View Full Version : Where I disappeared to

So I know I sort of just reappeared after being MIA for a while. Most everyone who knows me knows I got out of the Marines in May, and I just sort of went away. I moved up to the Atlanta area with some family into a nice huge house. I knew they had internet access, but their computer had so many spyware/adware/viruses that I couldn't come close to removing them all, and it was dialup. Getting online (when I could) was hellacious, so I was on rarely, I still have a ton of people who probably think I was sent to Iraq. The whole time I was promised a laptop from work, but they switched things around and we don't need them anymore. D'oh.........

My original plan was to go to UGA this past January, for what I hadn't exactly decided. I started working for my uncle in the meantime at his insurance company. It's actually fairly easy work when things are going well, and when they aren't, well I still make more when I was in the Marines and it's a lot less headaches. Right now I travel a lot during the week, not too far, and usually it's a pretty good time even though I'm by myself. I recently found out the going rate for a TN hooker with one tooth is $10, but negotiable.

There's a lot of money in insurance if you're with a successful company due to commissions, and I had some incredible weeks, and my average weeks were still bad ass most of the time. Because work is going so well I was able to buy a house ahead of schedule, I saw the house in mid-Dec or so, and closed on 31 Jan. It's a 3 bed, 2 bath for now. All on one floor with a basement. I say for now because the basement is a perfect candidate for remodeling, I want to do it over and have it as a huge den/game room, want to put a poker table and such down there, and another bedroom. It's already even hooked up for a bathroom. I'm really looking at this house as an investment, so I'm going to put a lot into it. There's some room, the last owner didn't do a good job of it, so I got the house at a good price, and it even appraised at over $10K what I paid for it. I still need some more furniture, which I'm adding slowly. I don't even have a dinette set yet, but I'm not going to get one until I do over the floors (got a $2500 flooring allowance for that) in the kitchen. I'm going to put in nice hardwood floors in the kitchen/laundry room, maybe in the bathrooms too if it'll look right. I have a huge tub in the master bath, but I want to put a hot tub on my back deck (and then have a gathering as I've said before, heh).

With wrestling, everything is really trending water/drowning. About a year ago I used to post on GH about how my career was going, and for a few reasons it's just sort of there. It happens, everything always goes in cycles in this business so I'll be back up soon, it's just a little depressing.

Well my belly is telling me I haven't eaten breakfast yet (plutonium) and I actually have errands to do around the house (plutonium) so I need to get cracking on that (plutonium) so I can meet some guys online to play poker later on (plutonium).....oh yea, I play a lot of poker too, think I'm pretty good. When I have a few more good weeks at work (plutonium) that I hasn't already been set aside for spending on the house, I'd love to take a stab at some of the big tournaments like on TV.

Hey sweetie, the house sounds sweet. Good luck on the remodeling. I enjoy doing that kinda stuff, though it is a pain. 'Bout that poker thang, I really, really suck at the game.

It's been great hearing from you whenever you pop in! I think we need some pics of that new house in the Gallery, too.

Hey Matt, I don't know you, but when you get the house all finished can I come over and try everything out? Sounds great! :)

I wish you much better luck with real estate investing that I have had.

Congrats, Matt. Welcome back from Iraq, Marine! (just kidding)

 Hi Matt! Welcome back, and congrats on the house! (BTW, I can't remember if I ever gave you specific dates--I'll be in Atlanta June 5-9).

Hi!

I play mostly on Ultimate Bet right now (sn: jaceyn). I like the 1 and 5 $ sit and go tournaments, no limit. I hate limit hold 'em for the most part. I'm on Party Poker as well but I don't like it so much.

And I can attest to the fact that sometimes they can turn into great big bottomless pits into which you shovel truckloads of cash never to be seen again.

Thankfully I don't own a shovel. :P

I have family in real estate, mom even referred the realtor to me. She's giving me her kickback referral $ when she gets it.

Thanks, I'm putting together a bookshelf right now so I can finally get a lot more stuff off the floor. So fun doing all this myself

That's cool that you're coming, where's your conference/seminar thingamajig? You're totally welcome to stay here if you have to pay for a hotel.........they're expensive in the Atlanta area. Maybe I can start planning a Infidel gathering for that Jun 5 (a Sunday) if you'll be flying in early enough.

Y'know, I'm not sure exactly where it is and damn if I can find it on their site. All I can gather is downtown Atlanta, from where they're recommending hotels--there were several mentioning Olympic Park or something. How far is that from you, and is it a pain in the ass to get there from your place?

Location has more to do with whether real estate is a great investment or a money pit than any other factor in my experience. Jacey should do fine as the entire Atlanta area has experienced steady growth, and has a diversified economy.

Downtown Atlanta isn't that far from me, about 30-40 minutes. I like where I'm at because I'm close to I-85 and I don't get caught up in the daily traffic. Atlanta traffic is atrocious.

In any case, I'll tenatively plan to have an infidel gathering at my place that Sunday, last one was fun and went real well. I don't have a pool, but I might have my hot tub in by then!

Groovy, I'll keep that in mind. And you could always come to one of the receptions with the science nerds... :) Usually open bar.

Sweet. I can arrive there whenever; haven't booked any tix yet. I'll have to find out exactly when my first meeting is. I'm also giving a talk there but I don't know what day or time, but it wouldn't be the first day of the conference.

Ma-aaatttt!
/me high-fives Jacey

Nice to have you around again. Things just haven't been the same in your absence.

Roland, you should totally take him up on that offer. I was in Atlanta for the Olympics in '96, and we stayed with a friend of a friend also about 30-40 minutes from downtown. Got screwed up in our directions trying to get back to the car one night. Walked around for an hour plus! But anyway, it's a fun town.

Anyway, glad to hear work, etc., is all going so well.

Again, nice to have you back!

If you haven't booked your tix yet, you should come up on Saturday. That way I could invade Matt's house all weekend and we could hang out without my having to miss any work. ;)

I could probably swing that. I just found out that I'm presenting on the 7th, and the conference is at the Georgia World Congress Center, if that means anything to you. I could come down Saturday and maybe crash with Matt Saturday night, and maybe Sunday depending on the conference schedule (not sure yet when it officially begins--generally there's some kind of meeting/schmoozing the first evening of the conference, which would likely be Sunday eve.) Once the conference starts I'll probably stay at a hotel downtown just so I'm forced to actually attend. :) Of course, my evenings will be free if someone wants to show me the good party spots in Atlanta...
