Why can't I just lay off and ignore some of these people rather than arguing with them?

The reason: Iron fist in a velvet glove. :D

I understand that this is irritating you right now. However, I learn alot from the discussions you get into and appreciate your input.

It's hard, but sometimes you gotta walk away. I look at it this way, if some schmuck manages to get me to repeat the same argument more than twice because he's not listening, then I'm the idiot for letting him waste my time. I've let lots of people waste my time by continually trying to reach them when they werem't even trying. Now, I will make one extra try. If someone doesn't seem to be listening, I'm out. It's painful, but it's a lot better than wasting hours and hours on people who aren't even reading your posts.

I haven't tackled the voting thread (http://www.iidb.org/vbb/showthread.php?t=117654) but I thought you were quite calm and reasonable in the gender equality thread (http://www.iidb.org/vbb/showthread.php?t=117973). Your high degree of frustration wasn't particularly showing through there, imo.

I thought for sure you must have come across the latest Genghis (http://www.iidb.org/vbb/member.php?u=22949) in a thread I hadn't read yet.

Thanks, I felt I was way overboard, but maybe i was just feeling it so read my words as stronger than they appear to others.

Hmm, never even heard of him, time to go read his shit and get frustrated.

I have heard of Genghis....I had never heard of the guy she linked to that she is calling a Genghis.

Frankie is at work. Maybe that's why I am so grumpy all the time. I get lonely and bored.

FYI to those who might not know: Genghis was a poster who got edited a lot for posting pictures of underage girls who were scantily clad and/or in suggestive poses. I just looked at his recent posts and didn't see anything Genghis-like at first, and then I noticed where a couple of posts had been edited to remove offending images. They've left his most recent one up, in which the girl, while half-nude, isn't really showing anything, and certainly looks (to me, anyway) to be of age.

'Cuz you're feisty which is what makes you sexy.
She's* sexy even when she isn't being feisty!

Oh of course not because such an expectation would be completely unreasonable. It's just that Derec is one of those people I simply cannot lay off of...I can't ignore him or just brush him off as a lost cause. I think I have a pathology of some kind.

Yeah ya see, I know we kicked his stupid ass, but he ALWAYS does that...just disengages then pops up again with the same tired shit, and it totally frustrates me.

Perhaps you need a canned response to his tired shit that you can cut and paste at him every time he brings it up again. Then you don't even have to read what he actually writes, and maybe you won't get as frustrated.

My theory with Derec/UMoC is that he seems to have some shred of redeemability about him that just makes him extra-frustrating. He's not stupid or evil. He's just incredibly bitter, and has huge blind spots to certain types of things. By which I mean, of course, women.

I find your persistence admirable. You haven't just written him off. You're genuinely trying to engage him.

Personally, I tend to avoid him sometimes (not always) because he reminds me a lot of a guy I used to know who ended up really going around the bend and actually scaring me. If it weren't for that uncomfortable association, though, I'm sure I'd be getting much more wrapped up in arguing with him, too.

I have a wonderful method of not getting angered by posting at IIDB. I've been a member there since September 11th 2003, and have a total, to date, of zero posts. It's too late, of course, for you to match my posting record, but you could try to keep pace with my post rate from now on. :giggle:

My knee-jerk reaction was that you do it because you like to fight. But the more I think about it I get in heated arguments almost every time I post at IIDB and I don't particularly like to fight. So if you're like me, it's probably that standing up for your principles is more important to you than avoiding conflict.

LOL, oh great! You know me as well as most people do online and your first impression is that I like to fight. I must come off as a total scrapper.

I certainly have no fear of conflict, nor do I go out of my way to avoid it, but I don't usually go out of my way to find it either. Certain people, and certain topics, though, just somehow get my fur up and I feel compelled to jump in with both feet and start stomping.

I guess I wonder if he has to give up/disengage enough times, he will realize maybe his arguments and theories aren't quite so solid as he thinks.

I think so, absolutely.

People almost never change their minds on the spot. The sporting instinct, if nothing else, keeps people arguing their side during a given argument, usually. But I do think things sink in. I'll grant that he's not showing a whole lot of progress, but he does seem maybe slightly less strident lately than he has been in the past--he's at least a little less likely to apply those stereotypes universally. (I don't have examples, but it's a general impression I have.)

I know it's frustrating as hell, but I'll just betcha that you're planting some seeds with him. The arguments are sinking in at least to some extent, and I expect that, by simply exposing him to a variety of experiences and interpretations and such, he'll start integrating that knowledge into his own perspective over time. He probably is stepping away from arguments because he doesn't have a response. He may not be prepared to concede many points right now, but I think he's at least recognizing them.

You don't give up strongly held beliefs like that all at once, or even within a month or a year, but perspectives do adapt over time, and he is a smart guy and I think a relatively intellectually honest one in many areas, so I still have a great deal of hope for him.

Maybe I'm being kind of a Pollyanna, but I know that just in my own experience, I tend to change my mind slowly on issues that aren't purely fact-based. Not necessarily out of pure obstinance (although maybe partly), but because it really does take a while to adapt my perceptions to incorporate new information.

So I don't think your efforts are as futile as they might seem at first glance.

Now, this is North America and I am sick and fucken tired of these goddammed foreigners coming in and speaking their particular fucken dialect whenever they choose to do so.

Now! 'splain to me Lucy' what it is that you are saying with the word "mees"?

Is it the Mexican "mees" as in I took my best shot at you and when you took yours I ducked and you mees hitting the target.
Or is it the American version where you think that a herd of mouses is a "mees" the singular of 'meeses'
Could it be that it is the Canadian version that has the monsieur dude going up to the madamoiselle dude-ess and asking the young "mees" if she would like to danse wit him on de danse floor?

I really find it hard to get the gist of what is being said if the idioms of certain cultures aren't made clear.

Brimshack... What in the fuck did you say. Which fucken "mees" did you mean??????

I would like an answer.
