Ymir's blood
03-21-2009, 07:02 PM
pescifish passed away this morning. She had a series of strokes beginning in mid February. The cause was an infection in her heart which the doctors were unable to identify and antibiotics were unable to stop. She spent the last two weeks at home with family members, friends and her cat Mojave.
Her wishes were to be cremated and her ashes spread on the hill behind her house. Her sister indicated to me that those wishes will be carried out.

The dogs have been kenneled since she was hospitalized. When she first came home, they were brought back for day but then taken away as Sadie tried protecting her from the caregiver. I really don't know what will happen to them.
Her sister was looking after Mojave until recently and may take her permanently. They seemed to be do well together.
I don't know about Flutter. She has been in a bird 'kennel' since it started.

Such sad news :( To echo LadyShea, thanx ES for letting me know by phone to sort of break the news. Sorry I couldn't reach you right back.) I am sorry to say I didn't know of her most recent issues as we'd fallen out of regular touch in the last couple of years, but I am happy to have had the pleasure of knowing her and hanging out on several occasions as part of the larger "SoCal" contingent. She was a very generous woman (at one of our get togethers, I mentioned how much I loved El Torito's sweet corn cake and she mailed me several packets of the mix to make it) and a lot of fun to converse with. She had a lot of good jalapeno-including recipes as well :)

Pesci was extremely generous, donating a substantial amount of her time and money to the development and ongoing sustainment of this forum. She was also one of few :ff: members I met personally on several occasions, and I regret that I wasn't a better friend to her while I had the chance. I was looking forward to telling her I just bought the George Foreman deep fryer and sharing recipe ideas with her.
That said, I'm a little pissed that I wasn't made aware of her condition, by her or anyone else. I'm sure I couldn't have done much but I would have done what I could to make her last days more pleasant and to let her know I cared. I fully understand the many possible reasons I was left out of the loop and I'll get over it, I'd just like to make my feelings known in case a similar situation should arise with any of you other fuckers.

I'm sorry if you were hurt by my silence. Ensign Steve wanted to say something earlier, so please don't hold anything against her.
When pescifish told me to keep it quiet, the health issue was serious (she was in the hospital) but not known to be life threatening. A further stroke took her ability to speak and also made it impossible to safely correct the infected heart valve. I spoke to her regularly after that, but she wasn't able to say anything to me now was she able to write out any messages to be relayed. Up until last Monday, I deluded myself with the hope that she would recover and didn't question my decision to follow her early request. After that, I was wrapped up in plans to fly out there.
Please accept my apology, no snub was intended.

Hadn't pesci been struggling with her health for years? Sight especially? She was probably fed up with talking about it.
Her health had taken a serious downturn over the last six months, quite possibly related to the auto-immune disease that affected her vision. The doctors suggested but were unable to confirm that it might have been responsible for the heart issues, but prior to that she was having kidney trouble as well as problems with her blood sugar.
Along with some other things, this led her to insulate herself somewhat from other people.

A couple months ago when expressed that I was worried about my job, she offered me a place to stay in exchange for handyman services. She had confided to me that she trusted my advice on a number of things, misguided person that she was. I don't even trust myself that much. Trust me, the world is not a better place with her gone.

Her sister-in-law and brother are adopting Flutter.

Well a Unitarian would be pretty standard for an agnostic service. The most religious people in my family have Unitarian services.
"The extent to which the elements of any particular faith tradition are incorporated into one's personal spiritual practices is a matter of personal choice in keeping with Unitarian Universalism's creedless, non-dogmatic approach to spirituality and faith development."

My mom's Unitarian memorial service was quite nice, they called it "a celebration of life", very neutral as far as beliefs. And that's what it was about, her life, not the fact that she was dead or about any afterlife, though there was one woman who said she was sure that if there was a heaven, our mom would be in it.

Oh god, I just read the news. I had to read the OP several times for it to properly sink in.
I remember her from so many years ago from early days of IIDB. I remember her as a wise and generous person, so full of love and giving. She was somebody I wanted to emulate as I grow older and hopefully more wiser and generous.
Reading her posts almost always made me feel better, even when they weren't directed to me.
I'm just saddened and saddened for the people who knew her well, it's just a shocking and major loss.
I'm young and it sucks that I'll be living for many (hopefully) more years without hearing from her again.

I've carried the news of pesci's death to a few other forums. I never knew how many lives she had touched. One person said that having a conversation with pesci was like getting a series of hugs. The words people use to describe her are wise, caring, loving, funny, smart, warm, generous...and on and on in the vein.
I read the various threads about her in various places and my eyes well up with tears at the outpouring of grief at her loss and the remembrances of how she touched so many people. She was a truly remarkable person. We are all richer for knowing her and poorer for her loss.

Some secular humanist groups have trained humanist celebrants who can officiate at marriages, funerals, and the like. I'd contact a group like the American Humanist Association or the Council for Secular Humanism and see if there's anyone in her area who could do a secular funeral.
Edited to add: Here's a website affiliated with the AHA where you can find humanist celebrants (http://www.humanist-society.org/).

This is just so sad. There is so little light and goodness left in the world these days, that losing even one such person is too great a sacrifice to bear. :sigh:
If we do a memorial or something, I think it should be the kind of memorial that makes her friends and family stop and ask themselves "Hmmm. Did pescifish do this? Because it certainly looks like her handiwork."

How did the memorial go, did it happen on May 16th?

It was really beautiful. Tears and laughs, like a good celebration should be. It was really amazing to meet everybody and just see how many lives she touched, and how deeply. For example, there were people there from her job 15 years ago. (I think if it were me, there wouldn't be people from the job I left last week, know what I mean?) I don't know, it's hard to describe or explain, but I think it was a great tribute to her life.
Apropos of not very much, her birthday's tomorrow. Try not to be caught off guard if the forum software pops it up on the days birthdays.

pescifish's sister gave me permission to post some information for her friends about "what happened."
I attended the memorial on May 16, 2009, and it was lovely. They waited a few weeks and did it up right. There were laughs and tears and many remembrances. In the "memory book," pesci's sister included a timeline of the illness that took her so quickly, and also a kind letter from the attending physician that explained the pathology:
"The “What Happened”
Sometime during the weekend of February 14, Cynthia had a clotting stroke, which caused symptoms of a paralyzed right hand
She went into urgent care on February 16th. With nothing showing on the CAT scan, doctors sent Cynthia home with an arm brace saying she had carpal tunnel in her right hand. She went to work on February 17th.
February 18th, Cynthia had a severe headache and continued right hand paralysis so she stayed home from work. By 10:30pm she was so disoriented we went again to urgent care, where the MRI determined Cynthia had had a stroke. She was admitted to the hospital, experiencing paralyzed arm, and an inability to process numbers and vision.
Doctors felt that she had an infection of the heart, which was causing vegetation around her aortic valve. The vegetation was throwing clots through her body. Cynthia was started on a course of strong antibiotics.
February 22, she has a spleen stroke, damaging spleen tissue.
February 28 she is sent to a nursing care facility for rehab from strokes.
48 hours later Cynthia has another stroke creating loss of speech and vision, jumbled numbers (like not udertanding how to use a phone) and arm paralyzed again.
Cynthia is transferred to the heart specialty hospital of Kaiser where it is determined that she is not a good candidate for a valve replacement. Cynthia asks to go home.
Cynthia goes home to 24-hour care on March 10.
March 16, Cynthia has another stroke which leaves her unable to walk, her arm is paralyzed, she is not able to talk, swallowing comes back slowly, numbers are jumbled as well as vision.
March 18, Cynthia is put on hospice care.
March 20, a clot is thrown to her leg causing all her toes to turn purple.
March 21- Cynthia takes her last breath"
The doctor's letter:
"Again, I want to express to you my condolences again but also my thanks for including me in Cynthia's memorial. I will be unable to attend.
But I did just get the final autopsy result from PC Kaiser and it is a true surprise but also fits with what was happening.
I will give you my interpretation and have included the report below. I underlined a section and made the text red on the main diagnosis.
I believe when Cynthia was still in the hospital that I told you that I had never seen an endocarditis (heart infection) with all three leaflets of the aortic valve involved. That I wondered if this were something else like an autoimmune disease, but we reviewed the workup and nothing beared that diagnosis out.
But this autopsy report reveals that Cynthia had cancer, a cancer which spread from another part of her body to her heart and aortic valve. The pieces flicking off the valve seem to be pieces of tumor. That explains why the antibiotics did not stabilize the process and also why she had so many strokes. It also probably explains why Cynthia wanted to get home so badly because she probably knew that she didn't have much time left.
I will be passing this information on to the residents and fellows that were involved in her case because it is a lesson for all of us on what we can do medically but also what we should do when patient's requests don't fit with what we would want but know we should do.
I'm am glad that Cynthia made it home to enjoy her beautiful home, her wonderful family and her loving dogs."
I'll miss my friend tremendously.

On Sunday, a group of us went to the Shamballa Big Cat Preserve not far from her home. I believe she supported it financially, and wanted to go on the tour but never managed to.
Here (http://www.freethought-forum.com/forum/gallery/browseimages.php?c=131) are some photos I took. There was also one of Ensign Steve being pestered by a weird looking bird that we were told was some form of goose. I didn't upload it, but you might pester her for it.

Great pix Ymir! I am in love with the poor leopards, both of them. Beautiful creatures who deserved better.
Sounds like they are a great cause. Big cat rescue is an expensive prospect and vital until laws are changed. I remember reading that in Texas alone there are estimated to be 3,000 tigers kept by the public. It is only an estimate though because unlike my dogs which must be registered, big cats and other exotics do not.

I think that's a Muscovy duck, or a close relative. Ducks interbreed a lot.

Me too. The position Savannah is sitting in and the look on her face reminds me a lot of the way my cat Fiona acted when I first brought her home from the shelter.

OMG! I didn't see this last page. It's Jeebus!
When I was in highschool, my friends and I would go to this park and hang out. There were lots of ducks there, including one ugly monster of a creature. The first time it came around and startled one of my friends, he cried out "Jeebus!" (The friend, not the duck.)
Hence the name. He was a sweet guy though, kinda shy, but eventually he got pretty bold around us. I think that people would usually treat him badly since he was so ugly. I had forgotten all about the matyr Jeebus duck. :goose:
