn't cooperate. Dang! If, by any chance, anyone knows of it and where I could get a copy, I'd be ever so grateful. Heck, I still remember all the words!
He's Scotty
He works on the Enterprise [Scotty: "Engineer Scott here."]
Engineering is his game. [Scotty: "Main engines, full power."]
It should come as no surprise [Scotty: "Prepare for warp drive."]
"Scotty" is his name. [Scotty: "Full speed ahead, sir.]
He's Scotty [Scotty: "Aye, sir?"]
Yeah baby, he's Scotty. [Scotty: "If I do say so myself, the engines are purrin' like a kitten, sir."]
Well, Mars or Venus, phasers fire at his desire
Yeah, he's a pistol with his little dilithium crystal!
Spock has little pointy ears
Sulu never sounds Chinese [Sulu: "Hi there."]
Alien girls love Captain Kirk [Alien Girl: "Please teach me: what is a kiss?"]
Bones has gone berserk! [McCoy: "Dammit, Jim!"]
Well Scotty [Scotty: "Aye, Sir?"]
Yeah baby, where's Scotty? [Scotty: "I'm in the transporter room, Sir. Energizing now."]
Yeah, he's a pistol with his little dilithium crystal
Mars or Venus, phasers fire at his desire!
[Scotty: "I've pushed her all the way, Sir!"]
[Scotty: "I've got an hour of power at the most!"]
[Scotty: "The matter/antimatter reactors are going into overload!"]
[Scotty: "I can't change the laws of physics, Captain!"]
Klingons ready to attack [Uhuru: "Hailing frequencies open, Captain."]
Food supply is running short [McCoy: "Dammit, Jim!"]
Kirk has gotta have warp drive [Chekhov: "Warp factor 2, Keptin."]
Please engine room report! [Scotty: "Engineer Scott, here."]
Well Scotty
Yeah baby, he's Scotty.
Mars or Venus, phasers fire at his desire
Yeah, he's a pistol with his little dilithium crystal!
Scotty was his name!
[Scotty: "Full power, Sir -- let's punch a hole through 'er!"]
[Scotty: "Get down and get funky, Captain."]
[Scotty: "Jam on it, Sir."]
[Scotty: "Aye, Sir!"]
Funny stuff.
Cheers,
Michael

Okay, ST : TOS purists, show thyselves! I need help with "Balance of Terror" (http://www.startrek.com/startrek/view/series/TOS/episode/68678.html) (ep 9). I tried twice to watch it today. The first time I fell asleep (not because it was especially boring, but just because I was being lazy on the couch), and the second time my dog distracted me so I couldn't pay it much attention. I decided not to watch it a third time, so tell me, am I missing anything? I know it is the first ep with the Romulans, and I got to see the big reveal, which was cool. But after that it just seemed like a whole lot of back-n-forth with the battle strategy between the two commanders (who eventually end up "friends" right before the Romulan offs himself). I know it's supposed to be a classic, but the back-n-forth really wasn't doing it for me, especially having just watched "The Carbomite Maneuver" (http://www.startrek.com/startrek/view/series/TOS/episode/68666.html) (ep 10) yesterday, which had some more of the self same back-n-forth, but with a cool twist ending, a creepy fake alien, and Clint Howard. Maybe back in the day Romulans were cool aliens, but I'm kinda burnt out on them. Plus I couldn't wait to skip ahead and see "Shore Leave" (http://www.startrek.com/startrek/view/series/TOS/episode/68694.html) (ep 17). ;)

"Balance of Terror" is my all-time favorite episode of any Trek series! (Personally, I think the Romulans are much more interesting and believable aliens than the Klingons -- especially the idiotic Next-Gen era Klingons, but I digress.)
There are lots of reasons, mostly boiling down to that it's so well-written.
The Romulans are portrayed as complex and distinct individuals, each with his own motivations. They are portrayed as having a distinct code of honour and a sense of patriotism, so their actions are perfectly understandable, and you wind up feeling truly sympathetic toward them -- particularly the Centurian and the Commander.
This is (sadly), one of the few episodes in which the writers got it right when it comes to portraying the Enterprise as a warship defending the frontiers of the Federation and Kirk as a truly capable and even brilliant commander. So often, we hear characters saying Kirk is a great captain, but his actions make it clear that he's not. But in this episode, you can easily believe that Kirk's reputation is well-earned: he's decisive, quick-thinking, shrewd, and a brilliant tactician [notice that Kirk and the Romulan Commander are executing their tactics in 3 dimensions -- how often do you see spacecraft taking advantage of the fact that they have 3 degrees of freedom in their movements in a typical sci-fi movie or tv show?].
Nor do the writers shirk from pointing out that war comes at a high cost -- people die, and we don't just hear about it offscreen. They're well-developed characters whom we actually care about, not anonymous "Redshirts."
Granted, the "bigotry is bad" subplot was a bit heavy-handed by today's standards (but remember, this was 1966, when that was a daring stand for a mainstream television show to take!), but I just love this episode.
If only all of the episodes were so well-written, with such complex, well-developed, and sympathetic characters!
Cheers,
Michael
[Incidentally, if you liked "The Corbomite Maneuver," pay careful attention when you watch "The Deadly Years." You'll see a neat little example of how clever Kirk can be. Watch for Sulu's knowing smile -- a very nice touch, that.]

I adore TNG and Voyager, which makes me question if I qualify to post here. ;)
My deep love of TOS comes from watching it as a new network show on which truly amazing things could happen, such as the first interracial kiss, and an interracial crew, with both an American and a Russian (these were heavy Cold War years).
If women didn't get the ultimate fair shake until Voyager, it was hardly Gene Roddenberry's fault: his first choice of actor to play the captain of the Enterprise was Majel Barrett.

Spock is always going on about how such-and-such an action is or is not "logical." But whether or not an action is logical depends upon your desires.
If I desire to kill someone, then the perfectly logical thing to do is point a phaser at him or her and pull the trigger. This does not make it the right or the moral thing to do.
My point? Half the time Spock says something is or is not "logical" he's just blowing hot air. Okay, here is an example to clarify the point:
"To hunt a species to extinction is not logical."
-- Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home
Spock is making several unspoken assumptions here. Indeed, it would be perfectly logical to hunt a species to extinction, if one considered that species a threat to our own existence, for example. (The World Health Organization has deliberately targeted the bacterium Mycobacterium tuberculosis, which causes tuberculosis, for extinction. Will anyone shed a tear or bemoan the "illogic" of doing so should we succeed in rendering the species extinct?)
Discussion?

Michael

I like "Devil in the Dark," but it's not nearly so good after you know the "surprise ending," I'm sure. "Operation: Annihilate!" has never been one of my favorites, though. (If you've ever seen the blooper tapes, there's an outtake from that episode in which one of the parasites leaps up and attaches itself to Mr. Spock's ... er ... hindquarters, shall we say. Nimoy's reaction is priceless.)
"The City on the Edge of Forever" and "Space Seed" are both excellent. I've read Harlan Ellison's original version: yes, it's quite a good story, but it is most-definitely not Star Trek. (It has Engineering crewmembers dealing drugs and other such completely non-ST stuff.) Ellison threw a hissy fit because his script was rewritten, but honestly, if he's going to butcher the characters in such a way, he has no business complaining, in my opinion.

To The Lone Ranger, and anyone else who is interested, I have searched long and hard for the Star Trek parody of Venus, titled "He's Scotty." I actually found it on my old mini cassette I used when I was in school. I happened to have it handy when "He's Scotty" came on the radio one time. I don't recall that they ever did any "Mirror Mirror" updates on TNG, though more than a few episodes from S1 TNG seemed to be TOS retreads.
I must say that the remastered TOS episodes have some real curb appeal. So far my favorite re-do was The Doomsday Machine. The shot where Decker takes the Enterprise on a phaser-strafing run and as it swoops in low along the hull you can see that neutronium son-of-a-bitch going on for miles...

I actually have the song "He's Scotty" ripped to an MP3. If you're interested, I can email it to you. It's about 3MB. Let me know.

OK I resisted for as long as I could but I just had to reply to the Lone Ranger's earlier post on Spock. Warning: this post is for TLR. Contents may upset ST fans
Spock's "logic" was one of the many reasons I decided, in my early teens, that Star Drek was crap. Too serious about itself to be pure space opera, SW-style, and too ill-thought out to be entertaining in the thought-provoking manner of some more cerebral sci-fi. When the "smart" character constantly says things that are stupid enough for a kid to figure out they're stupid, its difficult (for me at least) to suspend disbelief. Spock was like the doctor in Heroes, a supposedly erudite and rational character who's utterances are so at odds with their fictional role that they make immersion in the fictional world they occupy impossible.
ETA: For TLR's eyes only! I don't want to make the whole thread all negative, honest! Just don't click on the spoiler, m'kay? Fight the compulsion!

To hate a television show for clumsy scripting is most illogical.

Oops .. um. Star Trek. Yeah.
Did I ever mention I was never a fan of this franchise until I saw Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan? 'Tis true; I hardly knew what the whole ST:TOS was about until, inspired by this movie, I started paying attention to the TV episodes.
Also, I bought the Star Trek (season one) in HD-DVD before Toshiba gave up the fight. I have been enjoying the cleaned up episodes.

The best part of Lost is at the end, you know, when it's over.

Welcome to the FF, plusos! There's an "Introductions thread" (http://www.freethought-forum.com/forum/showthread.php?t=370) where you can introduce yourself, if you like.
Personally, I'd love to get an mp3 of "He's Scotty".
Cheers,
Michael
