It needs more gap-tooth smiles!

As their next marketing innovation, they need to get a Wal*Mart corrective dentist in every store. They've got the biggest burgeoning market segment in the country already wandering through their outlets.

I don't know where that is, but here, you're not allowed in any public establishment without a shirt or shoes. Also, drinking beer in public like that guy is on the bench would not be tolerated. :nuhuh:

Also, I have to say, I don't notice too much what other people are wearing when I go shopping. I really don't care. I want in, get what I want, and then out. The rest of y'all do whatever it is you do; it makes no difference to me.

A store here that rivals what you might see at Wally World is Price Rite. While I don't give a rat's ass what people are dressed in (so long as they are dressed, tyvm :nooo:), the one thing that does bother me is when I occasionally end up next to someone in the checkout line who apparently has never heard of soap and water. :bo: At that point, what they do affects me and the buck stops there. :nojustno:

One of these times when it happens, I'm not going to hold my tongue. :tongtied:

At our local WM groups of 5-6 guys will follow women around, but act like they aren't ya know? One time they followed me (with my son!) into the female aisle, and I looked and laughed at them, because pretending to inspect the maxi pads didn't really work.

They don't speak English, but my friend speaks Spanish and she says they are blatant about what they are doing when talking amongst themselves, and they assume nobody understands them. She freaks them out by confronting them in Spanish, then they scatter.

Well, now that you've a house, you can get yourself a washer and dryer and pitch that whole scene.
Then you won't even have to dress...then you'll really impress. Well...bub, that is.

Washer and dryer were first things Ivy bought after she closed on the house.

It seems to be unique to this one WalMart. Doesn't happen at the one in the neighboring town, and never happened to me in any other city. And FTR I am usually make-up free, hair clipped, and baggy t-shirted. I certainly don't dress for a trip to WM.

They're migrant workers, in town during various plantings/harvests, so I kinda assumed they're just rubes that don't know any better. But my friend said they do know better, and when she confronts them she pretty much uses something along the lines of "You're mother would be ashamed".

I have never had this happen in other areas I've lived with migrant worker populations. And I know it's not a Mexican cultural thing.

That's who follows women around at our local WalMart though. My gorgeous 18 yo niece can't even go into that store.

I don't know why they do it or why it seems to be here only.

Some of the LM's Spanish speaking employees do stuff like that. Which seriously: Dumb. We are in Colorado. Lots of gringos know Spanish here, and most who don't can probably at least pick out a few keywords and general themes.

But also, sometimes they get pretty cavalier about it, and you can even pick up random English words, or other clues like that stupid lascivious giggling thing that young men in packs are sometimes prone to. So it's sometimes worth just taking a gamble and looking at them like you're offended when you pick up on a cue like that.

I used to work in a Chinese restaurant, and the kitchen guys would do the same thing. After a few well-timed hairy eyeballs and a couple of roughly translated versions of 'Shut up,' they apparently became convinced that I knew Chinese and they stopped doing it when I was there.

http://i2.cdn.turner.com/cnn/2009/CRIME/09/02/georgia.tot.slapped/art.stephens.jpg

A Georgia man allegedly slapped a toddler at a Walmart store because she wouldn't stop crying, authorities said.

Roger Stephens, 61, was arrested Monday and charged with first-degree cruelty to children. An incident report obtained from police in Gwinnett County indicated Stephens did not know the 2-year-old girl he stands accused of hitting.

The confrontation (http://www.cnn.com/2009/CRIME/09/02/georgia.tot.slapped/index.html) happened shortly before noon at the Walmart in Stone Mountain, a suburb of Atlanta.

According to the arresting officer, the child's mother said her daughter was crying as they walked down one of the aisles.

The mother said a stranger later identified as Stephens approached them and said, "If you don't shut the baby up, I will shut her up for you."

A few moments later, while the mother and the crying child were in another aisle, Stephens allegedly grabbed the girl and slapped her across the face.

Police said he hit her four or five times. "See, I told you I would shut her up," the suspect allegedly told the mother.

Well, it's hit CNN now...

Viral Web site mocks Wal-Mart customers

(CNN) -- It's a blog where people post, and make fun of, pictures of out-of-shape, poorly dressed and otherwise awkward people shopping at Wal-Mart.

And, in less than a month, with no marketing to speak of, it's become the toast of the Internet.

"People of Wal-Mart," a gag started by two 20-something brothers and their buddy to share crazy pictures with their friends, has gone viral. Promoted largely on sites like Digg and Funny or Die -- and linked ad nauseam on Facebook and Twitter -- the site picked up enough traffic to crash its servers on Wednesday.

"I'm still baffled -- I really am," said Andrew Kipple, 23, one of the creators of the site, who said his team was frantically working Wednesday to add enough server space to handle the surge in traffic.

Photos on the site, sent in by viewers all over the United States, frequently feature overweight people wearing tight clothes, bizarre hairstyles (with versions of the short-in-front, long-in-back "mullet" leading the pack) and fashion crimes ranging from furry leg warmers to miniskirts that leave absolutely nothing to the imagination.

There's a guy enjoying a can of beer outside a Wal-Mart, a guy dressed as Captain America and another guy with a goat. Yes, a live goat.

Or it could be professionally done and dirty. That'd be somewhat less cool but still kinda cool in that whoever owns it isn't afraid to use it and get a little dust on it boo hoo.

Yeah. I hadn't thought of that.

So...What thing of significance do all those ass antlers signify, you suppose?

The same thing that a back tattoo signifies.

That is, it sort of depends on what the tattoo is of. Some have more personal significance than others, and some really are just about ornament. But you rarely hear people complaining about lasting cosmetic effects when a guy gets a tattoo between his shoulderblades or anything, regardless of what it represents.

And in my experience, I'm more likely to see an old man walking around with his shirt off than I am an old woman. So if I were going to go around caring deeply about people displaying their unattractive bodies, I'd start with men.

godfry n. glad
09-06-2009, 03:55 PM
So....lisapea...

Please explain significance:

http://mywebduck.typepad.com/pentimento/images/180pxassantlers.jpg

Given that fashions tend to persist amongst age cohorts...the group of women who engaged in the above 'ass antler' type of tattoo I would adjudge to be just as likely, if not more likely, to be displayed than any male in the same age cohort with a back tattoo...which, in my experience, is relatively rare. Contrarily, these 'ass antlers', or 'tramp stamps' seem to be widespread...even beyond the Wal*Mart crowd.

The 'attractiveness' escapes me...what does it signify, any way? Why is that particular spot so...popular with the tattoo crowd? Do men get tattoos there, too? If not, why not?

Americans are Weird, Ive never seen any thing to out of the ordinary at the local wall marts....save for the odd drunk native staggering through, but that's not unusual anywhere up here.

I tend to not shop at wall mart much. They're just another chain store up here, and their prices usually are not any better than anywhere else, I usually stick to Canadian tire, Canadian superstore, and sears for day to day shopping.

The 'attractiveness' escapes me...what does it signify, any way? Why is that particular spot so...popular with the tattoo crowd? Do men get tattoos there, too? If not, why not?It doesn't signify much of anything in the example you gave, I'm guessing. It's just decoration, unless she used the triquetra to signify her belief in the Trinity... It's popular because it's a relatively large spot that can be displayed easily, and isn't as painful as some other places to get tattoos. Some men do.

Also, I don't take issues with questions of the sort "How's that going to look at age X?" or "How's s/he gonna feel about that when s/he's middle aged?" whatever. At age 70 is a bit old to be asking about for the former question tho...

I'd say the same thing about a man getting a tattoo I thought was stupid. But I guess in this case it depends on what kind of tattoo Ricci was getting.

...weird and whacky tramp stamps. My favorite:

Hmm, I've been misusing the tramp stamp appellation. I always thought that it referred to getting a tattoo around the belly button. A placement choice that reflects that the woman has no intention of ever being a mother, ie only good for sex to some morons. It's a nasty term either way.

I think the reason why women choose to get the small of their back tattooed is because it has less of a chance getting warped overtime with the natural inflations that occur with pregnancy. No saggage, less chance of stretch marks. It is, IMO, an intelligent place to choose if you want to express yourself.

The 'attractiveness' escapes me...what does it signify, any way? Why is that particular spot so...popular with the tattoo crowd? Do men get tattoos there, too? If not, why not?
In the series Dead Like Me, the characters Mason and Reuben are noting a woman with a tattoo at the small of her back, and one of them remarks that they all mean the same thing: "aim here".

Good luck finding Mao stuff in China. If you do, it's now kitsch.

I was told that there are only two external statues of Mao still standing in all of China, one in Kashi, the other in Chengdu. I also understand that Mao's hometown, once a major internal tourist destination, is now nearly a forgotten backwater, again.

I was in Kashgar in 2004 when the group was informed that this:

http://www.yoyv.com/mini/blog/org/20088/200882582735769.jpg

was the one of the last two external statues of Mao in China.

Perhaps it was meant to mean that it was the last of two "of its kind" left? It is frikkin' huge and during my peregrinations around Beijing, Xi'an, and Turpan, the ONLY representation I saw of Mao in public venues was the single portrait hanging above the entrance of the Forbidden City. There was not even a Mao statue on Tiananmen Square, in front of the location of his tomb.

Given this, I was ready to accept our Chinese guide's assertion that there were only two remaining external statues of Mao in China. I do know that Mao's hometown, and the museum of his home, have fallen in to disrepair and few Chinese visit them any more.

It seems that most of these huge outdoor sculptures of Mao were erected during the 1968 Cultural Revolution...usually in the more 'distant' locales...further from the 'center of the empire' and more likely to drift from the 'true way' of adulation of the wisdom of Mao.

Consequently, I suspect that in a hatred of the upheaval of the Cultural Revolution, most of them were torn down after Mao's death. As to why the one in Kashgar still stands, given that there is an active Uighur resistance movement in the Kashgar region...I suspect that it is because the Uighurs did not suffer the depredations that the Chinese did under Mao, and consequently do not have as much personal antipathy toward Mao.

The Mao statue I pictured, though, seems to me to be a cultural affront to the Uighur people, who are the majority population in Xinjiang, a 'semi-autonomous' region that it is known as targeted by the Party in Beijing as a desired internal migration destination of Han Chinese to non-Han regions. It seems a rather glaring demonstration of insensitivity of the racist colonial overlords.

For those whose life revolves around Walmart, one can now purchase caskets from walmart.com (http://www.reuters.com/article/domesticNews/idUSTRE59S3IV20091029) and have them delivered to your nearest Walmart store for as low as $994.88 plus sales tax, if applicable. A top of the line Walcasket will set you back almost three grand. I guess if you're in the market, you won't be needing that ratty old minivan much longer, or that big screen Visio flat panel TV in the trailerhouse.
