Drowning?

Drowning?
Well unless you are clicking really, really slowly, you click on the emoticon itself eventually, which selects it and should highlight it in blue (or at least appears to have in our broswers.)

Oh must be those substandard MS browsers, huh?

I'm using Mozilla, actually. :-/
Try clicking on the emoticon and dragging the mouse.

Right, so unless I was clicking and dragging the spoiler button, it wouldn't happen. :P

I'm assuming that during the repeated and increasingly furious mouse clicks, people are moving their mouse button slightly, which causes it to highlight the emoticon. But enough of that...
All must bow before my ingenuity with the uber bested spoiler tags.

C'mon liv! You should know that if you just hit the http://www.freethought-forum.com/forum/images/freethought/buttons/quote.gif button in the o.p., you'll be able to see exactly how he did it!

Unfortunately, the hovertext thing in the forum index display revealed the content of the spoiler before I even opened the thread.
Does this show up a generic problem with the hovertext and the spoiler tag, I wonder? Of course, spoilers could always be padded far enough into a normal post, so that they go beyond the range of the hovertext preview.

I have previews disabled, so I've never noticed. Very good question, though. Thanks for bringing it up.

Aren't they annoying? I totally hate them. As soon as I saw that hack I knew I had to have it.

Yeah, the preview kinda messes it up.
For anyone not in the know, putting brackets around your text will prevent the preview from seeing that text. However, it doesn't count towards your 5 minimum characters or whatever that is needed for your post.
So you could start a thread like:
****
[insert post here]
...
****
and all people would see is the "..."
