View Full Version : Stockholm - A Socialist Nightmare! (Picture heavy!)

As some of you know I've spend a week with the good woman in Stockholm and it is as awful as you would imagine! Wild bears roam the "streets" :freakout:

Ok, they might not roam the streets but play in their pool, but still! :giggle:
Seriously, though it was great. We had mostly fantastic weather and Stockholm is just beautiful, though not exactly cheap - especially alcohol is ridiculously expensive! :shakebrandy:
Here are some more pictures of (mostly) the old town. I'll upload them to :ff: in the next days:

Are Sweden and Finland "friendly" rivals?
Stockholm looks very lovely, many people who've visited there said it's one of the most beautiful and elegant European cities and one of the cleanest. I would love to visit it one day and other Nordic countries.
If my very limited knowledge of Swedish is correct, Drottningholm Palace translates into Queen's Palace?

Drottningholm means Queen's islet, I think.
Anyway, yes Stockholm is very beautiful and clean. It also has surprisingly few cars. Most people seem to prefer bicycles which might also account for the fact that you see very few overweight people.

Are Sweden and Finland "friendly" rivals?
Yup, largely centered around the highlights of various sporting events and then labelling each other "gay".
Cheering for the other can get you lynched, though.
And yes, a "holm(e)" would be a small island.

Stockholm - A Socialist Nightmare!
:gasp: How dreadful! As we speak, they're scheming in their parks and palaces, plotting the downfall of America while they inflict the horrors of universal health care and gay marriage upon their own citizenry!

Stockholm looks like a lovely city. If I could afford it, I would gladly play tourist and visit.

I love those pretty pavers everywhere. The ones like that in Rome are called San Pietrini and they've stopped making news ones so any replacements are going to be some crappy imitations. :sadcheer:

Beautiful! Almost supernaturally clean and well maintained...even the boats look freshly painted, every single one!

Maybe the low quality of the crapppy imitations might prompt them to make more?

They're too expensive to produce, apparently. I don't know if anything will persuade them to spend more money than they want to spend.

Oh, also, they have vicious flocks of giant birds prowling the streets teaching their chicks how to maim humans:

And you went near enough to snap that pic?!? Or was it a telescopic lens?
Swedish geese are notorious man-eaters, and the main reason for the large populations of Swedes elsewhere.

My grandfather emigrated from Sweden to Connecticut for freedom from the man-eating geese.

So does that mean we need to transplant these man eating geese to areas with large Swede populations? Something needs to be done to keep the Swede population under control after all.

Trying to control one non-native organism by introducing yet another non-native species is pretty much always a recipe for even worse disaster. There is a dangerous probablity that the geese will ignore the gristly Swedes and turn on your more native populations.

That is a risk I am willing to take. Swedes are an international scourge after all. :P

What's the building with the French and British flags flanking the Swedish flag? (3rd image)

I'm guessing it's a hotel, they seem to do that, showing the nationality of some of their guests.

So every night they do a census and then head into the flag storage room?
Miisa
05-31-2009, 07:33 PM
They probably change flags every morning. I worked at a campground one summer and there we were supposed to take the flags down at nightfall and put them up again at dawn. We could pick whatever flags we wanted, as long as one of them was Finnish, and would usually go by the nationality of the guests if we had those flags.
Watser?
05-31-2009, 08:15 PM
OMG we have those geese here too, they fly over the city in the dark honking to mock us :afraid2:
On the other hand we have very few Swedes here.

OMG pretty :wriggle:
When BB2 & I were on Catalina Island, the archway that led from the main street to the homes had lots of flags on it. We guessed they represented the nationalities that lived there.
I forgot what the leftmost one is - something Middle Eastern, Argentina, South Korea, Mexico, and Iceland.

Seriously, though it was great. We had mostly fantastic weather and Stockholm is just beautiful, though not exactly cheap - especially alcohol is ridiculously expensive! :shakebrandy:That's weird. I had read a couple years ago that Stockholm was a fairly affordable place for tourists compared to other European cities. I'm guessing this is largely due to the cost of hotels and things, and not the cost of food and alcohol, tho.
Stockholm is pretty.
http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2456/3580954156_1f6f50b98b_b.jpgMy uncle lives off one of the streets that looks like this. Well, on a side street. He doesn't have a view of the water.
For all I know, you were near his apartment. It's pretty posh, actually...
He's the one with the half-Finnish children.
