View Full Version : Avatarts (you know who you are)

Inspired by vm's fabulous "avatart" typo here (http://www.freethought-forum.com/forum/showthread.php?p=45381#post45381), I have come up with two defintions:

avatart (a-vah-tahr-t) noun

Someone who changes avatars with a frequency verging on the promiscuous.
A highly decorated, roccoco avatar (see: tarted up).

Crumb, I'm looking at you. Seven, you're right behind him.

When I came to this board, I was going to use the same avatar I've used on other boards for years.

Namely, this one: http://www.xoup.net/img/avatareinstein.jpg Or, for Halloween: http://www.xoup.net/img/avatareinstein2.jpg

Then I decided to try something new.

Should I revert to Einstein's Tongue?

I'll take you up on that offer Sonnet. There's alot of good pictures of Rob Zombie and his hypno eyes out there but I haven't a clue with graphics. Usually if I shrink them the pictures end up way too small. Also cool images of zombies would be nice. I'm pretty flexible as long as it resembles my username.

I'm thinking maybe of starting a small business; maybe sometime I'll build a site and build custom avatars for $5 or something. Not today, though. Now it's just fun.

Beth: give me some words, some ideas. You don't have to be specific; in fact, I like to interpret. Favorite colors, textures, adjectives that describe you, hobbies, things that mean something. A poem, an animal, a STYLE, even.

K, Zombie...

I didn't know if you wanted a moving one or just one single pic, so I started with a moving one. I'm looking for a way to send it to you; it's a little large for the attachment size it'll accept here, although it's the right size for an avatar. If you want something different, let me know.

Actually, I'll just upload it as my avatar until you can see it and let me know what you think. If you like it, grab it.

I think custom avatar requests clearly deserve their own category in the Gallery, don't y'all agree? In fact, I've gone ahead and created it and uploaded Ex-zombie's just to get the ball rolling (and so you can go back to your own av, Sonnet). I think it should be posted under the artist's name, however; when you upload it yourself, Sonnet, I'll delete my version.

In fact that should be the theme for your avatar.*sigh* there are so many implications to that, some not so good, well most, including the more innocent attention hogging. Well, dunno, maybe I am an attention getter, a flashy new av would possibly signify that. :chin:

Sonnet: I like flowery things, pretty things, but I also like edgy things. I am a huge fan of AbFab (http://www.bbc.co.uk/comedy/abfab/) and been one since I first saw it aired on Comedy Central. I see Patsy and Eddie as two parts to one person, so I like the characters equally. I have three avatar ready pics from different boards that I'll put up, in case you wanna use them. Thanks and cheers!

Crumb

Well Crumb was kind of a spur of the moment kind of name. It is really just kind of a lighthearted thing. It didn't come from the comic book guy, it came from some crumbs I saw when I was trying to think of a new name. (Although, I do like the look of the comic book guys name in that red with yellow shadow font.)

So keep it light, friendly, but still with some natural wonder in there, a little deep mystery maybe.

I don't personally think animated is synonymous with flashing. Yours is the first avatar I've seen here that I would describe as flashing, and the first that has agitated me to the point that I've felt compelled to hide it. It's a shame, 'cause if you should change it and don't make a post (that I see) announcing the change, it's unlikely I'll ever un-hide it and I think avatars liven up a profile.

Meanwhile, you've given us incentive to explore a software modification to allow members the option of ignoring images in the gallery. Until then I think we might have to disable the display of the newest three images and the random images in the gallery index. I don't know how else we can make the gallery accessible to Beth, who will probably choose to avoid it entirely rather than run the risk of another migraine. It might be a good idea to disable those features anyway, to give people a chance to browse the gallery while avoiding whole categories of images they aren't interested in seeing.

Relax Ymir's blood, it is only temporary and is only to be used in the most direst of emergencies, like an unwanted assault by xouper's av. In that kind of situation the smilies become a tragic unavoidable casualty. Its ok though, with Liv around there will never be a smilie shortage.

So, here's what I've gleaned about xouper, and I hope I'm wrong: he's so adamantly against the IDEA that ANYONE'S avatar moves at all that it causes him the kind of personal discomfort that some people have when they can't control what other people like or do. SO, to PUNISH other people for liking something HE DOESN'T, instead of simply ignoring the things he doesn't like quietly so everyone can have a nice time, he actually creates a flashing avatar that GENUINELY HURTS PEOPLE by giving them migraines, and somehow thinks ACTUAL PAIN is fair trade for enjoying something he doesn't. So, now Beth, who DARED to like her gently moving avatar - whose images change as frequently as, say a sitcom or a commercial, has to pay by avoiding an image gallery where xouper has placed his instrument of retribution.

Images move this fast on TV and in movies all the time without offending your delicate ocular sensibilities. This, I daresay, is about control.

Fuck you, Sonnet!!

Your accusation is a cheap shot and totally untrue. This is not about controlling what others do, I was just having some fun. And at the time I made my flashing avatar, I did not know anyone would be physically hurt by it. That you would accuse me of deliberately trying to cause someone genuine pain is despicable and unfounded.

In any case, I was planning to withdraw my avatar sooner or later after having made my point about annoying avatars, and now that I know it causes Beth physical pain, I shall delete it from the forum entirely, including the gallery.

The admins have my permission to edit my posts to remove the flashing avatar, since I cannot do it myself. And I apologize to everyone for this. Except Sonnet, whom I do not apologize to.

I have to say that I had NO IDEA that offering to make other people fun avatars would end up this way, with people feeling badly and like they should take them down. To be perfectly honest, you might have noticed that I qualified my statements with 'what I've gleaned' and 'I hope I'm wrong' - both designed to clarify that this is just the way it seemed now, and that I hoped some future information might clear it all up.

Now, speaking of what people expect, you might want to admit to yourself that your original post wasn't designed to make anyone who had made or chosen a moving avatar feel very good. If we're being honest here, then own the fact that, as insignificant as all this really is, you meant to inject a little ill will, be a little bit of a downer, rain a little on our fun. It's all small potatoes, but that's really at least a good part of your original intent - it made at least one person feel badly enough to take theirs down - and so I return your question: what did you expect?

We don't have to be eternal enemies over this, and moving avatars don't necessarily have to be a casualty, especially since you seem to be in the minority when it comes to those who adamantly oppose them. I thought you were being kind of an asshole, and told you so; now you've done the same to me. Happens every day, doesn't have to be the end of the world.

Not good enough. Suppose I were to say, "I hope I'm wrong, but all the evidence I have so far indicates that Sonnet is a pedophile." Is my "disclaimer" sufficient to mitigate the false accusation? Think about that.

But instead of having a discussion about it, you turned it into a flame war right from the start.

I could have tempered my initial feelings, you're right, and tried to let you know what I thought more gently. I still stand by my point that whether you're overt or veiled in the way you make your feelings known, the respectable thing is to take responsibility for your intention. If you're going to do it, own it, that's all. You didn't necessarily have to say anything at all; you could simply hit 'escape' when you load a page, or disable a specific person's avatar. What is the point, really, in arbitrarily letting someone know that you don't happen to like ANYTHING that makes them happy? It's never intended to brighten their day, now is it? I tend to associate behavior like that with a certain personality type (and when I say 'I hope I'm wrong' it means that I understand that appearances can deceive and it's unwise to generalize), the kind who likes to take the fun out of things they don't like. Maybe I'm wrong about that, too; it's really hard to tell from one encounter on a message board. It's very likely that this is just a bad moment - over something intended to be nice and fun and cheerful, which still makes me sad.

Do you want me to choose image/images, or would you rather I choose it/them? Ordinarily, I leave them up to the avi maker, but I'm good either way, and can also give you a variety from which to pick the one/ones you would most like to work with. Please let me know what you prefer.

Thanks,

Anyone who wishes to make their own, simple animated avatar should download this freeware program --> UnFREEz (http://www.whitsoftdev.com/unfreez/). It's about 20kb and it's super easy to use. You just drag and drop in the images you want to use in the order you want them and pick the time between frames.

There are more sophistimacated programs out there, but this one is fast, small, easy to use and great for beginners (like me!).

It's a chop of my Chinese name. My parents had one made for me while in China. The chop is adorned with a dog, my Chinese zodiac animal.

I think I like it.

Kewl.

Are there four ideograms included in the chop?

Which one is the pooch?

I think it looks great on you, eldar. Here's a version with a transparent background, if you feel the urge.

Yes, there are four ideograms in the chop. I'm embarassed to say that I'm not entirely familiar with them, despite it being my name. I was taught how to write my name in Chinese at age five. When I showed that I simply couldn't do it correctly, my parents gave up.

But, reading from right-to-left and top-to-bottom.

The upper right is my family name (Yee).
The lower right is the first part of my given name (Wei).
The upper left is the second part of my given name (Yau).
The lower left is not part of my name, but a flourish or title of some kind for balance in the chop.

There's no actual character for dog. I should have been more clear. The chop is a marble block with a stamp on one end and a tiny statue of a Chinese-stylized dog on the other.

Maybe I'll take a picture of it and post it here.

And without even having to make such a request, you have anticipated my urges and satisfied them thoroughly.

Thank you.

Ah... Yes, now I know what you mean. I had misinterpreted you as saying that one of the characters was "dog". Instead, the top of the chop is a dog icon. I have four chops, two with rabbits and two with serpents (I'm a serpent)....the chop itself is no reference to me, as I'm about as Celto-Saxon as they come.

Boy, it sure looks like Yee means something akin to "holds up the sky".

Thanks.

Hmmm...

Let's see, I'd say it looks like a thunderstorm over a lake and valley with a river. Yee Mai-Yau rains on your parade? Yee Mai-Yau "makes water"? Or, Yee Mai-Yau, fructifier of the ancient spirits? Or, Yee Mai-Yau, Chief Toliet Flusher?

:innocent:

Velly crever, white devil.

Actually, I think it looks like a toilet brush over a toilet. And since I have to clean two of the bathrooms in the house, it does seem appropriate.

Oh... yeah.... sorry, I misread that. It's "Chief Toilet Scrubber".

So, is that pronounced "poo-gon"?

Hehe. Reminds me of a book title... Brown Spots on the Wall by Whoo Flung Poo. :D

Ahem... That's Hu Flung Pu.

My favorite is 50 Yards to the Outhouse by Willy Maykit, illustrated by Betty Woendt.

Of course, that's off-topic, unlike The Yellow River by I.P. Freeley.

My latest is a double-F, although not for Freethought Forum. Instead it's a Fear Factory (http://www.fearfactory.com/) logo.
