When I got home from work yesterday, Edgar was in the kitchen and he said, all innocent-like, "I made some hummus, but I think I overdid the garlic. Can you take a taste for me?" So I grabbed a cracker and scooped on a teeny dab of hummus and YOW! Where's the "my mouth is on fire!" smilie? I did the "ow owie ow" dance and threw out the other half of the cracker, then chucked some antacid down 'cause my guts were hurting already.

Turns out he put in 6 heads of garlic where the recipe called for 6 cloves.

We did some calculatin' and went to the store and got enough of the other ingredients to thin it out. Now we have a lifetime supply of hummus... good thing it freezes. And good thing my office-mates like hummus. Bwah-hah-hah.

I love hummus, but I think if I had that experience I might be off it for awhile. 6 HEADS of garlic? Good gawd!

6 heads of garlic!
:roflmao:

Wow, sorry about your pain.... but 6 heads of garlic? How much hummus did he think he was making? :roflmao:

Maybe if he'd used 2 heads, then I might be saying Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmm  Extra garlic hummus

Now that its thinned down, it's just a bit extra-garlicky, not deadly. We're sharing it at work today.

I have been classically conditioned to hate hummus :(

After a heavy night drinking about 16 years ago I find that for at least 10 years afterwards even the tiniest taste of hummus would make me feel ill again.

This is despite the fact that I know damn well intellectually that it was the three bottles of wine and not the home made hummus that made me ill for two days :fuming:

I am pleased to say that I had a little taste of hummus about 6 years ago and the conditioning seems to have weakened :P

I was forced to drink the wine - I was being used by my friend to stop her then boyfriend (who she wanted to finish with) getting too close but he had no idea and just wanted to get rid of the gooseberry (me!) it seemed like a good idea to get blasted at the time

You see, this is an object lesson in why elephant garlic is a bad idea. Imagine if he had used 6 heads of that? You'd be having your stomach pumped right now instead of posting.

I do adore hummus though, and it must be very garlicky, imo. I'm always disappointed when I can taste more cumin than garlic. I love the former, mind you, but the latter really has to predominate in order for me to be fully happy with the hummus experience.

Here's (http://www.freethought-forum.com/forum/showthread.php?p=12306#post12306) my favorite homemade hummus recipe. It's not the classic, but the black beans make a fantastic modification (and turn it purplish, which is pretty damn cool).

Makes perfect sense to me. I always multiply the amount of garlic a recipe calls for by AT LEAST 4. But then A) I like garlic and B) I live in mosquito country.

Olivia did that one time, but she was making honey mustard dressing. It came out SO garlicky! And I was like, "How much garlic did you put in?" and she said, "Threee cloves." And I said, "Are you sure you know what a clove of garlic is?" Turns out Dorian didn't know either. Man, I don't even cook and I know this shit! :P

Hey where's that recipe, Abby? I love hummus. I made it from a boxed mix last week and it just didn't turn me on. I used to have to make it for the deli I worked at and I'm looking forward to making it from scratch again as soon as I get a food processor.
