A very kind and generous soul among our membership here (who wishes to remain anonymous), got tired of hearing me whine about my horribly outdated and rickety desktop computer over the last couple years and so bought me a new one. I can hardly contain my excitement about it since the hard drive in my old (and noisy) Athlon 750mhz system was making occasional thunking sounds and just because I yearned for a faster system.

Here's what I got:

Dell Dimension 4700 Pentium-4, 2.8 ghz
512 MB DDR SDRAM 400MHz
80 GB EIDE SATA Hard Drive (7200 rpm)
256 MB Nvidia GeForce 6800 Graphics card
48x CD/RW Drive
16x DVD ROM Drive
All the trimmings, and...

A Dell 17" Ultrasharp 1704FP Flat Panel LCD Monitor!!

:woohoo:

I just finished setting up the new PC and the monitor is supposed to arrive tomorrow.

I can't believe how superfast this thing is. Amazing. :yup:

I really can't thank my anonymous benefactor enough for this extraordinary gift, but I'll keep trying.

Thank you so much! :)

:fuming: Now you'll be able to complain about how good it is and you can wax into a few you're not worthies and normalcy  will be maintained. As much as things change the more they remain the same. It's all good. Congrats on the new benefactor's gift  . Can we start a thread seeking the identity of the benefactor?

Can we start a thread seeking the identity of the benefactor?
:chuckle: Well I can't stop ya, but I don't think it would be a very nice thing to do to the person what with their wanting to remain anonymous and all.

Rest assured I'll never tell. :)

*clears throat loudly and speaks loudly enough for all benefactors out there to hear*

Man, the computer I'm using sucks large, it's slow, clunky and the screen is at full brightness and still I can barely see the colour white, let alone the darker colours! This things crashes more than a drunk teenager and it makes more noise than I do after a night of curry and soda. It smells almost as bad too. It's less than 500Mhz and it has less than 20 gigs of space. The CD writer is only a 12X writer and I can't even playa DVD.

I can't stand it anymore, I really need a new one. And I'm going to just complain and complain and complain about it here on the FF. It's all I can do, sadly.

just a joke, btw

Oh suuuuure it was. :wtf:

Just for the record, I must state that I was not the AB, and that any offers I've made to send computers to people stem from my access to several really old and crappy discontinued models from work.

Congrats, Tom. I hope you know and appreciate that this means a lot more nagging for site modifications from me.

And thanks for the offer, you're very kind :yup: :yup: :yup:

But Sou and I will get a new computer sometime soon and until then we'll just keep posting all over the net as each other! :chuckle:

Ahh, but if you were to gift just such a model to slimshady, you would severely curtail his ability to compete with you at Tetris.

Wow. That's so cool, vm. The generosity of folks on the boards I visit is incredible. At SC a while back, one guy had a brand new X-box that he gave to another member for her kid. He lives in Australia and even picked up the tab for shipping it to the US. That's just one example. I only wish I had the means to be as generous. My praise to the AB.

I'm still pretty floored by the whole thing and feel more than a little undeserving.

One of the best parts is that it has Windows XP on it. Not that I'm a huge fan of M$ or Windows XP, but if I should ever find myself back in the computer business (which at this point I'm hoping to) I'll need familiarity with it. I've been using Win 2k since it came out.

I'll probably turn the old computer into a linux box. I'd donate it to someone else but I honestly don't think it's worth what it would cost to ship to someone and I fear that the hard drive is really on its last leg...

I hate my car. It is old, has a broken gas gauge, it is hard to start, and it spews odorous fumes. Can someone buy me a new car?

Hey, vm! It's about fuckin' time you got into the world of the GHz! I've heard that monitor kicks ass -- let us know how it looks when it gets there.

Dear Anonymous Benefactor,

Thanks for fixing Tom up. Now, could you do something about the lame-ass network at my workplace?

Thanks for your consideration,
Warren

P.S. My five year old Gateway is a 700 MHz with only 256 MB of RAM and a tiny harddrive and a non-working sound card. What say you, Anonymous Benefactor?

[Note: Please ignore the 2.8 GHz Dell in my daughter's room. It is not mine to use. Or, so I'm told. heh]

Anonymous Benefactor, my ass. Who did you have to blow, vm? And does whoever it was need another one?

Thanks, Bey.

Sharon:

Ha! Rest assured if I knew someone who'd trade new PC's for blowjobs they would be more than adequately taken care of. :didi:

Congrats Tom! And my thanks to your AB. That is seriously cool and reminds us that nice people still exist in this world.

Damn, I am all aglow from the warm fuzzies and YOU'RE the one with the new kick ass system!

Oh, and livius, I totally got you beat on the old crappy computers from work. My home one that got spywared was a 98 HP Pavilion that we stole from work and souped up with spare parts...so i win ;)

Oh yeah?! Well, my car won't even start, has a busted window, and moss growing on it. So there! :cheer:

Oh..... wait....... :sadcheer:

Seriously, congrats Tom, you definitely deserve it. The kind person who sent it to you must feel that way, as well.

Thanks Shea, Freemonkey and ceptimus (missed your post earlier) and my sympathies to you other needy people. :didi:

I don't have the monitor yet, oddly. The tracking info said it left the Ft. Worth facility (which is less than an hours drive from here) at 4:39 am, but it didn't come. Maybe it left the facility in the back of one of the employees cars! :D

I'm sure the driver was just running late or something today and will come by first thing in the morning, though. So I won't get to ooze my excitement aloud until then... :slide:

Okay the monitor arrived today, and it's installed and sitting on my desk. It's got a crystal clear picture, a tiny footprint and it freely tilts and even rotates to landscape view. Very awesome. :yup:

Thanks again, AB. :woohoo:
