The local* weekly free newspaper printed a letter I wrote. Two weeks ago they ran two articles that were connected in a way I thought deserved comment.

*Meaning it's printed and distributed locally, not owned locally. The City Pages is owned by New York's Village Voice empire.

Is that you, Nathan? Excellent job. The article seemed to imply at that Yecke didn't actually get confirmed as education commissioner. Am I reading it right?

Yep, the state Senate voted not to confirm her, but they took their time doing it so she was acting commissioner for over a year. Creationism wasn't a factor in the decision not to confirm - but her crazy ideas about funding schools were.
She also tried to set the history curriculum back 60 years; she objected to the term "genocide" being used to describe the treatment of American Indians, for example. Fortunately you can't do anything in Minnesota without holding a few public debates so the most eggregious stuff got shot down. I think PZ went to one of the public discussions about the science standards.
