I've never been here before, other than to fly through El Paso a coupla times. I had an unused plane ticket to the Midwest that was begging to be used, so I decided to come and visit VM for a few days.
So far I haven't noticed anything unusually different here, other than the fact that the sign by baggage claim in the airport said "Toilets" instead of "Restrooms". Then again, we just went for dinner and then came back to the house and watched movies til sleepytime, so I haven't really been out and about yet.
The ladies I sat next to on the plane just happened to be a couple of real-life pentecostal church-youth-rally-attending missionary types :giggle: I was super polite and refrained from cursing for the entire flight. They were really quite sweet even if a bit gushy.
That's all for now. I want to go see all the touristy things but Tom says there aren't any. I suspected this was the case.
P.S. Jen, I wish you were still here so I could visit you too :(

Hehe! Where is GA from here? I was just thinking about, instead of flying back as planned, renting a car and doing some road-tripping.... :frolic:

From Texas I know it's hella far, but Texas is so big it depends on where you're coming from. JD is only a few hours away from me I know, if you can come that'd be awesome! I'd just need to know when so I can make sure I can, I travel a lot for work, but my schedule is usually week-to-week so I can switch things around if I have to. :giggle:

Yea that drive really sucks, I've done the drive just from New Orleans to Atlanta and I hate that, any more and it's murder. It'll be great if you can come visit, whenever it'll work out. And I still want to head out there, although I've said that for over a year now I know. Just let me know when you're thinking and I'll see if it's good for me!

Yeah, I drove from San Angelo, TX, to Augusta, GA, last December, and it was about 20 hours. Admittedly, Dallas to Atlanta is about five/six hours shorter, but it's still a bit of a trek!
Anywho, enjoy Texas. Enjoy Tom & Ian. We'll see ya when we see ya!

Haha! I had that happen several times with my friend in Las Vegas. I would get there and call him and say, "what's up?" And he'd say, "I'm in LA!" hahahaha!

What fun, Lauri! I'm glad you are getting the chance to frolic these days! But it's too bad you won't get to hang with Tomanian much. :sadnana:
If you get a chance, give both of them a hug for me, 'k?
ETA:
Who is this Ian fella?Way cool guy who doesn't post much here but I've had the pleasure of seeing every time I've met with vm while they were in southern California. Someone (I can't remember if it was Ensign Steve or Lauri D) would say "Tomanian will be a little late" or "Tomanian got here just a few minutes ago" when I would do last minute cell phone calls before a meet. I think I actually had to ask what the nickname was for this "Tomanian" person.

My housemate, who posts here as 'squian' (albeit rarely).

Dallas to Atlanta is 800 miles, so figure 10-12 hours. It's a pretty easy drive though; just get on I-20 east and keep going til you get there.

Hi, Lauri, from someone north of where you are right now. Right about the time I post this, my daughter Roxy and her school flag corps will be travelling through the Dallas area on their way home from a competition in San Antonio.

I will be in Texas in about two weeks. I will be in Lubbock though, far away from them other cities I think. This would be my first time east of Idaho and south of Nevada.

Lubbock? You'll be a long way from anything except cows and oil wells and flat land as far as you can imagine. I never heard of anyone going to Lubbock voluntarily, so what's up that would cause you to go there?

So I have heard, warrenly. There is one thing there, though. Texas Tech University, where my girlfriend is going to law school. I will be visiting her there. This is after she comes out here and stays with me for a week. It should be fun regardless of the setting.

Lubbock is not far from San Angelo, which was my stomping grounds from May to November of last year. Absolutely nothing to look at 'cept big fields and big skies! :)

I did! :yup: Right after I got it we went out for lunch (dim sum, yum yum!) and then to... :drumming:
THE DALLAS ZOO!!! :cheetah: :elephant: :flamingo: :kangaroo: :monkey: :llama: :rhinoceros: :squirrel:
Saw all of the above. It was fun!
I am definitely warming up to the drive-home idea, in which case I will definitely come through Austin.
After careful consideration I think it makes more sense for me to do the GA run in April, as I will be coming back here for the Infidels gathering, then hopping over to Miami for a week. After my duties are done in Miami I can wander over to GA and wherever else.

That's very cool, I've been forgetting about the Infidels gathering, I'd love to get out there.........I have a friend in Dallas I've been meaning to visit too so that'd put them right together. I have a busy April but it'd be great for it to get even more packed!
Yeehaw!
I've never been to Texas (N'Awlins the closest). I'm coming to Texas in ... oh wait, no plans. :(

Whyfor the "grrr"?
I just had sushi in Dallas, of all places. Scary, no? But it was GOOD! There was even a fake spider on the nose of a bluefin tuna, to totally freak me out. It wasn't the sake, I swear - I think Tom will back me up on this one.

I assume the 'grr' was directed toward warrenly's cow reference.
When I was in the Army the drills used to reply to every Texan, "Only two things come out of Texas, boy, steers and queers. Which one are you?"
I never did understand that.
Oh, it was totally the sake.

If you two would stay out of the bait box, you wouldn't run into these problems.

OK. I think I have a plan worked out for my travels. As always, subject to change without notice.
1) Rent car, visit the good Rev in Austin, hotel overnight, return to Dallas.
2) Fly from Dallas to Las Vegas.
3) Either rent car from Vegas to home, or catch a Southwest flight.
As it turns out the cost of a one-way car rental is absurd, and there's also the thing of having to stop by myself overnight (more $ for hotel) in New Mexico. I would have liked to stop and visit in Arizona but all things considered I think my current plan makes the most sense.

If I'd stayed in the military, I'd be at Cannon AFB, in Clovis, NM, which is about 100 miles or so from Lubbock. But no, I decided to come back home and endure winters with 100"+ of snow!
I've only been to Texas for Basic Training, in San Antonio like the good Ensign. I've got to go back at least once though, since the wife and I have made it a goal to get to every MLB part at least once.

Got the JFK tour by a local when driving to California. It was interesting seeing where the window was and driving in the same path that his vehicle took on that fateful day. First taste of Texas hospitality. That was also when I learned that Alaska was Texas's refrigerator! Still trying to figure out why they'd ship the meat up there to freeze?

We went to Dealy plaza yesterday. Had a great lunch at a Mexican restaurant around the corner, then went into the "Sixth Floor Museum" in the old book depository. They have lots of pictures, videos, models, etc. and they even have the very corner where Oswald "allegedly" fired from preserved (not the same cardboard boxes, etc. but set up to look like it and surrounded by glass walls). It was really interesting and pretty sad to listen to an old sounding radio broadcast of the assassination while looking out those windows.
