Gerome should appreciate this one...
While suturing a cut on the hand of a 75 year old rancher, who's hand was caught in the gate while working cattle, the doctor struck up a conversation with the old man.. Eventually the topic got around to Obama.
The old rancher said, 'Well, ya know, Obama is a 'Post Turtle''.
Not being familiar with the term, the doctor asked him what a 'post turtle' was.
The old rancher said, 'When you’re driving down a country road and you come across a fence post with a turtle balanced on top, that's a 'post turtle'.
The old rancher saw the puzzled look on the doctor's face so he continued to explain. 'You know he didn't get up there by himself, he doesn't belong up there, and he doesn't know what to do while he's up there, and you just wonder what kind of dumb ass put him up there to begin with'.

Here's a joke I just read:
A doctor struck up a conversation with an old rancher. Eventually the topic got around to Sarah Palin and her bid for vice president. The old rancher said, "Well, ya know, Palin is a 'Post Turtle'". Not being familiar with the term, the doctor asked him what a 'post turtle' was. The old rancher said, "When you're driving down a country road you come across a fence post with a turtle balanced on top, that's a 'post turtle".
The old rancher saw the puzzled look on the doctor's face so he continued to explain. "You know she didn't get up there by herself, she doesn't belong up there, and she doesn't know what to do while she's up there, and you just wonder what kind of dummy put her up there to begin with".
I guess them wize ol' ranchers are spread right across the whole darn pohlitical spectrum.

I think most of us would call it a turtle. Some, like graduates of University of Maryland, might call it a terrapin. Webster's says that it's a freshwater turtle native to the eastern US. According to that, terrapins are turtles. And, according to Webster's although 'tortoise' tends to be reserved for saltwater turtles, the term is effectively interchangeable with 'turtle'.
We excel at blurring definition lines.

It's a red eared slider I believe.

cuz it gots dem cute widdle red patches on its head.
They are common enough in the pet trade, but are native to the southern US. I have rescued a few big guys that have wandered into my yard over the years, Either they get so big people don't want the expense, or they escape from ponds. I found a female just this last spring, I think she was trying to find a spot to lay her eggs that her "pond" enclosure didn't have. So often owners forget that small detail. So after a rainstorm, she wandered up. I kept her for 48 hours while I looked for an owner in my neighborhood, but had to go ahead and release her in a nearby stream.

Great looking red eared slider. :yup: Somebody let the poor guy down. :(

Not where I'm from. Round these parts, tortoises are often called turtles, but turtles are rarely called tortoises.

I always used 'tortoise' for a mostly land-dwelling reptile, and 'turtle' or 'terrapin' for mostly water-dwelling ones.
I have this idea that the sort of tortoises that were once popular in Britain as pets originated from Turkey and surrounding countries - but this might just be something I made up. :chin:

Bah.
Get your language right before you start exporting it! :madrant:
We have a single word for all kinds of turtles/tortoises/terrapins: schildpad meaning shield-toad.

Tough talk from a guy whose language can't tell a reptile from an amphibian.

It's the same in Swedish, Norwegian, and even crazy-ass unrelated Finnish. Majority of languages win.
