View Full Version : Help me! Win 98 SE won't Open Link Windows!

Help! I need somebody. Help! Not just anybody! Help! You know I need someone! Hellllp!
When I was younger, so much younger than today,
My Windows program opened windows everyday.
But now those days are gone; I'm not so self assured.
Now I find I've changed my mind; I've opened up the doors!
Won't you please, please help me?
(Help me, help me, help me, ooh-ahh)

That's a cute post, but its rather lacking in detail. Exactly what do you mean by "link windows"? What error messages if any do you get? When I first saw the thread title, I figured you meant links in your web browser. If so, most links do not open new windows. What browser are you using? Are you using a pop-up blocker?

I'm so computer-impaired as to not know what details to give until asked, so I thought I should at least attempt to make my first post amusing, in return for my shameless begging for assistance, and the extra trouble my ignorance entails.
 Yes, I suppose it would be a browser problem, wouldn't it?
I have IE6Something, and I'm not using a pop-up blocker, because I know better.
When I click on, for instance, the link for more smilies, a new window appears, but remains entirely blank, as do browser windows when I click links like this one here:

Is this behavior new? The first thing I'd try is to clear your cookies and clean out your internet cache. To do that, go to the Tools menu, then select Internet Options. First click on Delete Cookies, and then click on Delete Files.

Yes, it is, John. I tried deleting my files, I ran my Norton utilities program, I rebooted. What I haven't done is to go back to my supposedly idiot-proof tweak program to see if I can tell if I tweaked myself into this mess somehow.

Try this, Seven.
Close all your applications, including all browser windows. Click on Start - Run, and in the box paste the following (spaces and everything):
regsvr32 /s urlmon.dll
Click OK and then try clicking on a link again.

Okay, tried that; thank you, liv! It didn't work, which makes me wonder if I'm missing that .dll file. (My old old comp sort of sloughed them off somehow, and I had to replace them.) How do I find the dratted thing to download it again?????

I ran my Norton Windoctor program again, and I'm not missing three AIM files. I'm missing two AIM files, and one called "miscoree.dll".
It say it has something to do with my installer, but it also says it's a shared file. Could that be my problem, Captain?

I don't think so, Seven. I got a list of pertinent dll's from microsoft's site, and that one isn't on it. Try running the regsvr32 command exactly as you did above on each of the following files, one at a time. Be sure everything's closed, now!
Shdocvw.dll
Msjava.dll
Actxprxy.dll
Oleaut32.dll
Mshtml.dll
Browseui.dll

Aye, Captain. I did it again, this time with my browser windows closed
but it still didn't work, although I got the "suceeded" message. Captain, the array continues to malfunction, inspite of all your efforts on my behalf.
Apparently, I have only begun to bang my head. :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead:

Captain, the system wouldn't allow me to run any of these. It has informed me that these files don't have a program associated with them for performing these actions. Then it apparently believes itself to be telling me how to create such associations, but, if so, it's mistaken.
Whatever language my OS is speakng ("Gatesese"?) is only rarely comprehensible to me. I used to think Engrish was nearly impossible to understand, but now I go to the Engrish site to relax.

I believe you, Captain! How do I go about doing that?
I had a slim version of Netscape at one time, but I disliked it; for one thing, it slowed me down, and my dial-up connection, my ISP, and my comp slow me down enough, as it is.
I also found the favorites list hard to manage.

I used to use IE and switched to Firefox. Even though it has some issues, it really is a great browser.
Since links won't open in a new window for you, open a window yourself and paste http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/start/ into the address bar. This will take you to the download page. Click on "Free Download" and save the exe file somewhere where you can easily find it (I suggest your Desktop).
Once it's finished downloading, find the exe wherever you saved it and double-click on it. It'll run a quick install and voila: new browser. Now, open Firefox and click on File - Import. Select the items you wish to import, click next and it'll drag all your IE favorites, cookies, passwords, etc over to Firefox so you can get right back to business without skipping a beat.
Once you've done all that, we can talk gussying it up a little with some nice extensions. :)

Nevertheless, I'd still like to reinstall my IE. Where do I find the reinstallation file?
I had win95 for a long time because I lost Win 98 after I had to reformat after a virus, and I simply can't recall. All I remember is that it isn't in my IE program folder.

freemonkey, I have Spybot and Adaware, and I run both at least once every day. Spybot fixes a security issue, but, otherwise, neither of them appear to be removing any crappola specifically installed by MS. Can you tell me more, please?

I guess what I'm trying to say is that Windows and IE have this one advantage over most of their competitors: they're relatively easy to understand and use. Use? Maybye, since Firefox doesn't come preinstalled. It's installer is just like any other windows installer, by the way, you shouldn't have any problems with it.
Understand? I've found Firefox to be far simpler to configure and operate than IE. It's settings are also far clearer -- to disable cookies, you effin' disable cookies, not fiddle with some meaningless "security control bar". To disable javascript you effin' disable javascript. And so forth. :) Remember, Firefox is a browser that's minimal by design; and yet it's still very powerful for it.except for Word. I've never been able to teach myself to use Word. There's no shame in that. I'm of the opinion that Word is one of the worst programs ever made, ergonomically speaking. It started as a fairly decent and clear program but they kept adding crap nobody needed to force people to keep buying it, until it became a mutant monster. Can you imagine what it'd be like if they did that with hardware? Like a keyboard with 30,000 keys, a mouse with 37 buttons... :shudder:

I can't find it, but I seem to remember a thread that liv started a long time ago having to do with learning about this kind of thing. It was a treasure trove of links to sites with a valuable info and utilities.
I learned quite a bit, the hard way, a couple years ago when my husband accidently clicked to close a pop up and my browser was hijacked. I spent 2 days learning about internet security and cleaning all the crap off my computer. While I was angry about it, I also learned a great deal and have yet to see even a blip (except for some Microshit stuff when I ran an update).
Here's a couple links to get you started:
techguy.com (http://forums.techguy.org/index.php?) , SpywareInfo.com (http://spywareinfo.com/), How did I get infected...? (http://boards.cexx.org/viewtopic.php?t=957)
And maybe someone else remembers the earlier thread I was referring to?

Captain, does that mean I'd have to make new ones using IE, and then export them to Firefox? :banghead:
This is where my IE situation stands now:
I reinstalled an earlier version of six, and then I could click on links again, but it couldn't download its own service pack.
So I downloaded Firefox, and used it to download the service pack, leaving me stuck with the setup icon on my desktop in the process, but otherwise I thought it went well, except that I ended up with those old blue-on-white desktop icons which make my head hurt.
Only, since I downloaded the service pack, I'm back to where I started, and can't get the links I click on with IE.
:banghead:
I think it's hopeless.

Hmmm... Okay, let's see. When you asked if Firefox would put internet shortcut icons on your desktop, did you mean shortcuts like from downloads or your favorites? I thought you meant the latter, but from this latest post it looks like you mean the shortcut to the service pack.
You should be able to delete any and all of those desktop shortcuts by holding down the Ctrl key, left-clicking on each one, and then hitting your Delete key. If you hold down the Shift key when you hit delete, it'll get rid of them without putting them in the Recycle bin first.

I meant shortcuts from My faves list, I guess. When I search, I often place an icon on my desktop and add the site to my favs list, and I frequently change those icons.
I moved a large number into files in my Start menu, I'll be making more files there as tme goes on, and yet my desktop will still be covered with them.
If I knew how to take a screenshot of my desktop, I'd display it and look forward to the resulting gasps of horror. :D
Firefox put the actual set-up file on my desktop, not a shortcut, and I'm not allowed move it.

I think making firefox your default browser should suffice. In FF go to the Tools menu and select "Options..." On the left hand side click on "General", about for boxes down will be a button (on the right) that says "check now". If you click it it will say that FF is not your default browser and than ask if you want it to be. Click yes. Later if you run IE you will probably have to tell it not to check if it is your default browser anymore, or it will keep bugging you.

I meant tell me if you need to resort to it.
You can't, by any chance, turn up your resolution on your monitor can you? (RIght click on desktop -> Properties -> "Settings" tab -> set the "screen area" slide all the way to the right) If you can it should help with the IrfanView big window problem.

Captain, how do I open Windows Explorer? :blush3:
He he... And I was so sure I had broken down all the steps.
I'm not familiar with Windows 98, but in 95 and Windows 2000, you can rick-click on the Start button and left click on Explore. If that doesn't work, try clicking on Start - Programs - Accessories - Windows Explorer.

Right click on "my documents" or "my computer" and click explore works.

Thank you, Crumb. That worked! :)
It's been annoying me not to be able to access that tree setup.

Thank you, Captain. In Win98SE, Explorer doesn't appear to be listed anywhere in the Programs or Start menu, but right clicking on Start works. :)
EDIT: oops, sorry; when I click Explore from Start, it explores my start menu only.

Oddly enough, Crumb, I stumbled onto this solution probably at about the time you were writing this post.
However, I have to change it back again afterward to allow me to read my icon labels.
Unfortunately, my AOL upgrade keeps insisting that I install both Real Player and Quicktime, and Quicktime keeps worming in somehow, even though I keep clicking "no" every time AOL offers to install the dratted thing.
As a result, Quicktime now keeps wresting control from my Irfanview program. :qsigh:
On a happier note, I'm not embroiled in the non-stop browser war which began when I installed Netscape.
But...I can't figure out how to associate my Arrow Search program with Firefox, so now I have two sets of Favorite Lists, which is confusing. :(

Hmm... Perhaps it just opens to that folder? This is what Windows Explorer looks like to me when I have it stretched wide enough to see the top of the list on the left (identifying info blacked out):

Do you see something similar? Perhaps if you scroll up or maximize the window (click on the small box in the upper right hand corner between the X and the _).

Mine doesn't do that, Captain. I feel so *sob* cheated.
Tonight my Java platform icon popped up and I got a message saying "CF countdown started."
When I changed fora, the message disappeared, although the Java platform icon remains.
If I hadn't come here when I did, would Firefox and I have blasted off?

Perhaps you need to push the "Folders" button to get the frame on the right.

Well, DUH! I must not have really clicked Explore last time because I checked again and now I can see the tree thingy.
My last OS always diplayed the tree, so this is taking some getting used to. Anytime the smallest thing changes in me, I have difficulty adapting.
I used to be so much quicker on the draw. :qsigh:
