I want to clean my carpets, because it's way overdue. I can't afford to have a professional come in and do it, so what are the best alternatives? I have an area in the spare bedroom that is stained from the leaky bathtub, so I need to deal with that also.
Any advice?

Rent one of those things - RugDoctor? Steam cleaner? - from the grocery store.

Back when I had carpets I rented a RugDoctor from Safeway. It worked fine, was less than $100 and by doing it myself I got to see just how filthy my carpets were.

Hey you like bunnies!
I got some carpets clean tonight, more to do tomorrow. It's not cheap to clean carpets. Carpet shampoo, what a racket that is!

Ya, supermarket steamvac rental is all I can suggest either. I'm not sure it'll have enough umph to remove the stains, though.

I pretreated the stains with stain removers and surprisingly I got most of them out. I think one more pass at the leaky bathtub stains might do the trick.
What a difference to the rugs, I forgot how perty they were. I went too long this time without shampooing them.
