That song Beyonce sang was just gorgeous! Is French one of her first languages? I am not familiar with the film it was from, tho.
D'oh! Should this be in Art & Literature?

It's here now. ;)
I watched the beginning but now the season finale of Carnivale is on so I had to step away for an hour or so. Chris Rock's opening monologue was pretty good.

These films, man! I haven't heard of half of them, and I haven't seen any of them. Except one, and it was shit. (sorry, vm, I couldn't hold out any longer.)
I'm still enjoying the awards, though. I love incredibly attractive people in outrageously expensive clothing. And isn't that what the Oscars are all about? Natalie looks gorgeous, as usual. And Kirsten's haircut and color look like mine! :)

Beyonce sucks. She can't sing a note, and she looks ridiculous with her idiot arm gestures and appalling jewelry. There I've said it.

Although that dress looked like beachware. With her hair up in that ponytail I think she looks like a Barbie doll.

I like Beyonce, but I think it's totally wrong that they bumped Minnie Driver (who actually sang the nominated song in the film) just 'cause Beyonce is more popular singer.
Ensign Steve
02-28-2005, 03:18 AM
What is with Beyonce singing all the songs? What happened to having them performed by the artist who performed them them in the films? Did Mary Bergman and Marshal Mathers blow that for us? Anyway, I loved the first one, the singing and the outfit. Hated the second. I agree about the jewelery.

I swear I feel like I'm in bizarro world the way Beyonce gets all these amazing gigs. She has a thin, reedy, crappy little voice. Is it just because she's beautiful, or does she have really powerful "people" arranging her career, or what?
Wake up, world! Her talent is an urban legend.

Yeah but she was beyond adorable in Austin Powers.
Here's more about Minnie. I don't know who wrote it, but it's all over the net:
Actress Minnie Driver was reportedly devastated to learn she has been replaced by Beyonce Knowles to perform during the Academy Awards.
The British actress-turned-singer was said by a source to be "inconsolable" after finding out she will no longer be singing Andrew Lloyd Webber's "Learn to Be Lonely," from "The Phantom of the Opera," the World Entertainment News Network reported Monday.
Driver was considered the obvious choice to perform the song, nominated for Best Original Song, since she sang it in the movie. However, show organizers recently announced Knowles would be singing the tune.
The source said: "Minnie just doesn't have the pulling power or the voice of Beyonce. Minnie is devastated and inconsolable. She'd told everyone that this was to be her big break as a singer."

Swank's acceptance speech was one of the worst ever. First the "girl from a trailer park with a dream" bullshit (Eminem should sue), then the litany of saints including her freaking lawyers and blather about voyages and what not. Cliche crap.

Oscar factoid: No 'actor' has ever won an Oscar for playing musician when they lip-synched. Until now. How nonsensical is it to give an Oscar for a actor who is acting the part of a singer ... and not singing?

I don't think the two are quite comparable. Also, it's not as if Jamie Foxx has a grating voice; he can really sing. Plus, with all the crossover that actors (and musicians) are doing nowadays, and seeing how the Oscars do give awards for both movies and their musical scores... it's not as if Jamie couldn't have sung the fucking music and actually earned his Oscar, IMNSHO!

To some degree. There is much more that goes into a movie than just the actors and actresses. There are a lot of "common folk" who bust ass and take great pride in their work who are also recognized at this shin-dig. Don't get me started on actors and their ilk however. We glorify entertainers (this includes athletes) to such an extent that it literally turns my stomach to think about such things.
I try not to be the envious type, but when I see people busting ass in my profession, and on average make less than 5% of the standard fee that Jamie Foxx probably commands for a single movie (I'm assuming ~2 million/flick) ... it sucks.
Oh well ... here I go sounding like the burned out, sick of being an indentured servant, haven't even paid into Social (In)Security yet, graduate student that I am.
