I don't want to start a new thread every time a two-headed or otherwise tragically mutated animal comes along. So, I give you, the freakshow thread.

3 days after the main hatch, workers excavate each turtle nest, and open any remaining eggs to see if it was unfertilized, dead embryo, or what. They found this two headed turtle during one of them.

It was variously identified as a dead dog, a disused film prop and a marketing stunt, but its remains have never been found.

Looks like a hairless sloth to me. Funny how its remains were photographed, but never actually found.

i thought it (the alien looking thingy) looked like ET and as i commented on another site:

i hope that thing didn't watch ET and think he'd be ok approaching children and that maybe one would take him home in his bicycle basket or something...people are meaner since spielberg changed his focus from hope and kindness to killing jews and germans...

(the story i read at that site had children killing it with rocks)

Melanism is merely the dark pigmentation of skin, fur -- or in this case, feathers. The unique trait derives from increased melanin in the body. Genes may play a role, but so might other factors. While melanism is common in many different animal species (e.g., Washington D.C. is famous for its melanistic squirrels), the trait is extremely rare in penguins. All-black penguins are so rare there is practically no research on the subject -- biologists guess that perhaps one in every quarter million of penguins shows evidence of at least partial melanism, whereas the penguin we saw appears to be almost entirely (if not entirely) melanistic.

I would believe the real animal, but seeing the "parents" in the pic makes me think it's at least staged. I am not all that familiar with equine mating practices (no, really! :shiftier:) but I don't imagine they hang out in nuclear groups like that.

Tasmanian devils are on the brink of extinction because a viral cancer is spreading among them.

Some virus-free populations are being set aside to try to keep some around. Currently infection rates in afflicted areas are estimated at about 90%.

Interesting sidenote - the average age of sexual maturity seems to have dropped to 1 year as a result, as individuals that mature earlier have a greater chance of reproducing.
