View Full Version : Just plain wrong.

Crumb

So this thread is about aphorisms, proverbs, adadges (etc) that are just plain wrong.

For instance:

"If you put your mind to it, you can accomplish anything."

Or alternatively, it can be about a pair of the buggers that condradict one another.

For instance:

"The early bird gets the worm." & "Good things come to those who wait"

so...shoot

(For some reason I am in a thread starting mood this evening.)

Well, I don't think that "The early bird gets the worm" necessarily contradicts "Good things come to those who wait". The early bird thing refers to getting up early in the morning, not to being impatient.

That said, I like what Heinlein had to say about that adage: "All that shows is that the worm should have stayed in bed."

Yeah, I have heard and repeated "The early worm gets the bird."

I've never heard that one before Ymir's blood, but it seems to contradict "The squeaky wheel gets the grease." I think getting the grease is supposed to be a good thing; getting "hammered down" obviously isn't.

It's Japanese, originally. Essentially if you are different, stand out or 'make waves,' then you will be put back in place. It seems applicable to growing up in America, and even in adulthood in conservative places.

Wow legs, great list. That's the kind of thing I was thinking of, but don't have the memory recall to come up with.

Hi ya Crumb, this was a great idea for a thread - you inspired me.

ha. Well I am glad I could inspire you. Just an idea that has bounced around in my head every once in awhile for a long time. I came up with some a few months ago, but then I forgot them. :( I should write stuff down more often. You are coming up with many more than I ever did though.

CRUMB,

Here is a link to a site that has pages of proverbs. If you click on a PROVERB it will give you the meaning. You can also print them out.. :yup:
